Finnish youngsters Konsta Lappalainen and Tuomas Haapalainen shared the wins in the opening round of the new Formula Academy Finland championship at Ahvenisto.

The five round calendar, spread over just four months and ran by former GP3 team Koiranen, is based primarily in Finland. The series runs to both Formula 4 and Formula Ford rules, with seven drivers entering in the F4 class for the season opener.

Haapalainen and Lappalainen are both previously winners in F4, and it was the greater experience of former F4 North-European Zone frontrunner Haapalainen that won out in qualifying. Lappalainen could only manage fourth, behind current F4 NEZ rivals Mikhail Belov and Ivan Berets.

A weak start for Haapalainen dropped him to fourth, with Lappalainen going the opposite way as they went into Turn 1. Lappalainen hung on to that lead for the rest of the race, as Haapalainen fought his way back up the order.

The battle for position between SMP Racing team-mates Belov and Berets allowed?Haapalainen to close in and pass both for second, with Belov taking the final spot on the podium by two tenths from Berets.

Lappalainen’s?Kart In Club Driving Academy team-mate Jesse Salmenautio finished fifth, with a sizeable gap over Koiranen-ran privateers Markus Laitala and Michael Neff.

Between the latter two were the top three FFord drivers, with Elias Niskanen taking victory over Miikka Makela and Kosti Joutvuo.

The grid for the second race was the same as the first, with Haapalainen this time retaining his lead at the start. He remained under pressure from Lappalainen, who came within two tenths of victory.

Belov repeated his race one podium in third, just four tenths behind the winner, with Salmenautio a further two tenths behind.

Niskanen and Makela finished 1-2 in the FFord classification for a second time, with Tommi Heino beating Joutvuo to third.

Jimi Hannus?and?Milja Kukkonen will bring the numer of F4 entries up to nine at the second round of the season, which takes place at the auto24ring in Estonia later this month.

Red Bull Junior Richard Verschoor?won the first ever Spanish Formula 4 race at the Navarra circuit.

The Dutch driver led from pole position to chequered flag, finishing up four seconds clear of?Alex Vartanyan?in a field made up almost entirely of drivers that are already competing in the similarly Koiranen-run SMP series.

Racing here for the Drivex team co-owned by Pedro de la Rosa, Vartanyan had slipped from second to sixth with a bad start but the Russian produced a fine fightback, passing the battling?Roope Markkanen?and?Jarno Opmeer?in one move.

SMP F4 leader Opmeer got ahead of Markkanen – one of six drivers entered by Double R Racing – to complete the podium.

Xavier Lloveras – the solitary?Spanish driver present – finished fifth ahead of?Tuomas Tujula and?Nikita Volegov.

Rasmus Markkanen – involved in race-ending contact for Juho Valtanen on lap one – ended up eighth, with Nordic Formula Renault 1.6 driver?Juuso Puhakka and?Tuomas Haapalainen completing the finishers.

Vartanyan later claimed pole position for the third and final race of the weekend in the second qualifying session.

Jarno Opmeer was victorious in the second and last race in the SMP F4 season opener at Sochi.

The Dutch karting graduate was the early leader but spun?when Race 1 winner Richard Verschoor attempted to overtake him, which resulted in the latter’s retirement.

Opmeer dropped behind sophomores Alexey Korneev and Nikita Sitnikov as a result and the action was neutralized soon after, following an incident involving Aleksander Maslennikov.

On lap 8, Opmeer passed Sitnikov and soon got ahead of Korneev as well to secured his career-first win.

The aforementioned Russian duo completed the podium with Alexander Vartanyan repeating his Race 1 result in fourth.

Finn duo Rasmus Markkanen and Tuomas Haapalainen took fifth and sixth respectively, the latter dropping as low as 16th after the start.

Vladimir Tziortzis and Danny Kroes completed the top eight.
