R-ace GP’s Enzo Deligny survived tricky weather conditions to take victory in a truncated second Formula Regional Europe race of the weekend at Hockenheim.

Starting from pole, Deligny was never challenged in the limited green flag running, while Trident’s Matteo De Palo took second to close the gap on fourth-placed Freddie Slater at the top of the championship to four points with two races remaining.

The drama started before the lights went green, as the decision was made to delay the start by ten minutes as the cars lined up after their formation lap.

A light drizzle had begun to fall but ultimately only two drivers, Giovanni Maschio and Edouard Borgna opted for wet tyres, although the stewards decided to inactivate push-to-pass.

Deligny made a strong start to lead into the first corner but behind him Sainteloc Racing’s Nikita Bedrin clipped Trident’s Nandhavud Bhirombhakdi, pitching him across the track. Bedrin speared into the Trident of Ruiqi Liu.

With Liu’s car perched on Bedrin’s both were out on the spot and the safety car made its first appearance.

The track was dry when it pulled in at the end of lap five. Deligny maintained his lead from De Palo, while ART Grand Prix’s Evan Giltaire made a move on his team-mate Taito Kato though Turn 2.

As the pair duelled, Slater tried to take advantage but could find no way through. He continued his attack, running side-by-side with Kato through Turn 7 but had to cede the position as Kato forcefully defended the inside line into Turn 8.

Van Amersfoort Racing’s Hiyu Yamakoshi was a spinner on the exit of Turn 1 as he lost control on the kerbs. Fortunately, the rest of the field avoided his sideways car and he managed to rejoin.

Slater finally found a way through into fourth just as the safety car was deployed again as G4 Racing’s Saqer Al Maosherji spun into the Turn 1 gravel, his front tyre worn to the canvas.

As the field formed up behind the safety car, the rain began to fall much more heavily, prompting a number of cars into the pits for wet tyres, led by Prema’s wildcard entry, Mercedes-AMG F1 junior Yuanpu Cui.

The strategy always looked risky as with just over five minutes remaining and the leaders remaining on slicks, a red flag looked highly probable. And so it proved, as the race was brought to an early conclusion on lap 12. With a busy programme at the DTM finale, the decision was immediately taken not to resume racing.

Giltaire took a deserved podium – his first since winning at the Misano season opener – after a strong weekend, from Slater with Kato in fifth.

VAR’s Dion Gowda held onto sixth from R-ace GP’s Akshay Bohra while VAR’s Pedro Clerot dropped out of title contention, despite making up four places to finish eighth.

Freddie Slater stormed to a victory in the first Formula Regional Europe race at Hockenheim with a thrilling drive that earned him the points lead outright.

After a heavy shower pre-race, the safety car led the field through the first lap since only the racing line was dry and the entire field was on slick tyres.

Trident’s poleman De Palo shot into an early lead of 1.5 seconds once green flags waved, before R-ace GP’s Akshay Bohra started to pick up speed and close in. De Palo locked up into the Sachskurve as he tried to maintain his advantage.

ART Grand Prix’s Evan Giltaire tried to attack Bohra into the hairpin but ran wide on the exit, allowing Slater to power past as Giltaire struggled for grip on the wet run-off. The track surface remained damp off-line, making overtaking difficult.

Slater then began to close in on Bohra, going past on lap nine with a clean outbraking manoeuvre into the hairpin. Bohra tried to fight back on acceleration out of the turn but had to cede the position.

De Palo had Slater on his tail by the end of the lap, and the Prema driver initially attacked into the Spitzkehre hairpin before dramatically diving for the inside into the tight left-hander at turn eight. Contact was avoided but both cars ran wide off the track, allowing Bohra to sweep into the lead as Slater rejoined ahead of De Palo.

However, Slater was soon onto the tail of Bohra and got a run through the Parabolika. Bohra tried to defend into the hairpin but Slater had sufficient momentum to outbrake Bohra for the second time to take the lead. Once in clean air, he was unstoppable and built a lead of 3.871 seconds.

De Palo did not have the pace to stay with the top two and held off a late charge from Giltaire and R-ace’s Evan Deligny to keep third and drop 10 points behind Slater in the title fight.

Deligny fell behind team-mate Jin Nakamura for one lap during the race before returning to his starting position of fifth, and Nakamura later came under pressure from Van Amersfoort Racing’s Pedro Clerot. The title outsider got a run into the hairpin on lap 16 and once past Nakamura was matching Slater’s laptimes but ran out of time to hunt down Deligny.

Race Performance Motorsport’s debutant James Egozi finished eighth, and the remaining points positions were filled by ART GP’s Japanese pair Taito Kato and Kanato Le.

R-ace GP’s Enzo Deligny continued his scorching pace at Hockenheim to top the times in qualifying for today’s Formula Regional Europe race.

Deligny topped the times in group A, beating the 1m34.933s benchmark set by Trident’s Matteo De Palo in group B by 0.036 seconds. He could have gone faster if not for a mistake on his final lap.

De Palo will start on pole though, as Deligny carries across a four-place grid penalty from the previous round at Barcelona. R-ace’s Akshay Bohra will join De Palo on the front row.

The other title contenders, Prema’s Freddie Slater and Van Amersfoort Racing’s Pedro Clerot, will start from row two.

De Palo was never headed in group B, which was on track first, although Clerot ran him very close as he came within 0.007s of his pace with a late improvement.

After De Palo had broken into the 1m34s earlier on, Clerot had been just 0.031s slower than him.

VAR’s Dion Gowda and Race Performance Motorsport’s debuting James Egozi briefly jumped into the top four but had their laptimes deleted for track limits abuse, which was a recurring problem across the field.

ART Grand Prix’s Evan Giltaire went third fastest, as De Palo set new benchmarks in two sectors and improved his fastest lap to 1m34.933s. Giltaire was another to improve later on but remained third.

Egozi, who had been languishing in last place without a representative laptime, finally managed to keep within the white lines at the end of jump up to fourth place ahead of Gowda.

Bohra set the pace initially in group A with a 1m35.170s, with Deligny over 0.7s slower than him and then knocked down the order by having his fastest lap deleted for trackl limits abuse.

Deligny improved next time by to go fastest, and Slater moved up to third. On his final lap, Deligny went quickest in sector one but ran wide at turn eight and aborted his effort while Slater was unable to improve.

Jin Nakamura completed a strong session for R-ace with fourth in the group ahead of ART Grand Prix’s Taito Kato.

Enzo Deligny claimed pole for the second Formula Regional Europe race of the weekend at Hockenheim with a dominant display in the first qualifying session.

It was his second successive pole and third from the last seven attempts, and he will be joined on the front row by title rival Matteo De Palo who topped the other group in the split qualifying. Points leader Freddie Slater will provisionally start fifth.

R-ace GP driver Deligny went fastest with his first flying lap in group A, and set the first sub-1m35s lap on his fourth tour.

Honda junior Taito Kato, being supported on-site by Honda Racing School principal Takuma Sato, briefly assumed top spot next time around before Deligny moved back ahead with the fastest splits in two sectors en route to a 1m34.399s lap.

Prema’s Slater moved up to third but was unable to improve further after that, and although many others did he held his position to the chequered flag.

On his final lap, Deligny set new benchmarks in all three sectors to put together a 1m33.989s. Kato also found more pace but was 0.524 seconds adrift of Deligny, and Slater was 0.68s off.

R-ace’s Akshay Bohra was fourth fastest, 0.081s behind Slater and 0.009s ahead of Kato’s ART Grand Prix team-mate Kanato Le. Provisionally missing out on a top 10 starting spot since he was sixth fastest in the group was R-ace’s Jin Nakamura, who was 0.004s off Le’s pace.

Trident’s practice pacesetter De Palo and ART GP’s Evan Giltaire had a duel for top spot through group B’s time on track.

De Palo moved to the front with a 1m34.587s on his fifth lap before Giltaire beat him by 0.153s next time around.

After cooling his tyres, De Palo put in two quick laps late on to improve to 1m34.364s, ensuring he remained on top when the chequered flag waved. He was however 0.375s slower than of Deligny.

Giltaire pushed hard on his final lap, improving in every sector. He bettered De Palo in sector two, but his deficit around the rest of the lap meant he ended qualifying 0.033s shy of his pace.

Trident’s Nandhavud Bhirombhakdi was third fastest in the group, 0.377s off De Palo, ahead of Van Amersfoort Racing’s Dion Gowda, Hiyu Yamakoshi and Pedro Clerot. He is set to be the lowest placed on the grid of the current title contenders, as he will start 12th.

For race one, which has its qualifying session take place tomorrow, CL Motorsport’s Enea Frey and Trident’s Ruiqi Liu have been handed two-place grid penalties due to rule infringements in qualifying. Frey was driving excessively slowly, and Liu was deemed to have been unnecessarily on the racing line when not on a flying lap.

Matteo De Palo led Formula Regional European Chamionship rival Freddie Slater to top spot in practice at Hockenheim.

Friday’s two sessions marked the first FREC mileage for James Egozi, who joins Race Performance Motorsport’s line-up this weekend. The 17-year-old American has been busy so far this year racing for Palou Motorsport in Eurocup-3.

He came third in the winter series as a rookie, taking two wins and a pole, while in the main championship he has one victory and sits seventh in the standings.

Last year he drove for Campos Racing, coming ninth in Formula Winter Series’ points table as a part-timer with one win and then sixth in Spanish Formula 4 with three podiums and a pole.

Rejoining the FREC paddock in Germany are Newman Chi and Enea Frey, who are both racing for CL Motorsport. They made their debuts with the team two rounds ago at the Red Bull Ring, both retiring in their first race then finishing 22nd and 27th respectively the next day.

Chi is currently seventh in Italian F4 and was ninth in F4 Middle East at the start of this year, while Frey began 2025 by coming ninth in FWinter Series and sits 19th in Italian F4’s standings with one round to go.

Slater set the pace in the first of FREC’s two 50-minute practice sessions at Hockenheim, a 1m34.697s putting him 0.235 seconds ahead of De Palo.

ART Grand Prix’s Evan Giltaire trailed by 0.382s in third, and Van Amersfoort Racing’s Pedro Clerot was 0.484s behind in fourth. There were 10 other drivers within a second of the pace, and R-ace GP’s title outsiders Akshay Bohra and Enzo Deligny were sixth and 19th fastest. Deligny was 1.574s slower than Slater.

De Palo lowered the benchmark laptime to 1m34.516s during FP2 in the afternoon, while Slater failed to improve and went third fastest. Title rival Clerot was 0.254s behind De Palo in second place, and Trident’s Ruiqi Liu was 0.381s back in fourth.

Giltaire, VAR’s Hiyu Yamakoshi and R-ace’s Jin Nakamura all lapped within 0.5s of De Palo and Deligny improved to 1m35.235s in 10th. However he was 11th overall behind Bohra, who was one of seven drivers whose personal bests came in FP1.

Motopark’s Jose Garfias and Yevan David won Euroformula’s two Sunday races at Hockenheim.

Shawn Rashid lined up on reversed-grid pole for the wet race two, ahead of Fernando Barrichello, Garfias, Ed Pearson and Everett Stack.

Barrichello started slowly and was fifth before turn one, as Michael Shin went from sixth to third. Approaching turn two, Finley Green spun Stack and got a 10-second penalty. That aided Barrichello, but he soon lost positions again as Tymek Kucharczyk went past at turn six.

Rashid went off and lost the lead to Garfias, before being passed by Shin too after turn 10. Garfias ended lap one with a 1.3-second lead, with Rashid third and David in fourth after a great move around the outside of Pearson in the stadium section.

David, who had started 10th, pursued Shin and Rashid and on lap four dived down Rashid’s inside at turn eight. While he got through, it sent Rashid off so he let him back past. Two laps later he took third place through turn four, but Rashid then used the slipstream to be back ahead before the turn six hairpin.

Pearson and Kucharczyk tried getting involved there, and Kucharczyk took fifth exiting the corner.

Going through a deep puddle exiting turn one on the next lap led to Rashid finally conceding third, then at turn six he went too deep and lost two more places.

Garfias had a 4.6s lead, but in the race’s second half Shin and David set fastest laps to close in on him as the track dried.

David went down the inside of Shin at turn six on lap 12 but Shin reclaimed second exiting the corner, then David’s next attempt at turn nine led to him going off and losing ground. Garfias finished the 17-lap race with 1.522s in hand, with David 1.371s behind Shin.

Diego de la Torre came fifth due to others’ mistakes. Rashid overtook Pearson lap nine before a double spin at the final corner dropped him to the back, then Barrichello went around the outside of Pearson at turn six on lap 13 but on the penultimate lap skated off entering the stadium section and lost two places as de la Torre had just overtaken Pearson.

David and Shin passed reversed-grid poleman Stack at the start of race three, although Stack got back past Shin at turn two and Pearson followed him through at turn four. Shin reclaimed third at turn six, then when rain arrived it bunched up the battle for second.

On lap 10, Shin went to the inside of Stack at turn six and Kucharczyk went around the outside of him at turn seven. Pearson, who was passed off-track by Kucharczyk on lap three, got involved on lap 11 but rear-ended Kucharczyk at turn six. His front wing broke, Kucharczyk punctured and both pitted.

That cost them no time, as the safety car appeared due to de la Torre crashing, and they joined Barrichello in passing Stack on the restart lap. Garfias finished third, and a five-second penalty cost Pearson fifth.

Motopark’s Michael Shin dominated Euroformula’s first race at Hockenheim to boost his title ambitions.

Free practice took place on Friday, with a dry morning session and wet afternoon one. Motopark’s Yevan David set a 1m34.136s to lead BVM Racing’s Tymek Kucharczyk by 0.196 seconds in FP1, with Motopark’s Jose Garfias and Shin trailing by 0.242s and 0.364s in third and fourth.

Shawn Rashid (Nielsen Racing) and Paolo Brajnik (NV Racing) were absent, then Shin and Brajnik did not set any laptimes in FP2. David was fastest again in that session, a 1m46.769s putting him 1.511s clear of Garfias.

Kucharczyk went straight to the top in qualifying on Saturday morning, setting a 1m39.007s on a damp track. Five minutes in red flags waved as Garfias went off at turn 13, then after the restart Motopark’s Diego de la Torre made a big improvement to 1m34.2s.

Rashid became the next driver to lap in the 1m34s, before Motopark’s Fernando Barrichello went from ninth to second with a 1m34.344s. His team-mates Everett Stack and Shin broke the 1m35s barrier with five-and-a-half minutes to go, then Shin went fastest with a 1m33.999s.

Stack improved again, to 1m34.141s, but he and Shin were down to fifth and sixth with three minutes left of qualifying as Kucharczyk lowered the pace to 1m32.851s and de la Torre, David and Nielsen’s Ed Pearson all lapped in the 1m33s.

De la Torre reduced Kucharczyk’s advantage to 0.091s two minutes from the end, David set a 1m33.41s in third and Shin set a personal best of 1m33.679s in fourth. Just before the chequered flag, Shin took third with a 1m33.383s.

There was drama before race one began as de la Torre’s car emitted smoke then stopped on track before reaching the grid. Kucharczyk was therefore alone on the front row, while Barrichello stalled on the formation lap so started from the back.

The poleman was behind Shin and David before turn one, but reclaimed second down the inside of the turn six hairpin then ran side-by-side with David until the straight between turns 10 and 11. There they made contact, with Kucharczyk’s rear-right tyre deflating while David’s front wing got damaged. Both pitted for repairs.

Shin was 2.75s clear by the end of lap one, with Pearson inheriting second before going off on lap two and falling behind Stack and Garfias. While Shin built a 20s lead over the course of the 18-lap race, Stack had his mirrors filled.

On lap eight Garfias dived past him at turn six but went deep so Stack drove straight back past. He then had to get defensive on lap 11, which brought Pearson and Barrichello into the fight.

Garfias made his hairpin move again on lap 12, but Stack reclaimed second at turn seven. They were side-by-side through turn eight on lap 13, and Pearson then passed an aggressively defending Garfias on the run to turn 11.

Despite an off, Rashid joined the pack but positions were held through the remaining laps.

For “a very happy” Rafael Camara, the opening Formula Regional Europe round at Hockenheim was “almost the perfect weekend.”

It was quite a week for the Ferrari junior – turning 19, taking a pole, a win and a second place and with it the points lead as the series heads to Spa-Francorchamps, his “favourite track.”

“We’ll take that, good points for the championship, and we keep working hard to keep doing it like that,” he told Formula Scout after race two in Germany.

Camara appeared totally at ease all weekend, despite the expectations to perform in his second year.

While there has never been doubt about his pure speed, he hasn’t always been able to deliver consistently, particularly in races.

“Yeah, the speed is clearly there,” he agreed. “I just need to focus on what I’m doing and then working hard to be consistent.”

“We always had the pace to be fast, we got quite a lot of pole positions and race wins,” but with too many “bad weekends” where things didn’t “go my way.”

His career so far has been spent slightly in the shadow of Prema team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, although while Antonelli had the upper hand in terms of results and championships, the pace differential, particularly in qualifying, was minimal.

Now, for the first time since they began racing karts in Europe, the two are no longer racing in the same category. Camara is only positive about the years spent together, being able to learn from and push each other.

“[Antonelli] was very good for me because when we started, he was already very quick, so I think I managed to improve myself, to be faster.

“He is a very nice guy, so to work with him is always nice. We always had a good relationship but also on the track we always respected each other, fighting every time.

“So, yes, I miss him and hopefully we find [ourselves] together in Formula 1!” he smiled.

Despite Antonelli being catapulted straight to Formula 2 and already being linked to an F1 race seat, Camara takes a long-term view about returning to FREC, reasoning that another year at this level will help him develop the most.

“I think I’m [still] young racing in single-seaters. Probably I started quite late, so I don’t have this much [experience]. Even testing started for me quite late compared to others.

“But in the end, you need to be ready to deliver what every F1 team is looking for from you and maybe just be more mature.”

He acknowledges the pressure of being one of the few returning drivers, but “in the end, it’s how you manage that. I think this year I’m quite relaxed with myself and being with Prema. I’ve always been with the same team, [which] is like a big family,” he said.

“I just need to focus on myself, working well with my engineer, where we have a really good relationship. I’m doing what I love to do, so just to enjoy the year!”

Evan Giltaire held off Rafael Camara to earn his maiden Formula Regional European Championship win at Hockenheim, in a race which ended behind the safety car.

It was the first win for ART Grand Prix since the 2022 season finale, and made up for the disappointment of Giltaire retire with gearbox issues in the previous day’s race.

Van Amersfoort Racing’s Ivan Domingues was set to start on pole, but the fastest laps of Prema’s James Wharton and Giltaire were reinstated after previously being deleted over track limits violations and that put them on the front row with Domingues knocked back to fourth behind Wharton’s team-mate Camara.

Wharton made a poor getaway from pole but he and Giltaire left the faster Camara without a gap to sneak into. Giltaire took the inside and the lead, and Camara then got a run on Wharton into turn two to take second.

Wharton’s race got worse when he came together with VAR’s Pedro Clerot at the hairpin, forcing him into retirement.

Domingues made a good start and ended lap one in third, with R-ace GP’s Enzo Deligny in fourth. Prema’s Ugo Ugochukwu pulled off after an incident with KIC Motorsport’s Alex Sawer, while Race Performance Motorsport’s Edgar Pierre got stuck in the gravel and so the safety car was summoned.

Racing resumed at the end of lap six and Sainteloc Racing’s Theophile Nael put immediate pressure on VAR’s Brando Badoer, pulling off a move into the hairpin. Deligny lost ground with the three ahead and was soon defending from Nael.

Further back, Trident’s Roman Bilinski ran into the back of team-mate Niko Lacorte at turn two although both continued.

The safety car was soon required once more as Iron Dames’ Doriane Pin appeared to clip ART GP’s Lena Buhler at the hairpin, pushing her off track.

Green flags next flew with five-and-a-half minutes left of the race, and Nael challenged Deligny straight away. But before the drivers had a chance to get back into a rhythm, KIC Motorsport’s Costa Toparis and G4 Racing’s Kanato Le collided as they went through the fast right-hander into the Motodrom.

With two cars in the gravel and just over three minutes on the clock, the remaining laps ran behind the safety car and victory was secured for Giltaire.

Brad Benavides, Francesco Simonazzi and Michael Shin were the Euroformula race-winners in round two at Hockenheim.

Benavides set a 1m31.134s to take pole for race one by 0.657 seconds over Motopark team-mate Levente Revesz, with Jakob Bergmeister, Simonazzi, the debuting ex-FIA Formula 3 racer Shin and Paolo Brajnik completing the top six. Fernando Barrichello had his six best laps deleted so ended up 5.661s off the pace in seventh and last.

Shin failed to get going at the start, Brajnik pulled to the side (then got wheeled off the grid) and Benavides lurched off the line so dropped to third behind Revesz and Simonazzi.

BVM Racing driver Simonazzi had a go at Revesz at turn two, but then was attacked by Benavides at turn seven and lap one finished with 1.46s covering the trio. Benavides tried going around the outside of Simonazzi at the turn six hairpin on lap two, then on the inside on lap three and that time he got it done.

A flurry of fastest laps soon brought him onto the rear of Revesz, and on lap nine of 18 he took the inside line at the turn seven right-hander and got into the lead just as Simonazzi had started closing back in on him. Once up front, Benavides quickly established a 1.5s gap and that grew considerably in the last laps as Simonazzi finally attempted to pass Revesz after shadowing him for a long time.

On the penultimate lap they went side-by-side en route to turn six, and at the same corner a lap later he took the outside line and it did not work. But Revesz then had a brief wobble and Simonazzi snuck through. However with 10s of track limits penalties hanging over him, Simonazzi ended up finishing sixth and Benavides won by 6.088s over Revesz. Bergmeister was only a further 0.543s behind, and Shin was fourth despite his own two-second track limits penalty.

Simonazzi’s finishing position put him on reversed-grid pole for race two, which he led lights-to-flag for his fifth Euroformula win. Bergmeister was his closest rival for the first three laps, then Benavides passed him at the hairpin and sat in Simonazzi’s mirrors for the remaining 14 laps.

Bergmeister finished 5.754s behind in third, Revesz was a distant 14.602s back in fourth and Shin beat Barrichello to fifth after both got penalties while battling.

Shin won from reversed-grid pole in race three, which Brajnik missed. Simonazzi tried passing Shin at turn six on laps one, two and five, with his third attempt getting him ahead until he ran wide at the corner exit and dropped back behind. He made further attempts on laps six and nine before Shin edged away.

Revesz got into third at the start, with Benavides passing him at the hairpin before losing out at turn eight. On lap five they swapped places, with Revesz going off at turn eight, then did again on lap 11. Bergmeister demoted Benavides to fifth a lap later and briefly pressured Revesz.
