Hitech GP’s Jin Nakamura claimed pole for the 2026 New Zealand Grand Prix by topping the final stage of qualifying at Highlands Motorsport Park.

The session was split into three segments, with the top 14 progressing from Q1 to Q2, then the top eight during the second period of track action making it to Q3. That group then fought for pole in the grand prix, the last race of Formula Regional Oceania’s season.

Liam Sceats, returning to the grid after winning the grand prix in 2024, was fastest at first in Q1 ahead of HMD Motorsports with TJ Speed team-mate James Wharton and Nakamura.

Louis Sharp moved to the top six minutes into the 15-minute session, a 1m29.577s putting him ahead of team-mate Ryan Wood by just 0.005 seconds. Zack Scoular made it an MTEC Motorsport 1-2-3, 0.222s behind, and Kiwi Motorsport’s Yevan David was fourth until Nakamura lowered the pace to 1m29.06s.

At that point his Hitech team-mate Kanato Le jumped to second, 0.192s off Nakamura’s pace, HMD’s returnee James Wharton improved to fifth and David was shuffled down to eighth. M2 Competition’s title contenders Ugo Ugochukwu and Freddie Slater were faring very badly, sitting 15th and 16th.

But approaching the halfway mark of the 15-minute session, Slater posted a 1m28.945s to go fastest and Wood set a 1m29.077s to sit third ahead of Le and M2’s Ernesto Rivera. Ugochukwu was now down in 19th, which was last place as Hitech GP’s Kalle Rovanpera was absent due to illness that manifested that followed pre-event testing.

Sharp returned to first place by 0.119s, but Nakamura shaved 0.07s off that benchmark and Le improved to 1m29.135s in fifth. A pace gain of almost 0.7s lifted Ugochukwu from last to first eight-and-a-half minutes in, a 1m28.735s getting him ahead of Nakamura by 0.021s.

With four-and-a-half minutes to go, Scoular and Wood moved into third and fourth with a 0.003s gap between them, and on the next lap there were marginal gains. Ugochukwu lowered the pace by 0.017s, Nakamura improved by 0.001s and Wood found 0.014s in improvements to rise to third.

Nakamura usurped Ugochukwu in the final 30s, edging ahead by 0.013s as Sharp matched Ugochukwu’s pace. Scoular made a gain in fourth, and there were no post-chequered flag improvements. Among the eliminated was Hitech’s Fionn McLaughlin.

Q2 was 10 minutes, and Nakamura was first to the top. He had a huge 1.447s gap to Le five-and-a-half minutes in, then Sceats slashed it to 0.781s, and Sharp also got within a second of him. At this point Slater was seventh and Ugochukwu had only done an outlap.

When Nakamura brought the pace down to 1m28.944s with three minutes to go, Slater became his closest rival 0.111s behind and the top nine all lapped sub-1m30s. Ugochukwu was still without a flying lap.

Slater went fastest with one minute left on the clock, setting a 1m28.486s to lead Wood by 0.276s and Sceats by 0.278s. Everyone improved including Ugochukwu, who was now 13th. He moved up to 10th with his next effort, then was demoted to 11th as Wharton went 10th quickest at the chequered flag. With his own final lap, Ugochukwu leapt up to fifth to secured his Q3 spot.

Le got within 0.153s of Slater after that, and Scoular lapped 0.215s off him to demote Wood to fourth.

Nakamura ended Q2 in seventh, but returned to the fore in the 12-minute Q3. He was on top until Sceats set a 1m29.388s six minutes in, then the next laps were in the 1m28s for most. Nakamura posted a 1m28.339s to lead Slater by 0.279s and Sceats by 0.307s, then Wood got within 0.205s of the provisional poleman.

Ugochukwu reduced that gap to the top down to 0.148s on his next lap, and Le demoted Slater to fifth.

Wood improved again in the final two minutes, but remained 0.1s from pole, and Scoular edged ahead of Le. The only change after that was Sharp beating Sceats to seventh after the chequered flag, and grand prix pole went to Nakamura.

Jin Nakamura was fastest in Formula Regional Oceania free practice at Highlands Motorsport Park, as Liam Sceats returned to the grid.

Sceats was championship runner-up in 2024 and won the New Zealand Grand Prix, and the 20-year-old Kiwi is aiming to repeat the latter feat this weekend as that race wraps up the season.

He has joined HMD Motorsports with TJ Speed’s line-up in a deal that was only struck last weekend, and he knows both teams in the joint entry well. In 2024 he came fifth in USF Pro 2000 with TJ Speed, and last year he stepped up to Indy Nxt with HMD for a part-time campaign and had a best finish of sixth place en route to 18th in the standings.

Sceats got back in the FRegional cockpit during pre-event testing on Thursday, which was split into two sessions. M2 Competition’s Ugo Ugochukwu was quickest with a 1m29.206s lap, and he had gaps of 0.125 seconds and 0.163s to MTEC Motorsport’s Ryan Wood and Louis Sharp in second and third.

HMD with TJ Speed’s James Wharton, returning to the paddock after missing a round, was fourth fastest and Sceats was 1.317s off the pace in 16th after six months out of action.

Practice followed on Friday, and in FP1 it was Hitech GP’s Jin Nakamura who set the pace. His final-lap 1m28.279s effort earned him top spot by just 0.043s over Wharton, with Ugochukwu also within 0.1s of him. Kanato Le (Hitech), Yuanpu Cui (MTEC) and Freddie Slater (M2) all trailed by less than a quarter of a second, Sceats was seventh and a second split the top 17.

FP2 was a slightly slower session, as a 1m28.567s was enough to put Zack Scoular (MTEC) on top and lift him from 17th to seventh overall in the combined classifications of the two sessions. He edged Ugochukwu by 0.095s, Sceats by 0.13s and Nakamura by 0.153s. Scoular was the sole driver in the 19-car field to improve on their FP1 pace.

In FP3, Wood was fastest. He set a 1m28.791s late on, improving on another sub-1m29s laptime that had been deleted, and led Wharton by 0.069s. Sceats was 0.258s back in third, and Sharp was 0.598s off in fourth. Nobody set personal bests, and Scoular was absent.

Ernesto Rivera claimed pole position for the first Formula Regional Oceania race at Teretonga last week in a dramatic qualifying session.

Drivers got used to the short circuit in pre-event testing on Thursday, with the benchmark laptime being a 54.05s from points leader Ugo Ugochukwu. He edged M2 Competition team-mate Slater by 0.097 seconds, and Hitech GP’s Jin Nakamura was 0.159s behind in third. Under half a second covered the top 13.

Free practice followed on Friday, and Nakamura set the pace. FP3 was the quickest, despite two red flag interruptions, and Nakamura’s 53.749s lap put him 0.112s ahead of MTEC Motorsport’s Louis Sharp.

He had a 0.216s gap to MTEC’s Zack Scoular in third, and 0.222s to Slater in fourth. Ugochukwu was fifth, 0.296s behind.

Saturday began with qualifying one, and three red flag stoppages in soaking wet conditions meant almost every driver’s fastest lap came on their second tour of the circuit.

Hitech’s Fionn McLaughlin was an early spinner, at which point Kiwi Motorsport’s Yevan David was atop the times. He was demoted to second by a 1m06.634s from Giles Motorsport’s Jack Taylor, whose team-mate Nolan Allaer set a 1m06.464s a few moments later.

Nakamura quickly bettered the pair with a 1m05.17s, which M2’s Rivera lapped 0.187s shy of. Slater was the only other driver within a second before qualifying was stopped with just under 12 minutes remaining due to Allaer crashing out.

It only took 24s after qualifying restarted for McLaughlin to fly off at high speed. After several spins he reached the gravel and got beached, prompting another stoppage before any outlaps were completed.

The session clock continued during this red flag period due to schedule constraints, and eight minutes were left when qualifying next restarted.

Some drivers were brave enough to go side-by-side in the torrential rain and low visibility conditions, and Nakamura went off through the long turn one on his first flying lap after leaving the pits.

That not only led to the session ending early, but guaranteed he would not be outpaced. However he did not claim race one pole, as his and Allaer’s punishment for triggering red flags were three-place grid penalties.

Rivera therefore claimed pole, 0.656s ahead of Slater. McLaughlin was fourth fastest, but a penalty of his own put him 10th on the grid, meaning World Rally champion Kalle Rovanpera (Hitech) lined up third after being 1.159s off Rivera’s pace in sixth.

Kanato Le (Hitech) and Taylor were promoted from seventh and eighth to fifth and sixth, with Allaer demoted from fifth to seventh and sharing row four with Kiwi’s Cooper Shipman.

MTEC’s Ryan Wood qualified ninth after all penalties were applied, and Ugochukwu was 4.383s off Nakamura’s benchmark down in 12th place.

Title outsider Sharp fared worse, not getting a flying lap in at all due to his pitlane position and qualifying 17th out of 18.

Hitech GP has announced Toyota junior Jin Nakamura as one of its drivers in Formula Regional Oceania for 2026.

The British team will join the Toyota-powered series next year with three cars, and Nakamura will drive one of them before he then steps up to the FIA Formula 3 Championship with the same outfit.

He heads to FRegional Oceania after coming 10th in FRegional’s Middle East and European championships and 19th in the Macau Grand Prix this year.

“I’m excited to announce that I’ll be competing in 2026 New Zealand championship with Hitech,” said the 19-year-old Japanese racer.

“I’m grateful to TGR and everyone supporting me. 2026 is my second season driving outside of Japan, and I believe I can use what I’ve learned this year. I will push myself as much as possible, and do my best together with the team.”

Nakamura made a step down to FRegional as his career moved outside of Japan after he came fourth in the third-tier Super Formula Lights championship with one win in 2024.

Also announced as racing in FRegional Oceania, which switches from championship to trophy status next season, are Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 junior Yuanpu Cui (MTEC Motorsport) and Jack Taylor (Giles Motorsport).

It should be Cui’s first full season in a series using FRegional-based cars. He was a Britsh F4 and Chinese F4 race-winner in 2024, and at the start of 2025 did two FRME rounds, taking a best finish of 15th. He then did two rounds late in FREC’s season, with a best result of 13th.

Between the two he raced in GB3, first in Argenti with Prema’s line-up and then with Hillspeed, and did five of the season’s eight rounds. Cui came 18th in the standings, his campaign peaking at Zandvoort where he finished sixth twice.

“I am focused on just performing to the best of my ability and trying to achieve some good results,” the 17-year-old Chinese said of racing in FRegional Oceania. “Of course I am very excited to be racing in New Zealand with MTEC, it will be very challenging and it is a high level competition.”

Taylor steps up after two years in GB4. He came ninth with one podium in 2024, when GB4 used F4 cars, then was 10th this year with two victories as the paddock switched to using GB3’s old chassis.

“This will be my first time in New Zealand and my closest campaign to home yet so I’m obviously really looking forward to it,” said the 17-year-old Australian. “FRegional Oceania has a strong reputation and it was a much better option for me than doing winter testing in Europe. I’m looking forward to the challenge and to see what I can do and I also have to thank my sponsors for making it possible. It’s going to be an awesome experience racing in NZ and working with Giles Motorsport.”

Prema has announced its line-up for this year’s Macau Grand Prix, which features a two-time winner of the event.

The 2025 edition will be the second to run for Formula Regional cars, and award the FIA FRegional World Cup. It takes place on November 13-16, the same weekend as the Eurocup-3 season finale.

Driving Prema’s three cars in Macau will be Rashid Al Dhaheri, Charles Leong and Freddie Slater.

Al Dhaheri came sixth in FRegional Middle East this year and is currently seventh in the FRegional European Championship, both in Prema-run cars and with Slater as his team-mate. He was FRME runner-up and leads FREC.

In 2024, Al Dhaheri was disqualified from the Macau GP but was third in the supporting Formula 4 race the year before. Slater was ninth in that F4 race, and was classified 13th in last year’s grand prix.

Leong has been busy racing in Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia in recent years, and has contested the Macau GP five times in his career. The local talent’s first two entries into the race were during its Formula 3 era, then he starred when it switched to being a race for F4 cars.

He took pole, won the qualification race and the main race in both 2020 and ’21, then in 2022 qualified third, gained one place in the qualification race and finished on the grand prix podium in third.

R-ace GP ran Ugo Ugochukwu to victory in the inaugural FRegional World Cup, and the French team will be attempting to defend its victory with Enzo Deligny, Matteo De Palo and Jin Nakamura.

Deligny and De Palo are currently fighting Slater for the FREC title, and came fifth and 19th respectively in FRME. Nakamura was 10th in FRME and sits 10th in the FREC standings with one round to go.

At last year’s Macau GP, Deligny finished fourth, Nakamura retired and De Palo was disqualified.

Another winning team on the grid is TOM’S, which will field an all-Japanese line-up of Yuki Sano and Tokiya Suzuki.

Sano is currently second in his home country’s F3-level Super Formula Lights championship, and Suzuki sits second in the FRegional Japanese Championship standings with one round remaining.

Pinnacle Motorsport and Sainteloc Racing will also only be entering two cars each rather than three.

Mari Boya and Theophile Nael, who came third and eighth respectively in the FIA F3 Championship this year, will drive for Pinnacle. Nael was disqualified on his Macau GP debut in 2024, while Boya finished seventh after coming fourth in 2023.

Sainteloc has two Macau debutants: James Egozi and Egozi Tangavelou.

Egozi began 2025 by coming third in the Eurocup-3 winter series, and is currently seventh in the main championship. He could drop out of the top 10 in the standings by missing the final round to race in Macau.

Tangavelou was fourth in Eurocup-3 last year, and claimed a podium in its non-championship event. His 2025 has been split between part-time campaigns in USF Pro 2000 and then Eurocup-3.

Toyota junior driver Jin Nakamura will step up to the FIA Formula 3 Championship next season with a seat at Hitech GP.

The 19-year-old has been racing in the Formula Regional European Championship this year – his first competing in Europe – and currently sits 11th in the standings having recently scored his first podium with R-ace GP at the Red Bull Ring.

Part of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Driver Challenge Program, Nakamura began his career with two seasons in Japanese Formula 4, finishing fourth in 2022 and then second in 2023 behind team-mate Rikuto Kobayashi.

In 2024 he stepped up to Super Formula Lights with Tom’s and finished fourth, and gained sportscar experience in Super GT’s GT300 class where he placed sixth alongside Kazuto Kotaka. His switch to FRegional started with the Middle East championship at the start of this year, where he won a race and came 10th in the points.

“I am very proud to be joining Hitech for the 2026 FIA F3 season,” he said. “It has been a dream to race in this championship.

“I am grateful to the team for their trust, and to Toyota Gazoo Racing, who have supported me throughout my racing journey. I have learned so much competing in Japan and Europe, and I feel well prepared to take on this next challenge. I can’t wait to get started in testing and prepare for a strong debut next year.”

Nakamura is the first Toyota-supported driver to be placed with Hitech since the British team announced a title partnership deal with the Japanese manufacturer earlier this year.

“He has established himself as a very versatile driver, adapting well to different categories of racing, and I’m sure that will continue as he steps up to FIA F3. Jin Nakamura pipped Pedro Clerot to top spot in Formula Regional European Championship pre-season testing at Misano.

There were four sessions lasting four hours each, and in the first on Thursday it was Van Amersfoort Racing’s Clerot who set the pace. A 1m29.683s put him ahead of ART Grand Prix’s Taito Kato by 0.188 seconds, with Prema’s Freddie Slater in third.

Sainteloc Racing’s Nikita Bedrin was the only other driver within half a second, but a second covered the top 13. There were 15 different drivers who occupied first place at different times in the session, and in addition to early rain there was a red flag period.

A notable entrant in the test was Marta Garcia, who believed her single-seater career was over last October when she concluded a points-free season in FREC with Iron Dames and has raced for the team in sportscars this year.

The pace was lowered in session two, with Kato being the first to beat the session one benchmark just over an hour in. R-ace GP’s Enzo Deligny and Nakamura had been on top prior to that.

Trident’s Matteo De Palo beat Kato’s new benchmark a few minutes later, and with two more improvements brought the pace down to 1m29.216s. In the final half-hour Nakamura bettered it by 0.055s, then with little over two minutes left of the day’s action Trident’s Nandhavud Bhirombhakdi set a 1m29.053s that would prove to be his best lap of the test.

He beat Nakamura by 0.108s, with Slater a further 0.008s behind and De Palo 0.127s off the top. ART GP’s Evan Giltaire was fifth, and VAR’s Dion Gowda and Hiyu Yamakoshi were both 0.212s off the pace in sixth and seventh. Clerot was down in 11th, 0.339s slower than Bhirombhakdi, and the top 20 was split by a second.

Race Performance Motorsport’s Enzo Peugeot caused a red flag period when he stopped on track.

The next morning, Bhirombhakdi’s benchmark was beaten at the halfway point of session three. Kato had set a 1m29.049s, and 25s later Yamakoshi crossed the line in 1m28.922s to take over top spot from him. A 1m28.748s followed from Nakamura one-and-a-half minutes after that.

De Palo and Prema’s Jack Beeton got within 0.127s and 0.153s of Nakamura’s test best, Trident’s Ruiqi Liu and R-ace’s Akshay Bohra made it six drivers in the 1m28s, and there was a gap of just 0.464s down to Peugeot in 17th place.

There was lots of red flag stoppages in session four, and first place was disputed between De Palo and Bhirombhakdi in the opening hour. Bedrin then broke their hold, with Peugeot usurping him 53 minutes later and Bedrin waiting an hour to respond. Clerot improved three times in the final hour and his personal best of 1m28.786s put him second overall in the test.

In-session, he had a 0.466s gap to Bedrin in second place and 0.505s to Peugeot in third. CL Motorsport’s Michael Sauter and Prema’s Garcia were the only other improvers.

Toyota junior Jin Nakamura resisted Freddie Slater to win Formula Regional Middle East’s reversed-grid race at Dubai Autodrome.

The pair started first and fourth, but a stellar start by Slater meant the Mumbai Falcons driver was already in second by the first corner. R-ace GP’s Enzo Deligny attacked ART Grand Prix’s Taito Kato for third, and passed him around the outside at the end of the back straight.

Kato lost out to Mumbai Falcons’ Rashid Al Dhaheri in the same place on lap four, then Sainteloc Racing’s Theophile Nael went around the outside of him at turn one on lap five. At that point Slater started to pressure Nakamura, and he had to defend down the back straight a lap later.

Slater’s first attempt at an overtake came there on lap seven, which brought Deligny into play. Al Dhaheri soon joined in too, and attacked Deligny at almost every corner on lap nine before finding a way through in the last sector.

That gave Slater some space behind again, and his next attempt to take first place was a diving move at the end of the back straight on lap 12. Nakamura went off slightly, Slater nosed ahead but Nakamura led on the inside at the next hairpin. Slater had another go later in the lap, but that again made it a four-car fight.

He began lap 13 side-by-side with Nakamura, but could not outpace him and was saved being passed by Al Dhaheri later in the lap thanks to Nael trying to snatch third. They ended up holding position, with Nael gapped on the final lap.

ART GP’s points leader Evan Giltaire was seventh after lap one, and finishing fifth by passing Kato on lap five and fighting his way past Deligny on lap 10. R-ace’s Ugo Ugochukwu swiftly followed him through, and Deligny was overtaken by other team-mate Akshay Bohra on the penultimate lap.

PHM Racing’s Brando Badoer had strong  pace late on but finished ninth, so lost second in the standings to Slater. Kato dropped all the way to 12th, and team-mate Kanato Le fell from fifth to 10th.

Formula 2 race-winner Zak O’Sullivan has secured a seat in Super Formula for 2025, Toyota has announced.

O’Sullivan stepped up to F2 for 2024 with ART Grand Prix and won the Monaco feature race after a late pit-stop under safety car conditions as well as the sprint race at the Hungaroring. However, he vacated his seat before the final three rounds while sitting 14th in the standings, citing funding reasons, and was replaced by fellow Williams junior driver Luke Browning.

He was a late addition to the post-season SF rookie test at Suzuka this month with Kondo Racing and has now been named as a race driver for the team, replacing Kazuto Kotaka alongside Kenta Yamashita.

Kotaka, the 2022 Super Formula Lights champion, moves to TGM Grand Prix – which switches from Honda power to become a team for Toyota development drivers – together with Hibiki Taira, who was SF Lights runner-up in 2023 and contested four SF rounds last year for Team Impul in a car also driven by Theo Pourchaire, Nyck de Vries and Ben Barnicoat.

Impul welcomes an all-new line-up of Jota World Endurance Championship hypercar driver and former FIA F3 racer Oliver Rasmussen and long-time Nissan GT ace and 2017 Japanese F3 champion Mitsunori Takaboshi. Sacha Fenestraz, the 2019 Japanese F3 champion, returns to SF with TOM’S after two seasons in Formula E with Nissan.

Toyota has also confirmed plans for other drivers in its Driver Challenge Program, headed by F2 racer Ritomo Miyata. While Miyata will drive for ART in his second season in F2 – effectively replacing O’Sullivan – he will do with the support of a new collaboration between rival squad Hitech and Toyota, to be known as ‘Hitech TGR’.

Seita Nonaka, who finished third in his third season in SF Lights this year after being Japanese F4 champion in 2021, will serve as a reserve driver in SF alongside a racing campaign in Super GT’s GT300 class.

Rikuto Kobayashi will continue in SF Lights with TOM’S after finishing runner-up in 2024 having graduated to the series as Japanese F4 champion.

For Jin Nakamura, who was runner-up to Kobayashi in F4 and fourth in SF Lights this year, there will be a switch to Formula Regional with an R-ace GP drive in the Middle East and European championships.

Frenchman Esteban Masson will resume his single-seater career in SF Lights with TOM’S alongside an LMP2 drive in the European Le Mans Series. The 2021 French F4 and 2023 Eurocup-3 champion has gained Toyota support after racing a Lexus in WEC’s GT3 class and testing its hypercar this year.

Yuki Sano also joins SF Lights with TOM’S after finishing fourth in Japanese F4 and winning four races from as many starts in FRegional Japan.

Kiyoshi Umegaki and Tokiya Suzuki, who finished seventh and 10th in Japanese F4, will add FRegional Japan programmes alongside continuing in F4, where they will be joined in the TGR-DC Racing School line-up by Yuzuki Miura, Takahiro Kikuchi, Megumu Suzuki and Masana Muto.

The FIA has published the entry list for the 2024 Macau Grand Prix, which will be run for Formula Regional machinery for the first time.

There are 27 cars entered, with two of them – one at MP Motorsport and one at PHM Racing – yet to have drivers confirmed.

Four teams had already announced their line-ups prior to the entry list publication, and seven teams had their driver signings revealed on Monday.

The highest profile drivers to sign up for the grand prix are FIA Formula 3 race-winners Dino Beganovic and Oliver Goethe, who came sixth and seventh in the championship respectively this year.

Red Bull junior Goethe is currently racing in Formula 2 with MP, and will drive for them in Macau alongside Valerio Rinicella who won the non-championship Eurocup-3 races at the start of 2024. Last year Goethe came ninth in the Macau GP from 21st on the grid.

Beganovic, a Ferrari junior, has raced for Prema the entirety of his single-seater career and continues that partnership into next month’s race. He also drove in the 2023 edition of the grand prix, when it ran for F3 cars, qualifying third, finishing the qualification race in fourth but then retiring from the main race.

His team-mates will be Alex Dunne, an F3 rival and McLaren junior who was in second in the 2023 Macau GP’s qualification race but also failed to finish on the Sunday, and this year’s dominant Italian and Emirati F4 champion Freddie Slater.

Also running three cars is PHM Racing, and its confirmed drivers are Emerati driver Rashid Al Dhaheri – who won races in his domestic F4 championship this year – and Matteo De Palo who is currently 16th in FRegional Europe.

Entering two cars each in Macau are Sainteloc Racing and the Japanese teams TOM’S and TGM Grand Prix.

Sainteloc brings across its drivers from Europe, with its Spanish F4 champion and FREC race-winner Theophile Nael racing one car while Eurocup-3 frontrunner Alexander Abkhazava pilots the other.

Stepping down from third-tier single-seaters with TOM’S are Jin Nakamura and Rikuto Kobayashi, currently third and fourth in Super Formula Lights with a win each.

Super Formula team TGM Grand Prix has signed Japanese F4 racer Rintaro Sato and 2023 FRegional Japanese champion Sota Ogawa, who has been out of action this year.

Kiwi Motorsport’s sole car in Macau is being driven by Jett Bowling, who recently hit form in FRegional Americas.
