This year Genesis, the luxury brand of the Hyundai Motor Company, will enter the World Endurance Championship’s top Hypercar class with its own team and car.

As part of the South Korean brand’s expansion into motorsport, it has scouted talents to sign as junior drivers and Jamie Chadwick, Lee and Shin will be the members of the Genesis Magma Racing Trajectory Programme in 2026.

Chadwick was a junior driver of the Williams Formula 1 team until the end of 2024, a year in which she claimed a landmark Indy Nxt victory, then became Genesis’s first junior as she switched to sportscar racing. She came third in the 2025 European Le Mans Series, and will Genesis’s reserve driver in WEC.

Lee’s arrival into the GMRTP was accompanied by the announcement that he would be racing in GB3 this season with Elite Motorsport. The 17-year-old steps up to the third-tier championship after a single year in Formula 4.

He started off with Pinnacle Motorsport in F4 Middle East, contesting two rounds and coming 20th in the standings. Spanish F4 was Lee’s next destination, and he raced for Rodin Motorsport. In the winter championship he was a points-free 31st, and was 22nd in the main championship after missing the final round. His year concluded on the streets of Macau in the FIA F4 World Cup, which he retired from.

“My goal this year is to show steady progress, score points regularly, step on the podium and win races but also build a strong foundation that prepares me for the next stage of my career,” Lee said of his GB3 move.

“I chose GB3 because it’s one of the most competitive and well-structured junior single-seater championships in Europe. It offers a very high technical level, featuring strong teams, excellent circuits and a clear pathway towards FIA Formula 3 and beyond. For a driver aiming to build a serious long-term motorsport career in Europe, GB3 is the ideal environment to develop racecraft, technical understanding and mental strength against top-level competition.”

Shin will race for Hitech GP in the FIA F3 Championship this year. He moves across from Euroformula, which he came third in last year with four victories and eight other podiums. The 21-year-old began 2025 in Formula Regional Oceania, making the podium twice and coming eighth in the standings down under.

It closely mirrored his 2024, in which he was fourth in FRegional Oceania with one win and four other podiums then sixth in Euroformula. His half-season featured two wins, a pole and four other podiums. He has three rounds of FIA F3 experience from 2023.

“I am delighted to be joining the Genesis Magma Racing family as part of the Trajectory Programme. To be part of a Korean team as one of the only Korean drivers racing abroad brings great pride to myself, my family and team,” said Shin.

Michael Shin will return to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2026, and do so with the Hitech GP team he previously drove for in GB3.

Shin, 21, first raced in FIA F3 two years ago when he joined PHM Racing by Charouz for the last three rounds of the 2023 season. His best result from that part-time campaign was a 17th place, and he came 32nd in the standings.

He has remained at the F3 level since by racing in Euroformula with Motopark. Last year he did so as a part-timer, taking two wins and four other podiums in a half-season that put him sixth in the points table, while this year he is fighting for the title and has four victories and six runner-up finishes so far.

“I am delighted to be returning home to Hitech TGR for my full FIA F3 debut,” said Shin.

“Having been away from the team these past two years developing, this feels like a perfect reunion. I am looking forward to getting to work in the post-season tests and building towards a strong debut in Melbourne.”

The South Korean was a podium-free 18th in GB3 when he last raced for Hitech, which has a title partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing, but has been more competitive elsewhere in single-seaters’ fourth tier.

He came 14th in Formula Regional Middle East early in 2023, was fourth in FRegional Oceania and seventh in Eurocup-3 last year, and began 2025 by coming eighth in FRegional Oceania. In a 2025 cameo he also claimed his maiden GB3 podium.

“[Michael] has shown real determination and strong results over the past few years, including during his previous GB3 experience with us, and his performances in Euroformula and briefly in FIA F3 have demonstrated his ability to adapt quickly and compete at a high level,” noted Hitech’s team manager Paul Bellringer.

Euroformula title contender Michael Shin will step down the single-seater ladder this weekend to race in GB3 at Silverstone.

The 20-year-old South Korean is currently third in the Euroformula standings, with two victories and six other podiums from the first five rounds. He also took two wins and four other podiums from a part-time campaign in 2024.

Shin will be part of Hillspeed’s line-up this weekend, and when he last raced in GB3 two years ago he was a Hitech GP driver. In that campaign, in which he missed a round at Silverstone, his best result was a fourth and he came 18th in the standings.

“I am delighted to be joining Hillspeed and returning to the GB3 championship for the Silverstone round,” said Shin.

“The team has delivered strong performances this season so I am very much looking forward to getting on track and seeing what we can do together. In addition, the new car and the introduction of the DRS system make this opportunity all the more interesting.”

Shin has plenty of experience of the Formula Regional category that GB3 is based on. He came 14th in FRegional Middle East in 2023, was seventh in the 2024 Eurocup-3 season, and has come fourth and eighth in the last two FRegional Oceania seasons.

“We really are delighted to sign Michael to the team for this weekend’s visit to Silverstone GP, and we’re all looking forward to working with him and seeing what we can achieve together,” said Hillspeed’s team principal Richard Ollerenshaw.

“Both GB3 outings so far this year for us have been very successful, so we’re aiming high again for the trip back to Silverstone. Obviously this will be Michael’s first race weekend in the new GB3 car, but he’s a very good driver and I’m sure will be up to speed in no time.”

Hilspeed had a three-car line-up consisting of Kanato Le, Freddie Slater and Hiyu Yamakoshi for the opening round, which was also at Silverstone, and for round three at Spa-Francorchamps. All three have clashing race commitments in FRegional Europe at Imola this weekend, so will not be joining Shin on the GB3 grid, but are set to make one more outing with the team.

Michael Shin and Jose Garfias were the winners of Euroformula’s two Sunday races at the Hungaroring.

Nielsen Racing’s Ed Pearson had reversed-grid pole for race two, and was immediately defensive against a fast-starting Michael Shin. After sweeping across down the pit straight, a big lock-up at turn one then sent him and Shin off but they rejoined the track at the front. Behind, Motopark’s points leader Yevan David rose from eighth to fifth.

Pearson had another big turn one lock-up on lap two, then was very unstable under braking on lap three. Shin swept past him safely, then the Motopark driver pulled away to win by 11.921 seconds and move one point ahead of David in the title fight.

David overtook team-mate Garfias on lap three, then got stuck behind Pearson. After BVM Racing’s Tymek Kucharczyk also cleared Garfias on lap five, he closed in on David.

Pearson began to gap himself from his pursuers in the race’s second half, while David repeatedly went wide at turn four but managed to hold Kucharczyk off.

Garfias and his fellow Mexican Diego de la Torre squabbled mid-race, with their Motopark team-mate Fernando Barrichello getting involved on lap eight with two passing attempts. He tried again on the penultimate lap, diving down the inside of de la Torre at turn one and getting ahead but also sending him off.

BVM’s Benjamin Berta started race three on pole and took the widest line possible into the opening corner. Garfias, from fourth on the grid, tucked in on the inside to take the lead as Shin moved up to third ahead.

Kucharczyk took fourth at turn two as front-row starter de la Torre fell down the order and David got up to fifth.

Shin had to defend from Kucharczyk at the start of lap two, and a lap later Kucharczyk darted to the inside at the chicane. The corner was cut by Shin and he remained ahead, and they dropped out of sight of Garfias and Berta.

Kucharczyk’s next overtaking attempt was a turn one dive on lap eight. He locked up, collided with Shin, sent both of them off but did get ahead. However his front wing was broken, and he swiftly fell down the order before pitting.

David then followed Shin, with one look at a move on lap 13, and the latter’s championship lead grew by three points by finishing third. However by the end he was eight seconds behind Berta, who in turn was eight seconds behind Garfias.

Motopark’s Michael Shin dominated Euroformula’s first race at Hockenheim to boost his title ambitions.

Free practice took place on Friday, with a dry morning session and wet afternoon one. Motopark’s Yevan David set a 1m34.136s to lead BVM Racing’s Tymek Kucharczyk by 0.196 seconds in FP1, with Motopark’s Jose Garfias and Shin trailing by 0.242s and 0.364s in third and fourth.

Shawn Rashid (Nielsen Racing) and Paolo Brajnik (NV Racing) were absent, then Shin and Brajnik did not set any laptimes in FP2. David was fastest again in that session, a 1m46.769s putting him 1.511s clear of Garfias.

Kucharczyk went straight to the top in qualifying on Saturday morning, setting a 1m39.007s on a damp track. Five minutes in red flags waved as Garfias went off at turn 13, then after the restart Motopark’s Diego de la Torre made a big improvement to 1m34.2s.

Rashid became the next driver to lap in the 1m34s, before Motopark’s Fernando Barrichello went from ninth to second with a 1m34.344s. His team-mates Everett Stack and Shin broke the 1m35s barrier with five-and-a-half minutes to go, then Shin went fastest with a 1m33.999s.

Stack improved again, to 1m34.141s, but he and Shin were down to fifth and sixth with three minutes left of qualifying as Kucharczyk lowered the pace to 1m32.851s and de la Torre, David and Nielsen’s Ed Pearson all lapped in the 1m33s.

De la Torre reduced Kucharczyk’s advantage to 0.091s two minutes from the end, David set a 1m33.41s in third and Shin set a personal best of 1m33.679s in fourth. Just before the chequered flag, Shin took third with a 1m33.383s.

There was drama before race one began as de la Torre’s car emitted smoke then stopped on track before reaching the grid. Kucharczyk was therefore alone on the front row, while Barrichello stalled on the formation lap so started from the back.

The poleman was behind Shin and David before turn one, but reclaimed second down the inside of the turn six hairpin then ran side-by-side with David until the straight between turns 10 and 11. There they made contact, with Kucharczyk’s rear-right tyre deflating while David’s front wing got damaged. Both pitted for repairs.

Shin was 2.75s clear by the end of lap one, with Pearson inheriting second before going off on lap two and falling behind Stack and Garfias. While Shin built a 20s lead over the course of the 18-lap race, Stack had his mirrors filled.

On lap eight Garfias dived past him at turn six but went deep so Stack drove straight back past. He then had to get defensive on lap 11, which brought Pearson and Barrichello into the fight.

Garfias made his hairpin move again on lap 12, but Stack reclaimed second at turn seven. They were side-by-side through turn eight on lap 13, and Pearson then passed an aggressively defending Garfias on the run to turn 11.

Despite an off, Rashid joined the pack but positions were held through the remaining laps.

Michael Shin will head to New Zealand next month to reunite with the M2 Competition team for a second season in Formula Regional Oceania.

The 20-year-old South Korean came fourth in the championship last season, winning one race and claiming four other podiums. Following that he raced in the FRegional-based Eurocup-3 and the Formula 3-level Euroformula, with Campos Racing and Motopark respectively.

In the former he picked up four podiums and came seventh in the points, but his campaign may be remembered by many for a scary crash, and his half-season in the latter resulted in two wins, three second places, a pole and sixth in the standings.

“Getting to race in FRegional Oceania at the start of the year was an unforgettable experience for me,” said Shin.

“It was an intense season full of learning as well as enjoying the best of what New Zealand has to offer. Thus I am thankful to M2 Competition for having me back for the 2025 championship. We had a solid debut season together and I’m confident we can build upon that. The ambience racing down under is like no other, and I’m really looking forward to making a return.”

Shin’s return will mark the start of his fourth year in single-seater racing. He was 11th in British Formula 4, 23rd in the Motorsport Games’ F4 event and 29th in F4 United Arab Emirates in 2022, then last year was 14th in FRegional Middle East, 18th in GB3 and had a best finish of 17th from three FIA Formula 3 Championship rounds.

Also recently confirmed on the 2025 FRegional Oceania grid are Nicholas Monteiro at MTEC Motorsport and Barrett Wolfe at Giles Motorsport.

Monteiro, 19, was eighth in Brazilian F4 in 2022 then left his home nation to race in third-tier series USF Pro 2000 for the last two years. Two 11th places were his best results as a rookie, and he came 13th in the 2024 standings with five top-10 results.

Wolfe is stepping up after two years in F4. The American was ninth in the 2023 Skip Barber Formula Race Series standings, and fifth in United States F4 this year. The 21-year-old made the podium twice in a depleted grid.

Euroformula had three different winners across its three races at a wet Red Bull Ring this weekend.

Practice was topped by points leader Brad Benavides. In a wet FP1 he set a 1m40.919s to lead debuting Motopark team-mate Edward Pearson by 0.741 seconds, with his other debuting team-mate Jose Garfias 1.009s behind.

Benavides’s advantages was reduced in the drier FP2, his 1m24.328s putting him 0.167s ahead of Garfias and 0.372s up on Pearson.

The track was declared wet for qualifying on Saturday morning, and Garfias set a 1m23.571s to take pole by 0.338s over Benavides. Pearson was 0.423s off in third, BVM Racing’s Francesco Simonazzi lagged by 0.508s in fourth and Motopark’s Fernando Barrichello was fifth.

Garfias struggled with his first ever Euroformla start, then struggled to get up the hill and retired before reaching turn three. Benavides took the lead and gapped himself from the rest of the field, going on to win the 19-lap race by 15.634s.

Simonazzi claimed second at turn one, ahead of Michael Shin, Levente Revesz and Pearson. The quartet bunched up on lap three, with Simonazzi having a tricky job diplacing water at the front as conditions significantly worsened.

Pearson cleared Revesz a few laps later, and on lap 10 used suprerior traction exiting turn three to pass Shin too. Revesz then hassled Shin for several laps, but could not get past.

On lap six Pearson attacked Simonazzi, then came under attack from Shin at turn four. He cut him off, and Revesz finally cleared Shin at turn six. Pearson was all over Simonazzi on the next lap, and took second thanks to suprerior uphill traction.

Revesz pulled off another turn six move to overtake Simonazzi on the penultimate lap, and Barrichello was a distant sixth after a big off on the last lap but got reversed-grid pole for race two.

The wet weather meant the safety car led the field for two laps, and when green flags waved Shin instantly attacked Barrichello. A switchback move got him ahead exiting turn one, Barrichello went deep and got back past entering turn three, then Shin led agan at the exit.

Simonazzi also passed Barrichello before the end of lap three, but Barrichello dived past him at turn four next time by to return to second. Shin was already 2.3s up the road

That gap shrunk by a second on lap seven, and on lap 10 he took the lead through turn five. Shin then had to focus on holding off Simonazzi, which he managed to do by just 0.214s. Revesz was fourth, Benavides kept his nose clean in fifth and Garfias passed Pearson for sixth a few laps from the end.

Shin had reversed-grid pole for the dry race three ahead of Barrichello, who had a messy opening lap. He went off at turn three, made a great lunge around the outside of Benavides at turn four to regain second but then went off and fell to last.

Simonazzi moved into third, and Garfias passed Pearson for fourth at turn five on lap two. After that the order was set, and Shin won by 0.507s.

Motopark will expand to six cars for this weekend’s Euroformula round at the Red Bull Ring, as Jose Garfias and Edward Pearson join its line-up.

The German team has dominated the Formula 3-level series since joining it in 2019, and it fielded five cars through the second half of that campaign. For 2020 it ran four cars full-time and two others part-time, although on the entry list that was split in half as three cars competed under the banner of its Japanese satellite squad CryptoTower Racing Team.

That continued into 2021 and ’22, with all six cars entered full-time, then last year Motopark had four full-time drivers of its own (with the sporting regulations allowing no more), with two full-timers at CryptoTower. A seventh car, also entered through CryptoTower, contested the season finale.

Although Euroformula kept its four-car cap on team sizes for 2024, there have only been six full-time entries and five of those are Motopark’s. It added a sixth car to its line-up for round three at Spa-Francorchamps. Michael Shin will be back in his regular seat with the team this weekend after being replaced by Enzo Richer last time out.

The 17-year-old Pearson steps up to Euroformula from GB3, where he is currently 18th in the standings with a best finish of eighth place. He will not complete his second season with Fortec Motorsports there, having come 19th in the 2023 standings with two podiums, but is not currently set to see out the campaign in Euroformula either as he has signed only for this month’s rounds at the Red Bull Ring and at Barcelona.

Garfias meanwhile was a race-winner in NACAM Formula 4 and came through the Seven GP driver development run by Mexican racer Picho Toledano. He stepped up to GB3 in 2021, and had a best finish of fifth from the first six rounds before leaving the series. Garfias then joined Monolite Racing for three Formula Regional European Championship rounds, with two 20th places being the highlight of his six races there.

He spent 2022 on the sidelines, but returned to action last year in Eurocup-3 where he came fourth in the standings with MP Motorsport. The 19-year-old switched teams to Sainteloc Racing for 2024, coming 27th in a part-time FRegional Middle East campaign and then returning to Eurocup-3 where he is currently ninth in the standings.

Eurformula’s grid size at the Red Bull Ring will also be boosted by the all-Czech combination of STK Melnik and its driver (and managing director) Roman Roubicek. He will drive a HWA-powered Dallara 320, and if his debut goes well he may do further rounds. He already has experience of the car, since he races it in the Austrian Formula 3 Cup where he sits eighth in the overall points table.

Michael Shin had a scary crash in Eurocup-3’s first race at Zandvoort, but remarkably escaped the incident unscathed despite barrel-rolling seven-and-a-half times.

The Campos Racing driver made contact with Sainteloc Racing’s Alexander Abkhazava approaching the crest of Slotermakerbocht after they ran side-by-side through turn five. He lost his front wing, speared off into the barriers and the left-hand side of his car rode up them, pitching him into a set of rolls.

While the strength of the tethers improved safety for everyone in the vicinity since the car’s front wheels did not fly off, they were entirely detached from the suspension arms and that increased the speed of the rolls.

The race was red flagged and eventually restarted. Shin was able to contest race two the next day, which he finished ninth in.

“Unfortunately my car was heavily damaged and was not suitable to be driven for race two. However, Campos worked really hard overnight to organise and set up another car for me to drive,” Shin told Formula Scout. Palou Motorsport is said to have provided the replacement chassis.

“There were minor differences that I needed to adapt to such as the feeling on the clutch. I tried to approach the race like I would have had under normal circumstances. Obviously my goal was to finish the race, but that didn’t mean I was going to push less or back out of overtaking opportunities.”

He beat two of his team-mates, finishing seventh on-the-road and 8.3 seconds behind the winner before a 10s penalty dropped him to ninth.

“I would say that I felt more thankful rather than I did proud [of the result]. I was almost certain after the incident that my weekend was done. For me to then be able to participate in and finish race two made me really grateful to all those who made it possible. We had good pace throughout the weekend so that’s definitely a positive for me to take on for the remaining races of the season.

“Physically, I felt fine during race two, which is a testament to the safety of our cars. I probably wasn’t as sharp mentally as I would have been, but I am all good now.”

Reflecting on the immediate aftermath of the crash, he added: “The medical staff were very attentive and were checking my condition straight away. In the medical centre they went through examinations that they couldn’t perform on track like checking blood pressure. Because it was a high-speed crash, the checks were more extensive than they would have been otherwise.

“I was very impressed by how they dealt with the situation because I did not have to make any effort to move in the process of getting transported all the way to the bed in the medical centre. Actually, they insisted that it would be best if i stay still just in case I had sustained injuries that I couldn’t feel in the moment.”

Brad Benavides, Francesco Simonazzi and Michael Shin were the Euroformula race-winners in round two at Hockenheim.

Benavides set a 1m31.134s to take pole for race one by 0.657 seconds over Motopark team-mate Levente Revesz, with Jakob Bergmeister, Simonazzi, the debuting ex-FIA Formula 3 racer Shin and Paolo Brajnik completing the top six. Fernando Barrichello had his six best laps deleted so ended up 5.661s off the pace in seventh and last.

Shin failed to get going at the start, Brajnik pulled to the side (then got wheeled off the grid) and Benavides lurched off the line so dropped to third behind Revesz and Simonazzi.

BVM Racing driver Simonazzi had a go at Revesz at turn two, but then was attacked by Benavides at turn seven and lap one finished with 1.46s covering the trio. Benavides tried going around the outside of Simonazzi at the turn six hairpin on lap two, then on the inside on lap three and that time he got it done.

A flurry of fastest laps soon brought him onto the rear of Revesz, and on lap nine of 18 he took the inside line at the turn seven right-hander and got into the lead just as Simonazzi had started closing back in on him. Once up front, Benavides quickly established a 1.5s gap and that grew considerably in the last laps as Simonazzi finally attempted to pass Revesz after shadowing him for a long time.

On the penultimate lap they went side-by-side en route to turn six, and at the same corner a lap later he took the outside line and it did not work. But Revesz then had a brief wobble and Simonazzi snuck through. However with 10s of track limits penalties hanging over him, Simonazzi ended up finishing sixth and Benavides won by 6.088s over Revesz. Bergmeister was only a further 0.543s behind, and Shin was fourth despite his own two-second track limits penalty.

Simonazzi’s finishing position put him on reversed-grid pole for race two, which he led lights-to-flag for his fifth Euroformula win. Bergmeister was his closest rival for the first three laps, then Benavides passed him at the hairpin and sat in Simonazzi’s mirrors for the remaining 14 laps.

Bergmeister finished 5.754s behind in third, Revesz was a distant 14.602s back in fourth and Shin beat Barrichello to fifth after both got penalties while battling.

Shin won from reversed-grid pole in race three, which Brajnik missed. Simonazzi tried passing Shin at turn six on laps one, two and five, with his third attempt getting him ahead until he ran wide at the corner exit and dropped back behind. He made further attempts on laps six and nine before Shin edged away.

Revesz got into third at the start, with Benavides passing him at the hairpin before losing out at turn eight. On lap five they swapped places, with Revesz going off at turn eight, then did again on lap 11. Bergmeister demoted Benavides to fifth a lap later and briefly pressured Revesz.
