Graham Brunton Racing’s Alex Berg took a maiden GB4 victory in the final race of the weekend at Donington Park.

With the fastest 12 drivers from qualifying reversed to form the front six rows of the grid, Berg go to line up from pole and made a great launch to lead Arden’s Leon Wilson into Redgate.

They were able to edge clear of Fortec Motorsports’ Thomas Ingram Hill, while Hillspeed’s Leandro Juncos fought past Douglas Motorsport duo Enzo Hallman and Luke Hilton into fourth in the early stages.

Hilton, meanwhile, ran wide at Fogarty and fell behind Hallman, Pace Performance’s Stefan Bostandjiev and Hillspeed’s Daniel Guinchard.

Berg maintained a small gap to Wilson until the closing stages, as Juncos continued to make progress by dispatching Ingram Hill from third into the Melbourne hairpin at the halfway stage. Having caught Wilson late on, Juncos tried the same move at the hairpin on the penultimate lap, but the pair collided and both spun down the order.

The incident allowed Berg to break clear to win by one second, with Hallman and Bostandjiev inheriting their first podiums in second and third place. By finishing fourth, Guinchard leaves Donington as championship leader.

Race two winner Ary Bansal prevailed in an early battle with his Elite Motorsport team-mate Alex Kattoulas to finish fifth, with Hilton losing out to the duo and slipping to seventh.

Following their late clash, Wilson and Juncos trailed home in eighth and 14th respectively, while Ingram Hill continued to lose places during the race and finished ninth ahead of his team-mate Jack Taylor.

There were several incidents further down in the field. Elite’s pre-race points leader Isaac Phelps was involved in a first-lap collision with GBR’s Callum Baxter and was forced to pit for a new front wing. KMR Sport’s Megan Bruce, Arden’s Ava Dobson and Douglas Motorsport’s Dayton Coulthard all made early pitstops as well, while Fortec’s Luca Magnussen walked away from a heavy crash after tangling with ADM’s Jason Pribyl yards before the chequered flag.

GB4 enters a new era this weekend at Donington Park, with its updated car attracting a record 25-strong grid

Since its creation in 2022, GB4 has used Tatuus’s first-generation Formula 4 car from 2014 to provide drivers with a more affordable route into single-seaters compared to other F4 championships, but grid numbers have been modest.

Entries have almost doubled in number this year, thanks to the introduction of the halo-shod Tatuus MSV GB4-025 car. It’s a modified version of parent series GB3’s outgoing chassis, and has spiked interest to where GB4 is now rivalling British F4.

The car has been detuned to F4 specification, meaning less horsepower and more simplified aero, and the side-mounted air intake has been removed. Its limited slip differential and two-litre normally-aspirated engine are different from the outgoing machine, and teams and drivers believe this gives them a more ‘raceable’ car.

“It’s cost-effective,” says Wayne Douglas, whose Douglas Motorsport outfit has entered GB4 for the first time after winning multiple races in GB3. “It’s nothing against the turbo engine, but you definitely have equalisation [without it] just because there’s less stuff to control. It’s a great little package, ideal for the kids, there’s a few more set-up changes than [other] F4 cars so they learn a little bit. The concept is the same, roughly the same weight, same horsepower, so it’s an equal car.”

There is again a seven-event calendar, with three races per weekend. There is a change to the format of race three at each event, as the top 12 from qualifying will be reversed to form the grid. Previously a fully-reversed grid was used. The season starts and concludes at Donington Park, with the other rounds at Oulton Park, Snetterton, Brands Hatch and Silverstone. The full Grand Prix layout will be used at the last two, and Silverstone will be visited twice.

This year’s champion will receive a £50,000 prize, qualifying on pole earns a driver £125 and a further £1,000 will go to the driver who accumulates the most poles. The highest-placed female driver in the points table will be awarded a €50,000 contribution (an increase from 2024’s fund of €30,000) towards a 2026 F1 Academy drive.

2024:2nd in United FFord, 19th in FFord Festival, 19th in Walter Hayes Trophy

The American shone in his first year racing in the UK by coming second in United FFord championship with two victories and three other podiums. He was also 19th in both of FFord’s marquee events: the FFord Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy. He only appeared in half of GB4’s pre-season test days, so may face an early learning curve early adapting to slicks-and-wings.

Arden

Having competed at every tier of single-seaters bar the top one, Arden fields a two-car line-up at the entry level this year.

5. Ava Dobson USA, 16
2024: 17th in GB4, 31st in USF Juniors

After competing in three different championships in her homeland in 2023, Dobson’s 2024 campaign in USF Juniors was cut short after being injured in a high-speed collision at Barber Motorsports Park. She was back behind the wheel later in the year in GB4 for her UK racing debut, and she now returns to the series for her first full season.

27. Leon Wilson England, 17
2024: 10th in GB4

Wilson has come through the ranks at Arden, having been part of its Young Racing Driver Academy prior to moving into car racing with the team in GB4 last year. He took a podium and two fastest laps, and will be looking to build on that this term.

Douglas Motorsport

The race-winning GB3 outfit is embarking on a slightly different challenge in GB4 and is committing to it with three cars.

7. Enzo Hallman Sweden, 17
2024: 2nd in FNordic, 3rd in NXT Gen Cup

A promising rookie single-seater campaign in Formula Nordic, where he was runner-up in the points with five victories despite missing the first two rounds, helped him win the prestigious Ronnie Peterson Memorial Foundation scholarship in his homeland. While he hasn’t got as much testing mileage under his belt as others, he could be one to watch.

2024: Karting

One of three sons of ex-Formula 1 drivers in GB4, Coulthard makes his car racing debut as a graduate of the UK’s kart scene.

2024: 5th in Radical Cup UK, 7th in Gulf Radical Cup

Although he is new to single-seaters, Hilton already has three years of car racing experience behind him. He won multiple races in the BRSCC’s Ford Fiesta Junior championship, as well as in Radical sportscars in both the UK and United Arab Emirates. His test-topping form at Silverstone last month suggests he will be a victory contender.

Elite Motorsport

The front-running team that steered Alisha Palmowski to championship runner-up spot in 2024 look set to be in good shape again this season with a strong three-car line-up.

35. Isaac Phelps England, 15
2024: 5th in Ginetta Junior, Ginetta Junior Winter Series champion

Showed promise upon graduating from karting last year with five wins across Ginetta Junior’s main and winter series, and he took the title in the latter. Having topped GB4’s first test day with its new car at Silverstone, it looks like he’ll be in the mix.

46. Aryaman Bansal India, 15
2024: 14th in FTrophy UAE, NC in Spanish F4

The Bangalorean is relatively new to car racing, having made his debut at the 2024 Spanish F4 finale and then contested the UAE’s two-round Formula Trophy for F4 cars. Prior to that he spent two years competing in British Karting Championship events, and has looked close to the pace straight away in a GB4 car.

51. Alexandros Kattoulas Japan/Greece, 19
2024: 32nd in GB3

Has plenty of pedigree from his karting career, where he competed against three of this year’s F1 rookies. He stepped away from racing at the end of 2018 before returning to make his debut in cars at Donington Park last year in GB3. Kattoulas is another likely victory contender in GB4, having topped eight pre-season test sessions.

Fortec Motorsports

Linus Granfors added another title to Fortec’s long list of single-seater honours by becoming 2024 GB4 champion, and this season there is a mixture of experience among its drivers.

8. Thomas Ingram Hill England, 15
2024: 11th in Ginetta Junior

Making his single-seater debut this weekend, having started out in karting and scored nine top-10 finishes during his rookie car racing campaign in Ginetta Junior last year.

The third member of the Magnussen family to be embarking on a British single-seater campaign, the son of 1994 British F3 champion-turned sportscar ace Jan faces a learning curve this season as he graduates from karting.

Competed with GBR in the first three rounds of 2024 before switching his focus to the Radical Cup North America, where he scored multiple wins in the 1340 class, including a triple triumph at his home event on the streets of Toronto. Returning to GB4 for a full season in 2025, he is aiming to be frontrunner this time around.

2024: 7th in GB4, 11th FFord Festival

Remains with GBR for his sophomore season, having scored two podiums and also raced for the team at the FFord Festival as a Team Canada scholar in 2024. Prior to that he was Toyo Tires F1600 championship runner-up in Canada, winning on the F1 support bill in Montreal.

2024: 14th in British F4

The son of 1986 Osella F1 driver Allen Berg has also represented GBR and the Team Canada Scholarship in FFord, reaching the final at both the FFord Festival and WHT in 2023. Last year he headed to slicks-and-wings via British F4 and scored one win, and that experience should stand him in good stead despite his lack of pre-season testing in GB4’s new car.

Having made a name for itself in GB3, Hillspeed is returning to GB4 after being a title contender in the inaugural season.

49. Daniel Guinchard England, 18

The former Mercedes-AMG F1 junior is making a welcome return to racing, having last competed in 2023 when he drove in British F4. Budget issues meant an early end to that campaign, and he was a race-winner in the championship the year before. His experience should make him a victory contender in GB4 despite limited pre-season running.

2024: 19th in USF Juniors

He only began racing last year, and chose IndyCar feeder series USF Juniors for his first steps. He did four rounds and netted a best result of fourth at Barber. Since then he has driven in GB3 testing with Chris Dittmann Racing, before deciding to race in GB4. Has also worked as an assistant engineer for his father’s IndyCar team Juncos Hollinger Racing.

KMR Sport

Kevin Mills’s reigning three-time champion team will want further success, but with origins in FFord this new car leaves more to learn for the team than rivals with experience of higher categories.

3. Alex O’Grady Ireland, 16
2024: 12th in French F4

Took two podium finishes in French F4 as a rookie fresh from karting. Will be hoping to run at the sharp end of the field despite less pre-season testing than his team-mates.

2024: 11th in GB4, 11th in Caterham 270R championship

Has switched from Fox for her sophomore campaign, having scored a best result of sixth as a rookie while also shining with multiple podium finishes in Caterham sportscars. Her testing form pre-season suggests she is set for improved results in 2025, and is also one of the leading contenders for the F1 Academy prize.

15. Lily-May Watkins England, 17
2024: Karting

One of the most inexperienced drivers on the grid having mainly competed in indoor karting until now. Her time spent in the YRDA and a full GB4 testing programme over winter in both last year’s car and the new machine have helped her make significant progress ahead of her car racing debut.

Pace Performance

The Ginetta Junior outfit is expanding into GB4 this year, and has had help behind the wheel from F2 race-winner and current Super Formula racer Zak O’Sullivan in testing as it prepares to tackle single-seater racing for the first time.

17. Stefan Bostandjiev Bulgaria, 20
2024: Italian GT Sprint Championship, 7th in Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe – Pro

The Iron Lynx sports car racer has chosen to switch disciplines, and like his team is making his open-wheel debut this weekend. He will compete part-time in GB4 this season alongside a full GB3 campaign with Fortec Motorsports.

2024: Ginetta GT Championship

After bringing a decorated karting career to a halt in 2019, McLean is making a full-time return to racing in GB4, where he will make his single-seater debut. He already has three car racing starts under his belt, having scored a best result of sixth during a cameo in the Ginetta GT Championship at Donington Park last year.

Rossoverde Scorpio Racing

Rossoverde Racing, which has competed part-time in GB4 since its inception, has joined forces with one-time GB4 entrant Scorpio Motorsport for a full-time assault.

British Formula 4 race-winner Alex Berg has confirmed a switch to GB4 for 2025 with Graham Brunton Racing.

Berg briefly raced for GBR in Formula Ford 1600 as a Team Canada scholar in 2023. He finished 13th at the FFord Festival and retired from the final of the Walter Hayes Trophy.

The 18-year-old spent three years racing in the USA between 2021 and ’23, starting out in the Mazda MX-5 Challenge Cup before moving into single-seaters in United States F4. There, he came fifth in 2022 and seventh the following season, taking one win and seven other podiums.

His second single-seater triumph came last year in British F4 at Thruxton, and he finished the campaign 14th in the standings for Fortec Motorsports.

“I am very excited to join Graham Brunton Racing for the 2025 GB4 season, “ said Berg. “After the most challenging race season of my life in 2024, I’ve spent the off-season reconstructing myself, building self-confidence, and most importantly, putting together the budget to come back stronger than ever in 2025.

“Ever since I raced for Team Canada in the FFord Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy with GBR in 2023, I’ve always dreamed of the chance to come back to the team and I’m extremely grateful for Craig and Graham’s kindness and their willingness to work with me!

“We are delighted to welcome Alex back into the team,” added GBR’s team principal Craig Brunton. “He competed in the FFord Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy under the Team Canada Scholarship in 2023 so we know him well.

“He’s a real engineer driver, always thinking about how the car is working under him, and I think the new 2025-spec GB4 car will really suit him.”

Berg, whose father Allen raced in Formula 1 for Osella in 1986, will drive alongside Mayer Deonarine and Callum Baxter at GBR in an all-Canadian line-up. He is the third son of a former F1 driver to confirm his place on this year’s GB4 grid, joining Luca Magnussen and Dayton Coulthard.

Canadian racer Callum Baxter has been announced as spending a second season in GB4 with Scottish team Graham Brunton Racing.

The 18-year-old claimed two podiums driving for the Knockhill-based outfit last year, and came seventh in the standings. He ended 2024 by competing at the Formula Ford Festival with the backing as a Team Canada scholar, and finished 11th.

Prior to racing in the UK, Baxter spent two years in Ontario’s Toyo Tires F1600 series in his homeland, coming fifth in the 2022 standings and runner-up the following season.

“Racing in the GB4 championship with Graham Brunton Racing last year was a great experience,” said Baxter. “I am proud of what we accomplished and I learned a lot, gaining experience and confidence throughout the season. I’m excited to return to GB4 with the team for the 2025 season.”

Elite Motorsport and new team Pace Performance have also made their first signings for 2025.

Driving for Elite will be Alex Kattoulas, who made his car racing debut with Fortec Motorsports in the penultimate round of the 2023 GB3 season and took a best result of 17th. The 19-year-old is therefore making a step down for his first full campaign in cars.

“My aim is to continue to learn and achieve the results I know I can,” said Kattoulas. “My experience level will match those in GB4, so in my maiden single-seater season, I feel like I can be competitive.”

The Schropshire-based Pace Performance was founded by former British GT and Caterham sportscar racer Sean Byrne in 2023, and last year competed on the same support bill as GB4 in Ginetta Junior and the Ginetta GT Championship. It has signed Josh McLean for its entry into single-seater racing.

McLean, who was a successful karter until 2019, made his return to racing in the Ginetta GT Championship with Pace at Donington Park last year and netted a best result of sixth.

“I can’t put into words how excited I am to be back behind the wheel after a long break away from motorsport,” revealed McLean.

“Ever since I stepped away, I’ve been longing to come back and now is the perfect opportunity for me to do so; especially in the GB4 championship. I’m really looking forward to working with Kokoro and Pace for the season and can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in my debut championship in cars.”

Pace is not the only new team set to be on this year’s GB4 grid, as sportscar squad Rossoverde Racing has joined forces with Scorpio Motorsport for a planned multi-car entry, while former Arden team manager Gary Ward’s ADM outfit has also joined the championship.

Scottish team Graham Brunton Racing has added another Canadian youngster to its GB4 line-up for 2024, with 15-year-old Mayer Deonarine joining to make his slicks-and-wings debut.

So far Deonarine is only confirmed for the season-opening round at Oulton Park which takes place on March 29 and April 1.

Deonarine and his future team-mate Callum Baxter are both members of the Road To Racing Canada programme, a charity which supports racing drivers who are yet to make it as professionals and has fully funded Deonarine’s Oulton Park outing through its Diversity and Inclusion scholarship.

“Open-wheel racing in the UK has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I am incredibly grateful to Road to Racing for providing me with this incredible opportunity,” said Deonarine. “I am eager to learn and grow as a racer and to showcase my talent on the international stage.”

At the start of this month, when he was still only 14, Deonarine started his car racing career by entering Radical Cup North America’s season opener at Sebring. He sits third in the Pro 1340 standings after making the class podium in all three races, and plans to make further appearances in the series.

Last year he was 12th in the Florida Winter Tour and 13th in the ROK Vegas final for ROK Junior karts, and came 22nd in the final for KA100 Junior karts in Superkarts USA’s SuperNationals event.

GBR team principal Graham Brunton added: “I’m thrilled to have Road To Racing Canada supporting our GB4 drivers Mayer Deonarine and Callum Baxter. Formula 1600 star Callum Baxter will move into slicks-and-wings racing this year as he joins Graham Brunton Racing in GB4.

The 17-year-old Canadian missed out on racing for the Scottish team in last year’s Formula Ford Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy as he was one of the losing finalists who competed for the Team Canada Scholarship.

Baxter was runner-up in Ontario’s Toyo Tires F1600 series in 2023, winning five races over the course of the season, and came fifth in the 2022 standings. F1600 cars are without wings, meaning he will face a new challenge in the first-generation Formula 4 cars of GB4.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity. Racing in the UK is every young driver’s dream,” said Baxter. “Obviously a huge challenge awaits, and I am very fortunate to be surrounded with incredible support.

“GBR is a fantastic team to be with, and their experience will really help me. Road to Racing [a Canadian athlete support programme] has also played an important role, along with my family, in making this year happen. I am incredibly thankful to everyone. Now I can’t wait to get this year started.”

Graham Brunton, team principal of GBR, added: “We’ve worked with a lot of exciting young drivers over the past few years, but we’re massively excited to have Callum with us in GB4 this year. His record speaks for itself, and having won a lot in karting, he’s continued to do that in cars, and I have no doubt that he will continue that upward trajectory with us in 2024.”

Graham Brunton Racing has signed Seb Murray for the final two rounds of the GB4 season.

The 16-year-old made his single-seater debut in the Formula 4 United Arab Emirates Trophy event at Yas Marina Circuit that supported last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and he finished his first two single-seater races with Xcel Motorsport in eighth and ninth place.

He spent most of 2022 in karting, coming ninth in the IAME UAE Series and 63rd in the IAME Euro Series for X30 Senior karts, and also racing those in a club event in England, and ninth in Rotax Max Challenge UAE’s Rotax Senior class.

The UAE-based Scot began 2023 in F4, joining Italian team Cram Motorsport to contest the full F4 UAE season. He had a best finish of 13th from 15 races, and his best qualifying result was 24th. Since then he has done F4 testing in Europe.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to drive for GBR. New tracks, new car and a new team will be a fantastic learning experience and I can’t wait,” said Murray, who will debut at Brands Hatch this weekend.

Graham Brunton, boss of the eponymous GBR team, added: “We’re delighted to add Sebastian to our line-up for the final two rounds of this year’s GB4 championship. He has shown a lot of potential through his karting career, and joins our team with some good F4 knowledge courtesy of his races in the Middle East.

“Brands Hatch and Donington Park are very different circuits to those he is used to, but it’s all part of the challenge that with our help, will enable him to develop further as a driver.”

GB4 race-winner Jeremy Fairbairn will continue in the series for the remainder of the season after securing a switch to Graham Brunton Racing.

Fairbairn started the season with Kevin Mills Racing and won the opening race at Oulton Park, but recently announced he had parted ways with the team after three rounds, having slipped to fifth in the standings.

The 18-year-old will make his debut with GBR in this weekend’s round at Snetterton alongside Harry Burgoyne Jr, who has been the team’s sole driver this year thus far after graduating from karting.

“I’m really pleased to be linking up with GBR for the rest of the season,” said Fairbairn.

“Having seen the team operate in the paddock at the race events so far, I felt it would be an opportunity for me to reset and start over again, and I’m looking to help push the team forward.

“I’m very grateful to everyone I’ve worked with so far this year, and I’m looking forward to joining up with GBR during testing this week at Snetterton before the races on Saturday and Sunday.”

“We’re really pleased to bring Jeremy into the team ahead of the Snetterton event,” added GBR’s team manager Craig Brunton. “He’s already done some great work with us and settled in alongside Harry really well.

“I’m sure he’ll get up to speed with us really quickly, and hopefully we can return him to winning ways before too long. It’s great to be back up to two cars, and Jeremy’s experience and speed mixed with Harry’s potential is going to be a big benefit for the team.”

Graham Brunton Racing has made its first GB4 signing for 2023, with Harry Burgoyne Jr joining the team for his car racing debut.

Burgoyne has spent the last years in junior karting, finishing third in the CIK-FIA World Championship in the OK Junior class in 2020. In 2021 he was 26th in the WSK Champions Cup, before concentrating on competitions for X30 Junior karts.

He came fourth in the IAME I-Games in 2020 and ‘21, then was sixth in the IAME Warriors Final two years ago and 13th in 2022. At home, the 15-year-old Scot was seventh in the British Karting Championship in 2021 and third last season as well as winning the Little Green Man series.

“I am excited to take the next step of my motorsport career in GB4 with Graham Brunton Racing,” said Burgoyne.

“It’s a big step up from karting but I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead. I would like to thank all my sponsors, family, supporters and Mick Barrett Racing for all their continued support.”

Knockhill-based outfit GBR expanded into the F4-spec GB4 series in 2022 after several successful years in Formula Ford 1600, fielding an all-female line-up of Chloe Grant and Logan Hannah and scored a maiden victory with the latter at Donington Park.

“We are all set to get going with Harry,” said GBR’s team manager Craig Brunton. “He’s shown real talent in his karting career and the move into cars for him is an exciting step. Working with young drivers is something we specialise in and we cannot wait to hit the track later this month and start our young driver development programme with Harry.”

Past Formula Ford Festival winners Roberto Moreno and Marc Goossens are the biggest names on the entry list for this year’s event, which takes place this weekend.

Moreno won the Brands Hatch-based event in 1980, the same year he became British FFord champion, then went on to win the Macau Grand Prix and come second in European Formula 2 before graduating to IndyCar.

After two seasons he returned to junior single-seaters and won the International Formula 3000 title, then earned a Formula 1 seat with Coloni. Moreno moved to Benetton in 1990 and earned his first podium, but after he drove for backmarker teams.

In 1996 he returned to IndyCar, and in 2000 won the Grand Prix of Cleveland and came third in the standings.

Last year he made his Festival comeback, driving for the Snetterton Speed Shop team run by his old boss Jonathan Lewis and also reuniting with his mechanic Micky Galter. The Van Diemen RF80 he raced in even had his 1980 livery.

Moreno enjoyed the experience, but got no further than Saturday’s progression races, and at Brands Hatch’s Kentagon on the Sunday night promised he would return if in a modern car.

That hinged on his USA work commitments not clashing with the 2022 Festival date, and he confirmed last Sunday he would be free to attend to coach fellow Brazilian racer and karting star Cadu Bonini, starting his single-seater career this weekend with Kevin Mills Racing.

At the same time, FFord expert Alan Bowles started searching for a modern car for Moreno. On Sunday evening he called Graham Brunton Racing, and by Monday lunchtime a deal had been struck for the 63-year-old to race a Ray GR16.

“What an honour to have Roberto in the team,” said GBR’s eponymous team boss. “I’m at an age where he was one of the superheroes to me watching the sport. I saw how well he did last year, he may actually suit a modern car more. He spent considerably more years in car that are really stiffly-suspended like a ontemporary Ray FF1600, so hopefully it will suit him.”

Moreno flies to England on Wednesday, and coaches Bonini in pre-event testing for two days before testing his own car on Friday. Bonini has done two FF1600 tests to prepare for his debut.

Goossens meanwhile will line up in a Simon Langman-owned Van Diemen RF80 co-run by Bowles’ Kejan Engineering company and Peninsula Historic Motorsport.

It was a deal that was also intigated at last year’s Festival, with Langman setting Bowles the task of finding a suitable driver for the car.

“I put my thinking camp on, find a driver who’s still racing and still has the hunger for it, and Goossens fits the bill,” Bowles said.

Goossens, who is 52, is still racing in the NASCAR Euro Series. His junior career began in FF1600, winning the 1991 British championship and Festival. He was then third in British Formula 3, and twice came third in Int. F3000.

After that he finished fourth in the Le Man 24 Hours, raced in Super Formula, the FIA GT championship, IMSA, Belcar and eventually NASCAR.
