Dennis Hauger’s superb start to his rookie Indy Nxt season looks set to continue at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after topping free practice on its road course layout.

The Andretti Global driver jumped to the top of the times late in the session with a 1m14.2482s lap.

Practice was brought to an end a few minutes early after an incident between Abel Motorsports with Force Indy driver Myles Rowe and HMD Motorsports’ Josh Pierson brought out red flags.

Hauger had sat in first place early on in what was scheduled to be a 50-minute session, ahead of Abel’s Callum Hedge and HMD’s Caio Collet.

In the second half of practice, Andretti team-mate Lochie Hughes jumped to the top of the order and became the first driver to set a sub-1m15s lap. He remained unbeaten until the final five minutes, when Hauger put in his personal best.

Hedge and Andretti’s Salvador de Alba both found improvements to move ahead of Hughes before the session-ending red flags.

Rowe had come into the pits for fresh tyres before a final run and came back on track behind Pierson. When he tried to get alongside him he ended up spinning wide into the grass, where he came to a stop.

There was an earlier red flag period, when HMD’s debutant Juan Manuel Correa stopped on track with a fuel pressure problem. He was able to get going again, but not before the session was stopped in anticipation that his car would need retrieving. Correa made his way back to the pits, where mechanics fixed the problem and sent him back out for further laps.

Caio Collet was HMD’s fastest driver, ending practice in fifth place ahead of Rowe and Pierson.

Completing the top 10 was Evagoras Papasavvas, who had originally been down for just three races in Indy Nxt with HMD this year but made an early debut at Barber Motorsports Park last weekend after it lost Sophia Floersch from its line-up.

A starring performance led to an “unbelievable” second place finish, and he was due to sit on the sidelines for a month before his next outing. However he and HMD decided to earlier this week to race at IMS too, with Correa taking over the #39 car that Bryce Aron drove in the season opener before switching to Chip Ganassi Racing.

Evagoras Papasavvas has called the runner-up finish on his Indy Nxt debut “unbelievable” after making a double step up the single-seater ladder last weekend.

The 17-year-old has spent the last three years in USF2000, IndyCar’s fourth-tier support series which has cars that are more reliant on mechanical grip than downforce, and won three races in that time as well as coming fourth in the standings twice.

He decided to skip USF Pro 2000, the next rung up, for 2025 and instead do three Indy Nxt races. Last week’s round at Barber Motorsports Park was then added to his schedule, denying the opportunity for more test outings before his race debut.

The HMD Motorsports driver was 15th in practice, but qualified third and finished second after holding off Andretti Global’s Lochie Hughes.

“Second place, even if it’s not my debut, is still great. And to do it on my debut is really amazing. It’s unbelievable, really,” Papasavvas said afterwards.

“I never expected anything like this on my debut. Coming from USF2000 is where I primarily race, and then jumping in an Indy Nxt car. I only had one day of testing before this, so it was really amazing to get this done and I just can’t thank the team enough for supporting me, helping me through this. I have no words, it’s just amazing.”

He added: “[They were] the longest laps of my life with Lochie behind me, pressuring me. There came a point those last few laps where I was just holding on. It’s really a big step up into an Indy Nxt car in the first race, especially at a track like this, it’s really crazy. I was trying my best just to stay cool, I made a few mistakes here and there but I was able to make up for it in the next few corners and hold on.”

Papasavvas had targeted a top-five finish after qualifying, and his Barber race has left him targeting similar results in his remaining races at the Gateway oval, Road America and favoured track Mid-Ohio where he first tested the Indy Nxt car.

He credited his adaptation to it on “just being able to trust the car will stick, being able to trust the downforce”, and said after a “strong” test at similar high-speed road course Mid-Ohio “the team wanted me to do this race”.

“I feel pretty comfortable in the car, and I do really love driving this car. I like the higher downforce than what I’m used to. So far I feel pretty confident and I’m loving every second of it,” the American-Cypriot grinned.

Papasavvas’s original plan for 2025 was to contest USFP2000, but “then thinking about it and considering everything when it comes to sponsors, to money and team deals, we found it was better to move up into Indy Nxt” part-time with an eye on a full 2026 campaign.

For now he sits ninth in the points table, and there are three races before his next outing in June.

Two more changes to the grid for this weekend’s Indy Nxt race at Barber Motorsports Park, round two of the season, have been announced.

Bryce Aron will switch from HMD Motorsports to Chip Ganassi Racing, while Evagoras Papasavvas debuts with HMD.

Jonathan Browne vacates the seat Aron takes, and Papasavvas starts his Indy Nxt career early by replacing Sophia Floersch who previously announced her departure from HMD after just one race.

Papasavvas had already signed with HMD to contest three races, and the 17-year-old is making a double step up the single-seater ladder. He has spent three years in USF2000, and in that time claimed three victories and 11 other podiums.

After his outing at Barber, he will race again at the Gateway oval, Road America and Mid-Ohio, taking over the car rookies Nikita Johnson and Max Taylor are also driving this season. Papasavvas is reserve driver when they race.

“After a productive test at Mid-Ohio, I feel ready to take on the challenge,” said Papasavvas. “The car is amazing, and the team has made me feel right at home. I’m grateful to HMD Motorsports for the opportunity, and I’m focused on delivering the best result possible and learning as much as I can this weekend.”

Aron was fourth in Euroformula two years ago, then got a win from two Formula Regional Oceania rounds early in 2024 before moving up to Indy Nxt with Andretti Global. He came ninth in the points, netting two podiums.

He has started 2025 stronger, finishing 13th in St. Petersburg after retiring there in 2024, but that means he sits lower in the standings than where he ended 2024.

Budget problems for Browne, 13th in the 2024 standings and seventh in St. Pete last month, has enabled Aron’s switch.

“A tough update to give. Firstly I’d like to thank everyone at Chip Ganassi Racing. I entered this team only a few months ago and they’re the best organisation that I have had the pleasure of working with. The work and support they have given me so far is incredible,” said Browne.

“Unfortunately due to funding issues I will not be driving for the forseeable. This news came unexpectedly but I’d like to thank my sponsors and everyone who has contributed to my journey so far. As of right I’m working hard to get back in a car as soon as possible.”

Taylor Kiel, a senior management figure at Ganassi, welcomed Aron and noted “we were fortunate to be able to have him test with us at Mid-Ohio last week and get acclimated to the team and our car, so we’re looking forward to building that into a successful Indy Nxt programme”.

Aron said he was “very excited to be joining” and his “time with the group at the IndyCar open test” meant “it is easy to see why they have so much success”.

“I’m looking forward to working with everyone on the team and hitting the ground running at Barber this weekend,” he added.

Evagoras Papasavvas has signed a deal with HMD Motorsports that will put him on the 2025 Indy Nxt grid for three races.

The 17-year-old steps up to IndyCar’s primary feeder series for the rounds at the Gateway oval, Road America and Mid-Ohio, and takes over the car that is also being driven by fellow rookies Nikita Johnson and Max Taylor this season.

Like Taylor he has no experience of USF Pro 2000, the championship below Indy Nxt, and instead is making a double step up from USF2000 where he has spent three seasons driving for Jay Howard Driver Development.

“I am thrilled to join HMD Motorsports for this exciting opportunity,” said Papasavvas. “I’ve been looking forward to my debut in Indy Nxt, and being a part of such a talented team makes it even more special.

“I can’t wait to get on track and contribute to the team’s success, but before then, I will join the team in St. Petersburg to prepare myself better and be on-site if duty calls.”

In USF2000, Papasavvas came 23rd as a part-timer in 2022 then has been fourth in the standings in each of the past two campaigns. He took one win at Mid-Ohio, five other podiums and a pole in 2023, and began 2024 with a run of five podium finishes. After that he finished third in the sole oval race, and later won at Mid-Ohio again and in Toronto.

“We are excited to have Evagoras join our roster for these races,” HMD’s president Mike Maurini said. “His drive, passion, and potential are exactly what we look for in a driver, and we have no doubt he will bring great energy and dedication to the team. He has had success in USF2000, and his 2025 driving duties and reserve driver role will help better his skill set for a potential full-season campaign in 2026.”

Papasavvas had signed to race for TJ Speed in USFP2000 this year, but the team recently announced Jace Denmark as part of its line-up in his place.

Formula Regional Japanese Championship runner-up Sebastian Manson will join TJ Speed in USF Pro 2000 next year.

The Kiwi kicks off 2025 in FRegional Oceania (which he did two rounds of this season as a slicks-and-wings rookie), before going to the USA to step up to USFP2000. In FRJC he never won, but claimed two poles and six podiums.

His single-seater career began in 2022 with seventh in New Zealand Formula Ford and fourth in North Island FFord.

Last year he was fourth in NZ FFord and ninth in South Island FFord, then despite winning half of the races came two points short of the 2024 NZ FFord title. He was South Island FFord champion, and starred in a Formula Open NZ cameo driving an old Toyota Racing Series car.

Manson’s team-mate will be fellow 16-year-old Evagoras Papasavvas, a USF2000 graduate. He twice came fourth in the points, taking 14 podiums but only three wins in three seasons with Jay Howard Driver Development.

Pabst Racing has a mix of experience in its 2025 USFP2000 line-up of Michael Costello, Jacob Douglas and Max Garcia.

Costello joins after two years with JHDD. The 17-year-old member of Fernando Alonso’s A14 Management firm won three races and was fifth in the United States Formula 4 standings in 2023, and won once as he came ninth in USF2000 this year.

However he targets the USFP2000 title: “My prospectus for my first year in USFP2000 is quite promising. I had a strong second half of the USF2000 season scoring podiums and a win. I feel I have the skill and the desire to be up front.”

Garcia won five races and the 2024 USF2000 title with Pabst, having come ninth as a rookie with them in 2023.

“My goals are to run up front and fight for wins [in 2025],” said the 15-year-old. “I get to continue to work with the best team in the USF Pro championships paddock. I always enjoy a challenge and getting to learn the bigger car has been fun.”

In 2022, Douglas was sixth in NZ FFord, raced in the USA’s F4 Western series then came 12th in USF2000 with Exclusive Autosport.

He won the 2023 YACademy Winter Series, and in USF2000 switched mid-season to Pabst. His campaign ended with two wins and a second, lifting him to sixth in the points. For 2024 the Kiwi primarily karted, but did do two GB3 rounds.

“It feels great to be back at Pabst,” said the 19-year-old. “Goal for the 2025 season is to go out there and win races.”

Pabst had tried to get Douglas in its 2024 USFP2000 line-up, but once clear that was not possible sights were set on 2025.

Turn 3 Motorsport has signed Alessandro de Tullio for next season. The 18-year-old joined BN Racing for the final third of the 2024 USFP2000 season and with a best finish of fourth came 20th in the standings. He was fourth in USF Juniors in 2022, winning five races, and mostly karted after.

Evagoras Papasavvas won USF2000’s second race on the streets of Toronto, which started with two laps behind the pace car.

The prospect of rain led race control to run the first two laps under yellow flag conditions, and when green flag action began on lap three there were some drivers going five-wide heading into turn one.

Thomas Schrage was the only driver to get into trouble at that corner, although many either gained or lost several places.

Papasavvas passed pole-sitting Jay Howard Driver Development team-mate Liam McNeilly for the lead, with Pabst Racing’s points leader Max Garcia holding third.

JHDD’s G3 Argyros slowed with an issue and fell to last place, DEForce Racing’s Lucas Fecury lost his front wing and also dropped to the back of the pack.

Papasavvas made the most of clean air and pulled away from McNeilly, and Corry passed Garcia for third on lap four with Exclusive Autosport’s Evan Cooley and DEForce’s Quinn Armstrong behind them in fifth and sixth.

Argyros dropped a lap down on lap nine, and Papasavvas lost time getting past him and that allowed McNeilly to trim his lead from 1.4 to 0.9 seconds.

It had decreased further 0.54s by the end of lap 12, and Papasavvas was fortunate that the pace car then did not appear after McNeilly’s fellow debutant Eddie Beswick crashed at turn eight as the Exclusive Autosport driver was able to park up his car in an easily retrievable spot.

A similar incident for Beswick’s team-mate Evan Cooley a lap later also did not require a pace car intervention, as he hobbled back to the pits but fell down from fifth to 15th.

Armstrong inherited fifth place ahead of Velocity Racing Development’s Max Taylor and Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Development’s Elliot Cox, who had battled against each other a lot early on, and Pabst’s Hudson Schwartz.

JHDD’s Michael Costello had been in that group of cars but went off at turn three on lap 12 and dropped outside of the top 10.

Papasavvas’s lead was reduced to less than half a second on lap 14, and McNeilly was unable to get any closer before the race was neutralised on lap 18 due to Armstrong crashing out at turn 10. The lap before he had lost fifth place to Taylor.

The pace car led the field to the chequered flag, with Papasavvas taking his second win of 2024.

Evagoras Papasavvas and Max Taylor won USF2000’s second and third races at Mid-Ohio.

The second-best laptimes from qualifying set race two’s grid, with Papasavvas on pole ahead of Michael Costello, Quinn Armstrong and Thomas Schrage who had returned to the grid for a cameo with Velocity Racing Development after missing the previous two rounds and contesting the first three of the season with Exclusive Autosport.

Schrage jumped up to third at the start, and held the position until lap six when his engine cover detached itself on one side and started to be blown around slightly. He pitted on lap seven, and Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Development’s Elliot Cox inherited third place.

The top three held their positions thereon, with Papasavvas winning the 20-lap encounter by 1.9659 seconds over Jay Howard Driver Development team-mate Costello.

There was a brief caution period, and after that VRD’s Max Taylor got into fourth by passing DEForce Racing’s Nicolas Giaffone. Before the race was interrupted he had overtaken Exclusive’s Joey Brienza.

Pabst Racing’s Max Garcia finished fifth, ahead of Brienza, Giaffone and Pabst’s Sam Corry. DEForce driver Armstrong finished 12th after penultimate lap contact, while Schrage retired due to his fire extinguisher going off.

By setting the fastest lap though, Schrage did earn pole for race three the next day.

However it was Taylor who went on to stand on the podium’s top step, coming from sixth on the grid for his fourth win of 2024.

Schrage led Papasavvas off the line before a caution period neutralised their battle. Costello had been running alongside Cox when the two made contact, sending Costello spinning out of the race. Cox pitted, then got a drive-through penalty.

The top two were immediately side-by-side with each other when racing resumed, then Taylor made it a three-wide fight. Papasavvas was sent wide and returned to track with a puncture, and Schrage managed to stay ahead.

Taylor continued to push and eventually found a way past before another caution period brought about by an incident leaving JHDD’s Jace Bacon stationary at turn four.

Garcia, then running third, attacked Schrage on the next restart, allowing Taylor to pull away. He had a comfortable gap when a third caution period began, putting Schrage back on his tail. This time he was able to stay with Taylor, but could not find a way past. Taylor set his fastest lap on the final lap to finish 0.4468s ahead.

The third caution period occurred due to Carson Etter, battling towards the back of the pack, being sent into a spin and stalling.

Between the interruptions, Corry managed to climb up to third. After the second caution period, Garcia had kept Schrage under pressure and got alongside him at one point. But the battle allowed Corry and Brienza to close in.

Schrage managed to shake Garcia, who then fell into a three-car battle for third. Corry managed to find a way through before the final caution period, and Garcia held off Brienza, Giaffone and Pabst’s Hudson Schwartz.

USF Pro 2000 and USF2000 tested at Road America on Monday, ahead of racing at the track next month.

The two series got three 45-minute test sessions each, with the higher level USFP2000 cars on track first in the morning.

Jace Denmark topped the opening session, setting a 2m03.5784s to lead a Pabst Racing 1-2-3. He was fastest by just 0.0809 seconds over Christian Brooks, with Simon Sikes 0.1129s behind in third. Jay Howard Driver Development’s Frankie Mossman was best of the rest and 0.2161s behind in fourth, and Turn 3 Motorsport’s Danny Dyzelski was the only other driver within 0.5s of Denmark. The top 10 were covered by 0.9529s.

Indy Nxt racer James Roe Jr stepped down a rung on the single-seater ladder to drive for Turn 3, and was 1.3361s off the pace in 15th place. BN Racing’s Arturo Flores was the slowest in the 18-car field, and missed session two.

Jay Howard Driver Development’s Frankie Mossman lowered the pace to 2m03.0941s in session two, going fastest by 0.337s over Dyszelski. Sikes, Brooks and Denmark (the only non-improver) were next up, and BN Racing’s Nicolas Baptiste was sixth fastest. DEForce Racing’s Mac Clark propped up the timesheet, but was only 1.3779s slower than Mossman and his best laptime would have put him eighth in session one.

Another Indy Nxt driver who appeared in the USFP2000 test was Bryce Aron, who was driving for Velocity Racing Development. He was 15th fastest after session two, and was the only driver who recorded laptimes in session three as heavy rain hit the track in the afternoon.

In USF2000, it was JHDD’s Evagoras Papasavvas who started out on top. He set a 2m10.3356s that put him on top of session one by just 0.0291s over VRD’s Max Taylor. His JHDD team-mate Michael Costello was 0.3026s behind in third, then Pabst trio Hudson Schwartz, Max Garcia and Sam Corry were 0.5355s, 0.5780s and 0.7095s respectively off Papasavvas’s pace as they completed the top six.

The afternoon rain proved even more disruptive for USF2000 then it did for USFP2000, with Exclusive Autosport’s Giovanni Cabrera the sole driver on track in sessions two and three.

USF Pro 2000 and USF2000 teams tested at Mid-Ohio this week, with heavy rain restricting running on the first day.

Both series had three 40-minute sessions each on Wednesday and Thursday.

In USFP2000 the only driver to head out in session one was TJ Speed’s Cooper Becklin, and he immediately returned to the pits both times which meant he did not set a laptime.

The track was completely empty in session two, but in session three 15 drivers completed at least 10 laps each. Velocity Racing Development’s Nico Christodoulou set the pace with a 1m28.3479s, going 0.05579 seconds faster than Turn 3 Motorsport’s Lochie Hughes in second place.

Hughes’ team-mate Danny Dyszelski was a further 0.1605s behind in third, with Jace Denmark (Pabst Racing), Mac Clark (DEForce Racing) and Christian Brooks (Pabst) also within a second of Christodoulou.

Laptimes were immediately faster in the dry on Thursday, and Exclusive Autosport’s Braden Eves topped session four with a 1m20.2032s. Hughes was 0.0323s behind, while Becklin and Clark were more than 0.35s back in third and fourth. There was 0.876s between first and 10th in the 18-car field.

Everyone improved in session five, and a 1m19.3776s from Eves gave him a 0.1526s gap to Christodoulou. Just 0.0964s split Dyszelski in third and Turn 3’s Ethan Ho in sixth, all within 0.4s of Eves. Becklin completed a top 12 covered by 0.9795s.

Eves sank to seventh in session six, as Hughes edged Dyszelski by 0.0644s and Brooks by 0.0934s with a test-topping 1m18.9361s. Clark was 0.1206s behind in fourth, with Sikes and Denmark also ahead of Eves. He trailed Hughes by 0.4624s, and along with BN Racing’s Nicolas Baptiste was a non-improver. Hunter Yeany replaced Christodoulou and was 17th fastest.

There was a similar pattern to USF2000’s track action. Session one featured two drivers, with DC Autosport’s Carson Etter seting a 1m49.3105s to lead Exclusive’s Giovanni Cabrera by 1.6324s. Six drivers left the pits in session two, but only Jay Howard Driver Development’s G3 Argyros and Cabrera set laps. Ayrgros’s best was a 1m53.9088s, 5.9031s quicker than Cabrera.

Evagoras Papasavvas will spend a third year with the Jay Howard Driver Development team as he goes for the USF2000 title.

The 16-year-old American-Cypriot did half of the 2022 season with JHDD and had a best finish of 12th place, but he raised his game for his full campaign last year as he kicked it off with a second place and took five further podiums – including a win at Mid-Ohio – to come fourth in the standings. He also started on pole position twice.

For 2024 there is only one target in mind, as he is set to be the highest-placed driver from last season making a return.

“The ladder works and that has been proven by the winner in USF Pro 2000 advancing to the next level and the same with USF2000. I want to put my name on that list and bring not only myself but JHDD another title,” said Papasavvas.

Team owner Jay Howard said: “Evagoras proved that he has the speed to compete and fight for USF2000 wins, podiums, championship and the USF Pro championships’ advancement scholarship. With track knowledge and a full season of open-wheel racing now under his belt, we expect big things from Evagoras in 2024.”

Papasavvas will be team-mate to Jace Bacon and Michael Costello. Bacon is a single-seater newcomer who was runner-up last year in Radical Cup North America’s Pro 1340 class.

“I’m ready,” Bacon said of the switch to USF2000. “We had a good first test where we were able to learn from one another and that progression continued at NOLA [Motorsports Park]. It will be a learning year for me, but I am up for the challenge and ready to go.”
