Drivex School’s Nathan Tye leads the Spanish Formula 4 Winter Championship, also known as E4, after round one at Algarve.

The top 12 from qualifying one were reversed to form the front of race two’s grid on Saturday, putting Luna Fluxa (Campos Racing) on pole ahead of Simon Bulbarella (Drivex) and Daniel Kelleher (Campos). Race one winner Tye started 11th, and Andrej Petrovic (Tecnicar Motorsport) lined up fifth.

An amazing launch lifted Rocco Coronel from eighth to third by the opening corner, and MP Motorsport team-mate Reno Francot took a few corners to rise from 10th to sixth. Petrovic tried taking the lead from Fluxa around the turn five hairpin but was sent off and then attacked through turn 10 as well before the safety car neutralised the action. Pablo Riccobono (Global Racing Service) had been wheeled off the pit straight, and Aleix Pinera (Tecnicar) had stopped further around the lap.

Kelleher sat third after starting slowly but then passing Coronel, and there was crash drama on lap two that put Felipe Reijs (MP) and Beau Lowetter (TC Racing) out.

Racing resumed on lap six, and Petrovic got alongside Fluxa twice before making an overtake stick. He then maintained a gap that did not allow her to fight back, and won by 0.865 seconds. Coronel went down Kelleher’s inside into turn one on lap seven, and Francot then attacked Kelleher hard through lap nine until he found a way past.

Kasper Schormans (MP) and Tye finished sixth and seventh, and Noah Monteiro (Campos) charged from 31st to 10th.

Sunday morning began with qualifying two, and Tye edged Monteiro to pole by 0.041s. Vivek Kanthan (Campos) was 0.183s off in third, and 0.071s split Francot, Petrovic and Nacho Tunon (Tecnicar) in the next places. Ty Fisher (Campos), Coronel, Schormans and Kelleher were also within 0.5s of pole, and one second covered the top 19.

Tye was not pressured at first in race three, as Kanthan resisted Francot’s attacks for third place. Monteiro was filling Tye’s mirrors from lap four onwards, then the safety car appeared on lap eight as Schormans had stopped on track. On the lap 11 restart, Tye left it as late as possible to return to racing speeds but did not spend long at pace as Philippe Armand Karras (G4 Racing), Kelleher and Fisher collided at turn five and Jacob Micallef (Campos) retired after spinning.

Two laps remained when racing resumed, and Tye held off Monteiro for a points lead-extending second win.

Francot had attacked Kanthan again at turn five on lap five but gone off, twice on the lap 15 restart, then on the final lap squeezed down Kanthan’s inside at turn five and forced him deep. That left room on the inside for Coronel to slip past for third, and contact with Francot heading to turn six then dropped Kanthan behind Petrovic and Tunon.

Campos Racing’s Thomas Strauven became Spanish Formula 4 Winter champion in the final race at Navarra, won by Tecnicar Motorsport’s Andrej Petrovic.

Qualifying for the title decider took place on a damp track in the morning, with drivers heading out on wet compound tyres. The driver who mastered the conditions was MP Motorsport’s Ean Eyckmans, who went over a second faster than anyone else.

Petrovic was best of the rest, beating MP’s Rene Lammers to second place by a tiny 0.016 seconds, and Drivex School’s Christopher Feghali was the only other driver within two seconds of pole. Strauven was a massive 4.982s off the pace down in 13th, and only 24 of the 32 drivers were within the maximum qualifying time.

After results revisions and grid penalties, Strauven found himself 10th on the grid, three places ahead of title rival Jan Przyrowski.

The track was dry, but Eyckmans struggled to get off the line and Lammers led into turn one. Petrovic also got past, and Strauven got up to eighth. The title was decided mid-lap as Przyrowski was eliminated in a crash with Campos team-mate Vivek Kanthan. Tecnicar’s Nacho Tunon, Rodin Motorsport’s Kyuho Lee and Sainteloc Racing’s Philippe Armand Karras also retired.

Strauven made further progress before the safety car was summoned, and following the restart he fought Eyckmans for fourth as Rodin’s Nathan Tye established himself in third.

Lammers led the rest of the race, but got a five-second penalty for jumping the start that handed victory to Petrovic. Tye and Strauven were promoted to second and third.

MP’s Yani Stevenheydens finished fifth on the road but got a 15s penalty for track limits abuse and dropped out of the points, with Eyckmans instead completing the top five.

Spanish Formula 4 has announced its cars will start using “advanced sustainable fuel” this season.

French company ETS Racing Fuels will supply it, and its mix will contain “25% advanced sustainable components” this year. Over the course of four seasons it plans to introduce cleaner mixes, until the field is using a ‘100% sustainable’ fuel in 2028.

Quality controls will be introduced to ensure no team gains a performance advantage through the fuel.

There have been many drivers over the last week announced as entering Spanish F4’s 2025 season. MP Motorsport is close to revealing its line-up in full, having named Niklas Schaufler and Hudson Schwartz as signings.

Red Bull junior Schaufler recently turned 15, and made his single-seater debut with MP in Spanish F4’s Winter Championship season opener.

On OK Junior karts the Austrian won the 2023 Italian championship and South Garda Winter Cup, and last year won WSK’s Champions Cup and Super Master Series, was Champions of the Future runner-up and sixth in the CIK-FIA European championship. Schwartz is a third-year single-seater racer who has already come eighth in USF Juniors and USF2000.

Drivex School has signed Kaiden Higgins and Stepan Suslov. Australian junior karting graduate Higgins was seventh in the 2024 Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy, and Suslov comes across from sportscars. He moved from karts to the Iberian Supercars championship last year, driving an Aston Martin Vantage GT4. In the overall standings he was 22nd, and fourth in the classification for Bronze-graded drivers. He began testing in F4 last November.

Monlau Motorsport has three drivers signed: Lorenzo Campos, Alexander Jacoby and Francisco Monarca.

Angolan racer Campos made his F4 debut at the 2024 Motorsport Games, then contested a Spanish F4 round at Jerez. In 2023 he came third in the WSK CC on an X30 Junior kart, and was 16th in the FIA Karting Academy Trophy.

Jacoby was 40th in Spanish F4 and made a Brazilian F4 cameo in 2024, and Monarca steps up from Argentina’s karting scene.

Sainteloc Racing has also put together a three-car line-up, consisting of Christian Garduno and the Karras twins Jean Paul and Philippe Armand. Garduno is a Mexican karter with F4 test experience, and the Karrases are marginally more experienced. They cameoed in F4 Central European Zone last year, and Philippe Armand represented Greece in the Motorsport Games’ F4 event. The pair spent their karting careers in France.

Tecnicar Motorsport’s first signing is Saudi Arabian F4 runner-up and F4 CEZ race-winner Andrej Petrovic, Rodin Motorsport has added South Korea’s Kyuho Lee – winner of the 2024 FIA World Cup for OK-N karts and currently 17th in F4 Middle East – to its line-up and Argentinian junior karting champion Santino Panetta has joined TC Racing.

Many of the drivers entered last weekend’s Spanish F4 WC opener at Jerez. Schaufler and Schwartz are seventh and eighth in the standings, and further back are Petrovic (11th), Jacoby (18th), Lee (22nd), Philippe Armand Karras (23rd), Suslov (27th), Jean Paul Karras (28th), Monarca (29th), Panetta (30th), Garduno (32nd) and Campos (33rd).

PHM Racing’s Andrej Petrovic, Maximilian Popov and Kamal Mrad won Formula 4 Central European Zone’s races at the Red Bull Ring as Jenzer Motorsport’s Oscar Wurz grew his points lead.

Friday featured two 25-minute test sessions and a 27-minute practice session. Popov led the way in testing, setting a 1m31.521s to edge Enea Frey by just 0.004 seconds. Petrovic and Mrad were 0.259s and 0.32s behind in third and fourth, with BVM Racing’s Shimo Zhang completing a top five covered by 0.336s.

Conditions were worse for practice, and a 1m46.004s put Mrad on top by 0.093s over guest driver Ethan Ischer. Petrovic was third again, 0.485s off the pace.

The track was nice and dry again for qualifying on Saturday morning, and Mrad set a 1m31.704s to pip team-mate Davide Larini to race one pole by 0.02s. Ischer was 0.187s behind in third after failing to improve on his last laps, Petrovic was fourth, and the top seven was rounded out by Luca Viisoreanu, Popov and Frey. The 24-car field marked a 10-car increase on the season opener.

Larini took the lead from Mrad on the opening lap of race one, and on lap two there was drama as Ischer pitted and Max Karhan crashed, prompting the safety car to appear. Frey passed Popov for fourth just before that, and Oscar Wurz overtook Viisoreanu for sixth.

Racing resumed on lap five and Kirill Kutskov retired, meaning the safety car immediately returned.

The next restart was on lap eight, and Mrad fell from second to fifth. That did not make life easier for Larini, who traded fastest laps with the chasing Petrovic until he got past at turn three on the last lap. They went side-by-side through the final two corners and Petrovic prevailed by 0.01s.

Popov took third from Frey, Wurz and Viisoreanu demoted Mrad to seventh, and Ischer recovered to eighth after Matus Ryba was penalised two seconds for track limits abuse.

The finishing positions set race two’s grid, but Petrovic immediately threw away his pole advantage by stalling. Larini inherited the lead, then the safety car appeared due to Nathanel Berreby spinning out. After the restart, Popov passed Larini and went on to win by 0.778s. Mrad was gapped in third, and Ischer was fourth.

Race one’s top six were then reversed for race three’s grid, and Viisoreanu made the most of his pole starting spot to lead the first 11 laps of the race. But with four to go he was overtaken by Kamal Mrad, who had started seventh but made it up to third on lap one and had passed Wurz on lap eight of 15.

Wurz also managed to pass Viisoreanu, after making contact, to finish second.

Fourth place made Larini the weekend’s top scorer, and Wurz grew his championship lead during the event by 34 points.

Kutskov had a race-ending incident for the third time in three races, resulting in the safety car being summoned mid-race.

The 2024 Italian Formula 4 grid continues to grow, with two weeks until the season begins at Misano.

There are now 37 drivers confirmed to be appearing on the grid this year, and five teams running more than four cars each.

PHM Racing has grown its line-up to five cars with the additions of Kamal Mrad, Andrej Petrovic, Maximilian Popov and Everett Stack, who will all also be racing for the team in the Euro 4 championship.

Mrad, Popov and Stack represented PHM in F4 United Arab Emirates at the start of this year, coming 28th, 27th and 34th respectively in the standings.

Stack did two thirds of the 2023 United States F4 season and failed to score, and Mrad combined karts with cars last year. He did one Italian F4 round and one Euro 4 round with AKM Motorsport before embarking on an extensive testing programme.

F4 UAE was Popov’s first taste of single-seater racing. In 2021 he won the Italian championship for OK Junior karts, and came third in the Champions of the Future series. He has spent the last two years in the senior OK category, and started off on a high by finishing second in the WSK Champions Cup. Results were harder to come by after that, although he ended 2022 by coming ninth in the WSK Final Cup and he was seventh in the 2023 South Garda Winter Cup.

Petrovic began his single-seater career two months ago in Saudi Arabian F4, and he took four wins en route to becoming championship runner-up.

Jenzer Motorsport now has five Italian F4 entries following the addition of 2023 F4 Central European Zone runner-up Reno Francot and Chinese racer Shimo Zhang who contested the Italian and CEZ F4 finales with the team last year, then got more car racing experience in the F4 South East Asia season opener. Three fifth places are his best results in F4 so far.

Real Racing Team has made Adrei Duna its second signing, with the Romanian switching championships after coming 17th in French F4 last year, while AS Motorsport has confirmed its place on the grid by signing Edu Robinson. He is a graduate of entry-level sportscar series Ginetta Junior, where he came 11th as a rookie in 2023 with one podium.

Saudi Arabian Formula 4 made its first venture into Saudi Arabia this week with a triple-header in Jeddah.

Qualifying ran on Thursday evening, and Andrej Petrovic set a 2m07.434s to take pole by 0.267 seconds over Kirill Kutskov. Oscar Wurz was third fastest, 0.304s behind, and Hamda Al Qubaisi qualified fourth. Four other drivers were within a second of pole.

Race one began at 10pm, and Federico Al Rifai jumped the start from fifth on the grid. He was immediately into second, and Petrovic sweeping to the inside to cover off Kutskov meant Al Rifai led on the outside entering turn one.

Wurz demoted Kutskov to fourth before the corner, and near-contact between the top two at turn two meant Wurz took second place from Petrovic as they accelerated through turn three.

Petrovic took the position back braking for turn four, then almost squeezed Wurz into the wall as they reached the pit straight again. At the end of lap two he dived down the inside of Al Rifai, and Wurz made it three-wide down the straight.

Petrovic led into turn one and swamped Al Rifai at the exit of turn two, with Wurz getting alongside for a bit but soon defending from Kutskov, who on lap five took the outside line for turn one and squeezed Wurz off at turn two. That enabled Al Qubaisi to pass him too.

Wurz reclaimed fourth at turn two on lap nine, and the race ended a lap later. Kutskov won, a five-second penalty dropped Al Rifai to third behind Kutskov, and Saqer Al-Maosherji lost fifth to Al Qubaisi after he got a 5s penalty for a double pass by cutting turn one on lap nine. Suleiman Zanfari did the same, and his penalty dropped him from sixth to eighth.

Points leader Al Rifai, Wurz and Abdulaziz Abuzenadah did not start the reversed-grid race two just before midnight, leaving a grid of 11, and Jabor Al-Thani fell from pole to last on lap one following an awful launch. Saud Al Saud went from third to first straight away ahead of front row starter Laura Villars, and Omar Aldereyaane got into third.

Kutskov went down the inside of Faisal Al-Kabbani for fourth at turn one on lap two, but it led to both going deep and Petrovic jumping ahead having been in seventh. Kutskov then cut turn two and was back ahead of Al-Kabbani and Petrovic, but Al-Kabbani was back in fourth by turn two.

Al-Kabbani was soon third, and began lap three by going to the outside of Al Saud as Aldereyaane went to the inside of him. Aldereyaane claimed the lead, and on the next lap the safety car appeared after Kutskov spun Al Saud at turn two.

On the lap six restart Petrovic lost his front wing driving into Al-Kabbani, and Al-Maosherji lost his too before spinning Zanfari into a wall. Kutskov took third from Petrovic at the end of the lap as the hobbled cars continued. Zanfari got a three-place grid penalty for driving his broken car.

Al-Kabbani took the lead starting lap seven of 13, and Aldereyaane cut turn two to reclaim it. A few corners later Al-Kabbani was back ahead and stayed there until the end. Kutskov resisted Amna Al Qubaisi for third.

Drivers’ third-best qualifying times set the grid for race three a few hours later, with Petrovic and Al-Maosherji on the front row as drivers started on used tyres. Petrovic won by 7.399s to become points leader.

Kutkov passed Wurz for fourth on lap three, but was penalised 5s for cutting turn two, then swept past Hamda Al Qubaisi on lap five. The penalty dropped Kutskov to sixth.

Andrej Petrovic moved into the Saudi Arabian Formula 4 points lead in round two at Kuwait Motor Town.

Suleiman Zanfari was the pacesetter through Friday, topping practice by 0.116 seconds and then qualifying by 0.056s over Kirill Kutkov. Petrovic qualified third, 0.161s off pole, with Oscar Wurz fourth.

The day ended with race one, which along with race four awards full points while races two and three offered half points despite being longer.

Zanfari was unchallenged by Kutskov off the line as the latter stalled and dropped to sixth. Wurz moved into second, but was already 2.5s behind Zanfari by the end of lap one, with Petrovic in third and clear of Saqer Al-Maosherji and Federico Al Rifai.

By the end of the 10-lap race there was a gap of 4.895s between the top two, and a further 6.436s to the queue of cars led by Petrovic. Hamda Al Qubaisi passed Omar Aldereyaane for seventh on lap six and joined the queue on the last lap, but she and Kutskov got track limits penalties so Aldereyaane finished ahead of both.

Laura Villars started on reversed-grid pole for race two on Saturday morning, and despite a good launch had lost the lead to Faisal Al-Kabbani by turn five. Zanfari spun at tun two, while Kutskov and Wurz had a race-ending collision.

The safety car was summoned, and racing did not resume until lap five. Al Rifai passed Villars, with Aldereyaane behind them in fourth until he dropped down the order the next lap.

Al Rifai challenged Al-Kabbani for the lead and successfully took it, while Petrovic relegated Villars to fourth. Al-Maosherji and Zanfari were next to pass Villars on lap eight, with Aldereyaane recovering and pressuring Petrovic on lap 10.

Zanfari briefly got involved in their battle, then on lap 11 Al-Kabbani ran wide and dropped to fourth. His attempt to gain back a place at turn one on the last lap resulted in him hitting Al-Maosherji’s rear-left wheel and launching into the gravel trap.

Al Rifai won by 3.765s over Petrovic, with Aldereyaane third and Al-Maosherji still able to finish fourth.

Villars had reversed-grid pole again for race three, but immediately lost the lead to Al-Kabbani and was down to seventh at turn two when she was spun out by Wurz.

Al-Maosherji took the lead later in the lap before the safety car appeared, then after the restart pulled away to win by 3.148s over Aldereyaane who had passed Al-Kabbani on lap six.

Al-Kabbani dropped 9.5s behind and on the last lap got passed by Al Rifai. But he took back third at the last corner and Al Rifai secured fourth in a photo finish against Petrovic and Kutskov.

Al Qubaisi and Wurz passed Zanfari on lap 10, then a diving move by Wurz on Al Qubaisi two laps later meant he took seventh.

Zanfari had pole for race four, but a slow start meant Petrovic took the lead before turn one and never looked back, taking victory and the points lead. Al Rifai pressured Zanfari late on, and Kutskov was fourth.
