Indy Nxt will have a 24-car grid for this weekend’s season-opening round on the streets of St. Petersburg, as Juncos Hollinger Racing has signed Alexander Koreiba.

The late addition to the field is making a big change in career direction by heading to Indy Nxt, having previously raced prototype sportscars.

Koreiba does have single-seater experience, but only through races in the entry-level Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series back in 2018 and then a United States Formula 4 cameo three years. Since then, he has been busy in LMP3 machinery.

In 2022 he was runner-up in the IMSA Prototype Challenge, he made his IMSA debut in 2023, and two years ago he won Historic Sportscar Racing’s IMSA-affiliated Prototype Challenge in the pro-am class.

“This is a dream come true, and to do it with an organisation of this calibre makes it even more meaningful,” the 28-year-old American said of his Indy Nxt move.

Team co-owner Ricardo Juncos said Koreiba “brings a championship mindset and a relentless work ethic that aligns with our goals as an organisation”.

A few days ago the driver and team got to work with each other on-track in a two-day test that took place on the Miami track that Formula 1 races on. A shortened layout was used, and Koreiba’s team-mate Ricardo Escotto set the pace with his very last lap of the test.

Koreiba was fourth fastest, and Andretti Global’s Lochie Hughes in eighth place commented that the new gearbox being used this season has required him to adjust his driving style. He is the highest placed returnee, having come third in the 2025 standings as a rookie.

Formula E’s annual rookie-only practice session takes place at this weekend’s Miami E-Prix, and a group of junior single-seater stars will be taking part.

The most high-profile of that group is 22-year-old Dennis Hauger, the IndyCar-bound reigning Indy Nxt champion. He will drive for Andretti Global, the team he joined last year and dominated Indy Nxt with.

In 2024, the Norwegian drove for Porsche in FE’s rookie test which took place in Berlin.

Lola Yamaha Abt is calling on the services of Hugh Barter again. He drove for Maserati in FE’s rookie test in 2023, then for the Abt-operated Lola Yamaha team in 2025. Barter was 19th in the 2023 FIA Formula 3 Championship, fifth in Indian Formula 4’s 2024 season then won nine races in the Ultimate Cup Series’ Formula Cup for FRegional cars last year but came fourth in the standings after missing two rounds.

Having joined Barter in Abt’s garage at the 2025 rookie test, Alessandro Giusti joins Jaguar for the 2026 rookie practice session. The Williams junior was 10th in the 2025 FIA F3 Championship as rookie with MP Motorsport, and will stay with the team for a sophomore campaign.

DS Penske is one of the few FE teams with their own driver development programme, and its protege Nikita Bedrin gets another call-up after contesting the 2025 rookie test. He primarily competed in FRegional from 2023 to ’25, but made an F3 cameo and will race in GB3 this year.

Nissan will run two familiar faces in Miami, Gabriele Mini and Abbi Pulling, who joined Nissan thanks to the Japanese manufacturer Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance.

Two years ago, when both were juniors of the Renault-owned Alpine Formula 1 team, they got their first FE mileage with Nissan. Mini did the rookie test, while Pulling drove in the women’s test which was a day of FE’s pre-season testing.

Last June she became Nissan’s rookie test and simulator driver since June 2025 in a multi-year deal, and therefore drove in the rookie and women’s tests. Mini was fastest in the 2025 rookie test, and did the rookie practice session in Jeddah.

Mini is still an Alpine junior and will race for MP in Formula 2 in 2026, having come 13th in the championship as a rookie with Prema last year. Pulling is embarking on a second season in GB3 with Rodin Motorsport, hoping to improve on 10th in the 2025 standings. She was fourth in the FRegional-spec and all-female W Series back in 2022.

FE’s junior single-seater contingent in Miami is completed by Chloe Chambers at Mahindra. She has contested the past two women’s tests, driving for Andretti in 2024 and then Mahindra in 2025, and has spent the last two years as a Campos Racing driver in the all-female and F4-spec F1 Academy series.

Heavy rain on Sunday at the Miami Grand Prix has led to F1 Academy’s second race on the event’s undercard being cancelled.

A shower prior to the start left the circuit wet, with drivers following the safety car for several formation laps. But the rain soon became torrential.

Rodin Motosport duo Emma Felbermayr and Ella Lloyd both slid off the road at low speed, and Hitech GP’s Nicole Havrida soon had a spin as well. Felbermayr had another pirouette on the pit straight before the red flags were displayed, with drivers complaining of poor visibility and aquaplaning.

The cars returned to the pitlane awaiting a new start time, but 10 minutes later officials announced the race would not start.

Campos Racing’s Chloe Chambers had been due to start from pole ahead of team-mate Alisha Palmowski and Prema’s race one winner Doriane Pin. ART Grand Prix’s Maya Weug leaves the weekend atop the standings by a single point ahead of Pin.

During the weekend, it was also announced that Formula 1 has renewed its contract with the Miami GP through to 2041. The 10-year extension means the race has the longest contract of any on F1’s calendar, but its support bill is yet to include any single-seater races higher than the Formula Regional level.

The all-female W Series for FRegional cars supported the inaugural edition of the grand prix in 2022, and F1 Academy raced in Miami last year as well as this weekend.

There are plans for Formula 2 and the FIA Formula 3 Championship to add another urban circuit to their schedules, but that is the future Spanish Grand Prix circuit in Madrid rather than Miami.

Doriane Pin resisted pressure from Alisha Palmowski following a late safety car to win F1 Academy race one in Miami.

Prema’s Pin led home Campos Racing duo Palmowski and Chloe Chambers to take victory by half a second, the trio all making up five positions from where they started.

Rodin Motorsport’s Emma Felbermayr lined up from reversed-grid pole, and she covered off Campos’s Rafaela Ferreira to lead when the lights went out before chaos ensued. 

In the middle of a three-wide battle for fourth, Rodin’s Ella Lloyd misjudged her braking for turn one, narrowly missing ART Grand Prix’s Lia Block in front of her before clattering over Ferreira’s left-rear tyre and into retirement. 

Block was forced wide as a result and tumbled to 12th, while Ferreira avoided car damage but slipped to sixth behind her two team-mates Chambers and Palmowski.

Pin steered through the melee to challenge Felbermayr for the lead, but had to back out when the safety car was deployed to remove Lloyd’s stricken car.

The race resumed on lap three, with Felbermayr remaining ahead initially from Pin and ART’s Aurelia Nobels. Pin dived to the inside later around the lap to grab first place, but Felbermayr wrestled back the advantage into turn one at the start of the next tour.

The pair’s battle created a six-car lead train, and in the middle of it Palmowski swept around the outside of Chambers for fourth.

Felbermayr’s resistance was broken on lap five when she locked up and ran wide at turn one. She dropped to fourth, and then lost further ground in a three-wide battle with Chambers and MP Motorsport’s points leader Maya Weug.

Palmowski wrestled second away from Nobels on lap six, with Pin having edged out a 1.5s lead. The safety car soon returned to track after MP’s Joanne Ciconte and Rodin’s Chloe Chong both retired following a three-car collision that also involved Hitech GP’s Nicole Havrida.

Pin set the fastest lap to edge away once the track returned to green, and she remained in front until the finish despite Palmowski’s late charge.

Nobels lost out to Chambers, Weug, Block and Prema’s Nina Gademan in the closing laps, but she gained one place to sixth at the chequered flag due to Block being penalised five seconds for exceeding track limits.

American racer Ava Dobson will make her F1 Academy debut with Hitech GP as the wildcard entry this weekend in Miami.

The 16-year-old is competing in the UK this year with Arden in GB4, which uses GB3’s previous-generation car detuned to F4 specification. She currently sits 18th in the standings after two rounds, with 10th place her best result.

Dobson made her single-seater debut in 2023, contesting partial programmes in US F4, USF Juniors and USF2000. She continued in USF Juniors in 2024 but her season was cut short by a huge crash at Barber Motorsports Park, and she returned to racing later in the year in GB4.

For 2025, the wildcard driver at each event is being run by Hitech – F1 Academy’s newest team. Last year, Prema fielded an additional car at selected rounds for wildcard entries.

While British Formula 4 will be without Rodin Motorsport’s Ella Lloyd and Chris Dittmann Racing’s Alba Hurup Larsen at Silverstone this weekend due their clashing F1 Academy commitments in Miami, the series has gained another driver for round two.

CDR has signed Polish karting graduate Piotr Orzechowski, who will be making his car racing debut at Silverstone.

Orzechowski came third in last year’s Senior ROK Cup in his homeland, earning a place in the Polish Motor Association’s national squad, and also competed in Italy in the same category. He has spent the winter getting to grips with an F4 car, and took part in pre-season testing with CDR.

“I am really happy to step into the single seaters and to join British F4 with Chris Dittmann Racing as they are a great team with a great history,” said Orzenchowski.

“The car is nice to drive, so I have been getting the laps in during testing and building my confidence ahead of racing at Silverstone. The team has been really helpful and giving me good tips, so I am sure if I keep listening to them, I will be fine.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Piotr to Chris Dittmann Racing,” added CDR’s team principal Chris Dittmann. “From our first test sessions it was clear he brings exceptional talent and determination.

“Our experienced engineers and strategists will work closely with him to refine his skills and extract the maximum performance from the car. We believe Piotr has all the attributes to challenge at the front this season, and we look forward to a campaign of growth and podium success.”

F1 Academy, the all-female Formula 4 championship, will only hold one of its seven rounds in Europe next year.

The 2025 calendar was revealed on Monday, and it consists of three rounds in Asia, three in North America and just one in the continent which last year hosted six out of the seven rounds in the championship’s inaugural season.

Every event next season will run on the Formula 1 support bill, and the season starts with races at Shanghai on March 21-23. Jeddah and Miami retain their places on the schedule, and will be visited on April 18-20 and May 2-4 respectively, then there is a break of a month before the paddock heads to Canada for the first time to race in Montreal on June 13-15.

Zandvoort holds the status as the only circuit to appear in every F1 Academy by hosting round four on August 29-31, then two of F1’s night races cap off the season. However until track schedules are released next year it is unknown whether F1 Academy drivers will also get to race under the lights.

Round five takes place around Singapore’s Marina Bay street circuit on October 3-5, and Las Vegas’s Strip circuit will be where the F1 Academy finale takes place on November 20-22.

Each round will feature two races, and there will be 15 test days across 2025. The venues and dates for those are yet to be announced.

“I want to thank our promoters for their enthusiasm and support, and for joining us on our journey to create opportunities for women to thrive at every level of our sport,” said F1 Academy’s managing director Susie Wolff.

Created as GP2 in 2005, the series initially ran with 10 European rounds alongside races in Bahrain and Turkey (on the Asian side of the city of Istanbul). Bahrain was dropped for 2006, rejoined in ’07, then was dropped again in ’08 as the schedule was shortened.

However a spin-off GP2 Asia series was launched in 2008, with Bahrain, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates hosting races. Qatar was visited in 2009, and GP2 Asia was absorbed into the main series in 2012. Turkey was dropped, with Bahrain, Malaysia and Singapore the non-European hosts. The UAE rejoined in 2013.

Trips to Eurasia came in 2014 onwards, starting with Sochi in Russia. Azerbaijan claimed European status when it first hosted F1 and F2 in 2016 by using the European Grand Prix title for its race on the opposite side of the Caucasus.

All of these were journeys east for teams, and the trend continued in 2021 when Saudi Arabia became a long-term calendar addition. The first ever race in the southern hemisphere got ticked off when F2 (and the FIA Formula 3 Championship) supported the Australian Grand Prix for the first time in 2023.

So why has F2 not headed west, the biggest growth area in F1’s calendar?

“Stefano [Domenicali, F1 CEO] would like us to be everywhere,” said F2 and F3’s CEO Bruno Michel recently, explaining it would be impossible on F2 teams’ budgets to do a 24-round, multi-continental season.

Some saw Australia as impossible, but Michel made it work as series organiser by paying the freight costs for shipping all cars and equipment. It made more than Domenicali interested in F2 attending further flyaways.

“More and more promoters want us to come,” Michel revealed.

“When I increased the number of [rounds] from 12 to 14, I’ve been helping financially the teams for the additional two races. And that’s the kind of thing you have to do to make sure that I’m not destroying the thin balance of this business.”

He added: “I would like to get a race in America, but I have to find the proper agreement with them to race there. Which I have not found yet.”

“I’ve discussed with Miami, I’ve discussed with Austin, but at the moment we haven’t really agreed. But we’re working on that, and then there’ll be some other possibilities because I would like to be on this side of the Atlantic as well. Asia, so far we’re going to the Middle East, and we’re going quite a lot to the Middle East, which is great. Because the tracks are great and it’s very easy to work, and it’s really a part of the world where everybody likes to go.”

GP2’s European rival Formula Renault 3.5 visited Turkey (2006) and Russia (2012-’14), then successor series FV8 3.5 raced in Bahrain, Mexico and on Austin’s United States Grand Prix-hosting Circuit of the Americas in 2017.

Rodin Motorsport’s Abbi Pulling took two poles and converted it into two wins in F1 Academy’s second round of the season in Miami.

Her title rival Doriane Pin was fastest in the first practice session by 0.07 seconds, but Pulling struck back by 0.2s in FP2 then grew that advantage to 0.574s in qualifying. Her second-best laptime also earned her race two pole by 0.408s over ART Grand Prix’s Bianca Bustamante, with Prema’s Pin 0.535s behind in third.

Pulling was unopposed up front in race one, winning by 5.248s. One of her potential rivals exited contention straight away as Bustamante stalled from fourth on the grid. Weug found herself in a three-car battle for fourth by lap three, as Pin and MP Motorsport’s Hamda Al Qubaisi gapped themselves from her in second and third.

Campos Racing’s Chloe Chambers held back in the battle with her team-mate Nerea Marti and Weug, and it worked out as when an opportunity then presented itself to pass both in one move she took it.

Marti eventually got by Weug too, but then an error dropped her back behind her and ART GP’s Aurelia Nobels who was carrying a 10s penalty for colliding with Pema’s Tina Hausmann.

There were several other penalties handed out during and post-race, which resulted in Chambers finishing third (and 12.81s behind the winner) ahead of Marti, Al Qubaisi and a penalised Weug.

Pulling had to get defensive against Bustamante at the start of race two, but was able to keep her at bay and then take a lights-to-flag win by 3.8s. Pin pressured Bustamante for second but never enough to make a pass possible, while Chambers went from eighth to fourth on lap one and then held that position as she lacked the pace of the podium trio.

Weug and Al Qubaisi finished fifth and sixth, with Marti finishing seventh after Rodin’s Jessica Edgar spun away the position.

Only two circuits from F1 Academy’s inaugural season will be raced on by the all-female Formula 4 series again in 2024.

Formula 1 announced the seven-round calendar for its new support series’ second season on Tuesday, and it features races on three different continents after a 2023 schedule that was primarily based in Europe.

Six of this year’s seven rounds are on F1 tracks, but only this weekend’s races at Circuit of the Americas – the first to take place outside of Europe – are actually supporting the world championship. Previous rounds have been on the support bill of the DTM, the NASCAR Euro Series and the World Endurance Championship.

The decision to make it a full-time F1 support series for 2024 was made this March, before an F1 Academy race had even taken place, and F1 announced its own calendar for next year in July.

No pre-season test dates have been announced, but F1 Academy claims that “the race calendar will be supplemented by an extensive official testing calendar that will be announced in due course”.

The 2024 season starts on March 7-9 in Jeddah, joining Formula 2 on the support bill of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Womens’ rights in Saudi Arabia is a topic that is often under international scrutiny, and the country has invested in womens’ sports in recent years.

Round two is at Miami International Autodrome on May 3-5, then the two returning venues Barcelona and Zandvoort are visited on June 21-23 and August 23-25 respectively.

Support races at the Singapore Grand Prix on September 20-22 mean three of the seven rounds take place on temporary circuits, and the last two rounds are at Losail (November 29-December 1) and Yas Marina Circuit (December 6-8). The F1 and F2 seasons also wrap up there.

“I am delighted to announce our seven-round season for 2024. This calendar cements our ambition to become a truly global series, expanding our reach and improving visibility for our mission,” said F1 Academy’s managing director Susie Wolff.

“We want to inspire young girls and women across the globe and show them that there’s a place for them in our sport, and racing alongside F1 will help us achieve this.”

Heading into the 2023 F1 Academy finale, Prema’s Marta Garcia holds a lead of 48 points over ART Grand Prix’s Sauber junior Lena Buhler. MP Motorsport’s Hamda Al Qubaisi is also in title contention with three races to go.

W Series returned for its third season in Miami, but while Jamie Chadwick continues to dominate, new names are starting to emerge as future challengers to the two-time champion

The all-female series had the hopes of getting in font of the eyes of the world by deciding to hold two season-opening races on the Formula 1 support bill at the most high profile grand prix this season at the Miami International Autodrome – or The Hard Rock Stadium as the complex is known for the rest of the year. 

The weekend did not disappoint with some quality racing up and down the grid but the weekend was plagued by late penalty decisions from the stewards, which divided opinion. 

False starts and penalty questions

A false start to the season for Alice Powell leaves her playing catch-up to her long-time W Series rival Chadwick. After stalling, Powell then fell victim to dust off-line as she went wide, sending her Tatuus into the barrier before the end of the first lap.

Lucky for Powell, however, the unusual double header format gave her the chance to come out of round one with some points from race two, which she did, crossing the line in third. She was unable to keep up with the confident pace of Nerea Marti, though she did inherit her second position following the race after the stewards awarded Marti a one-place penalty for moving under braking.

Following a collision with Emma Kimilainen, Powell hit the wall once again and limped home with a broken front wing to secure P3 across the line.

“I know I certainly had some damage,” she said in the press conference afterwards. “I guess the front wing was damaged because I felt like I did have some understeer but I hit the wall as well. A lot of people were surprised with me hitting the wall, it wasn’t on the coverage but I’ve been in the stewards room and seen the onboard and yeah it was a big clout into the wall, so luckily I was able to bring it home.

“I actually thought it was the last lap so I thought ‘oh that’s lucky!’ But when I crossed the line and didn’t see the chequered flag and it was a bit ‘how the hell am I going to finish’, the steering was totally to the right. It was alright turning right but really heavy tuning left.”

The dust on the newly built circuit was also a taking point with the drivers following the first race. Jess Hawkins explained: “It was so, so dusty off-line. There was a couple of times where I missed my braking point into the first corner and ran wide and went into the marbles and it’s so dusty its horrible, really horrible off-line.

“It’s horrible off-line at any circuit we go to but that seems to be a bit more extreme here, but I think that goes with the territory that this is a brand-new street circuit.“

Despite the poor track conditions, Hawkins took her maiden podium position and highest W Series finish to-date in race one. Keeping it clean throughout and staying out of trouble paid dividends for Hawkins when it came to the closing stages of the race.

A collision between then-second placed Kimilainen and Marta Garcia in third – as the former fell back due to a “power cutting” problem on the final lap – gave Hawkins the chance to claim the final podium position just before the chequered flag.

Despite Garcia crossing the line in second, her best W Series result since her Norisring win in 2019, she was penalised by the stewards following the contact with Kimilainen. Their justification was “that car 7 [Kimilainen] was on the outside of car 19 [Garcia] approaching turn 17, with 7 slightly ahead at the turn in point. Car 7 left sufficient room on the inside for car 19 and a collision occurred in the apex area.”

Garcia clearly didn’t agree, posting a statement on Twitter: “I have no words to describe the feeling I got yesterday. I totally think I deserved that P2. For me it was a race incident. Very unhappy with the situation, since I like fair things and I think that the fact that they took second place from me and gave me 10s is an injustice.”

The penalty left Garcia in 11th position in the final classification.

Now she’s an Alpine Academy affiliate, there is plenty of attention on Abbi Pulling, regarded as the next likely after Chadwick to make it out of W Series and progress into F3 and F2.

The 19-year-old had strong pace and managed her tyres well despite the soaring temperatures, finishing fourth in the final classification in race one and sixth in race two, when she set the fastest lap. Her first full time campaign in W Series this year will likely give her even more experience and skills to progress into the higher championships.

Mixed fortunes for the rookies

Getting to grips with a new track while competing against drivers that had been used to W Series machinery for two or three years was hardly going to be easy for the rookies in round one.

While none of the new intake were at the front of the field, there were some drivers that seemed to adapt quicker than others to the cars and track. Chloe Chambers in particular was in a league of her own compared to the other rookies.

When asked about how the rookies on the grid were getting on, W Series CEO Catherine Bond Muir shone the light on Chambers, praising her for her standout performance.

“I’m really impressed by Chloe Chambers, she has been the best of the rookies this weekend,” she said. “What I’ve always said about the rookies is that they will get better and better throughout the season. And I know that is an obvious thing to say but I think our cars – all the drivers say that our cars are very unusual to drive, no one has driven in that position, it’s a very odd position in the Tatuus cars.

“The drivers say it really does take some getting used to so I expect Chloe to get better and better. I don’t know if she’ll get a podium by the end [of this season] but I expect that she will be certainly an interesting one to watch.”

Juju Noda meanwhile had an unfortunate weekend, after a disappointing qualifying where she trailed 5.9s off the pace, she continued to struggle in the two races, both with the overall setup of her car and pure pace compared to any of her competitors.

Meanwhile Emely de Heus kept out of trouble to finish P12 and P10, but it’s Bianca Bustamante who leaves Miami as the highest-scoring rookie, with two points, after Chambers’ received a penalty for crossing the safety car line out of position in race one.

In the first race of the weekend Bustamante crossed the line in P11 after starting P17 but inherited P9 after penalties. In race two, despite a strong start, a small collision meant she ended her race in P14 but the 17-year-old certainly showed this weekend that she has the confidence to fight in the midfield this season.

The champion continues to reign

Unsurprisingly, it is Chadwick who leaves Miami with the most points (and a guitar gifted from Hard Rock), with a 27-point gap to Marti in the standings. Chadwick’s consistency is what shines through most. She wasn’t particularly faster than any other driver in the races – Marti got within a second at some points in race two, and Kimilainen put up a tough fight in race one – but Chadwick was consistently mistake-free lap after lap. This is what gives her the edge.

The Williams development driver had the chance to step up to F3 this year, but opted for a further year in W Series and has set out on her goal of becoming the W Series champion for a third time in the best of ways.

“I was confident heading into [this weekend] but I think anything can happen and it’s so unpredictable racing,” she said. “So you always want to win, you always want to get the best results but it doesn’t always play out that way.

“So yeah, its gone better than expected. It’s not like we’ve been dominant with pace with weekend, there were very fast drivers throughout”

Fastest of all in qualifying was Marti, building on the promise she showed with her own consistent run to fourth in last year’s standings as a rookie. Stalling at the start of the race cost her points, but her quick adaptation to the tricky track hints at her potential.

The second event takes place on home soil for Marti at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a track where all of the drivers have experience and which will likely give us a more accurate representation of the true pace of this year’s drivers.
