India’s MRF Challenge was a popular series for foreign drivers and also had races overseas prior to its 2020 demise. Last year it was revived as a Chennai-based series where local talents get to develop and shine

Run as the MRF Challenge from 2012 to 2020, the India-based series with title sponsorship from its tyre supplier was revived in late 2022 as MRF Formula 2000 with the same two-litre cars of old (comparable to the Formula Renault chassis found previously in Europe) and a repeat of its old multi-year structure, which you can read about here.

A year ago it then began its 2023 season, with three rounds consisting of three races each and all taking place at Chennai. A grid of five F2000 cars was attracted for the opening round, with a secondary grid of MRF Formula 1600 entrants starting further behind as their races were held concurrently with F2000’s. Arya Singh took pole, but Sandeep Kumar came from third to win the eight-lap season opener by a slim 0.39 seconds. Aditya Swaminathan and Singh completed the podium.

Overnight rain made for tricky conditions in the 10-lap race two, and the ultra experienced Chetan Korada – who races with prosthetic feet – won by 0.623s over Kumar. Rohaan Madesh was a further 0.494s behind in third.

Kumar doubled up in race three, with Singh 0.259s behind and Korada completing the podium.

Rain led to rescheduling of races during round two, which attracted six F2000 cars, and in qualifying Swaminathan took pole. He converted that into race one success by 0.499s, chased all the way by Madesh while Korada was a distant third.

Swaminathan won again in race two, growing his margin of victory to 0.754s. Singh was second, and Kumar was third.

Race three was another close one, and Singh missed out on victory yet again. This time Kumar denied him by 0.417s, and he only finished 0.342s ahead of Madesh.

Kumar entered December’s final round with 25 points in hand over Singh, who was two points ahead of Korada and seven ahead of title outsider Swaminathan.

2023 MRF F2000

Although Kumar took pole, he ended up having the worst weekend of the quartet with no podium finishes. Three fourth places was still enough to claim the title though as the F2000 field reverted to five cars.

Singh finally became a winner in race one, pipping the debuting Jaden Pariat by 0.206s. Korada and Kumar were left in their dust, both over five seconds behind, and Swaminathan retired. Kumar’s championship lead was cut to 12 points, and it remained a four-way fight.

Swaminathan was the man to beat on the final day of the season, winning both races. He triumphed in race two by 0.571s over Singh, who was now Kumar’s sole title rival, as Pariat made the podium again in third.

Pariat pushed Swaminathan hard in the title decider, the pair split by 0.27s at the finish, and a distant third place for Singh meant Kumar became champion by three points.

The calendar expanded to four rounds for 2024, all at Chennai, with two events in February followed by a five-month break before a return to action in July. There was then gap of a month before the August finale.

Only three F2000 drivers attended the season opener, and Pariat kicked off his campaign with pole. He was set to win race one before engine issues struck and he lost the lead on the last lap to reigning MRF F1600 champion Chetan Surineni.

He bounced back to dominate the next two races, winning them by 17.989s and 14.366s respectively, with Surineni second both times. Tarun Muthiaiah was disqualified from race two, and a very distant third – and also last – in race three.

2024 MRF F2000

Pariat went unbeaten in round two, taking pole and then victory and fastest lap in all three races. After lights-to-flag success in race one, he overtook his only two rivals to win the reversed-grid race two by 8.985s and led from the front again in race three to triumph by 12.762s.

The F2000 grid grew to five cars for round three, and Pariat once again took pole. His start to race one wasn’t the best, but he didn’t lose the lead and pulled away over the course of the opening lap. It was another utterly dominant drive, but the race ended with Pariat being disqualified and victory was handed to the debuting Akhil Agarwal who had got ahead of Surineni for second on-the-road with a few laps to go.

Pariat sought redemption in race two, which began with reversed-grid polesitter Shirya Lohia being slow off the line and Muthiaiah streaking into the lead. It was four-wide for second briefly and Pariat took the position, with Surineni third.

By the end of lap one there was already a big gap between Pariat in first and the rest of the field, with Surineni attacking Muthiaiah. Repeatedly going wide out of the last corner meant Surineni didn’t overtake Muthiaiah when he had the pace advantage in the race’s first half, but he took second on the final lap after Muthiaiah went off under pressure and stalling. He got going again, but finished fourth behind Agarwal.

Pariat won and had pole position again for race three. Surineni was almost able to get down the inside of him at turn one on the opening lap but has held off, and thereon it was like previous races as Pariat streaked away for victory. Agarwal tried to stick with Surineni but by mid-race had been gapped and finished a lonely third.

In the final round, Pariat was fastest in qualifying but lost the lead to sole title rival Surineni – who had a new car after issues with his original one – at the opening corner of race one. At turn two he was back ahead and soon untouchable. Muthiaiah was a very distant third, and on the last lap Agarwal dropped behind Lohia.

Surineni went from fourth to first at the start of race two, ahead of reversed-grid poleman Agarwal and a relaxed Pariat who was on old tyres. By the time Pariat got into second, Surineni had a gap and after several laps of managing it he then pulled away for his second win and just about stay in title contention.

After many laps of being on his gearbox, Lohia was able to pass Muthiaiah for fourth with three laps to go.

The only way Pariat could be denied the title in an incredibly humid finale was if he retired and Surineni won, but being points leader meant Pariat got to start on pole. Surineni squeezed to the inside of him at turn one and got ahead, and this time Pariat wasn’t able to stay alongside into turn two and had to slot in behind.

Pariat locked up a few times as he sat in Surineni’s dirty air through the first two laps before the saety car came out due to an F1600 spinner. Racing resumed with two laps to go, and the top two sprinted away while Lohia took third at turn one. Moments later red flags waved, and after a half-hour break the field was sent back on track for three laps of racing.

Lohia was put back to fourth, and she was gapped by the top three on the rolling start. While she worked on closing back in on Muthiaiah, Pariat was pushing to stay with Surineni and on the last lap had another lock-up and a grassy moment as he got right onto the leader’s gearbox. They got to the chequered flag a second apart, and Pariat was crowned champion.

“I mean most of the job was done on Friday [with pole and race one victory], it took a lot of pressure off my shoulders,” Pariat said as he signed autographs afterwards. “It was fun. I really enjoyed this last one.”

“Second in my debut season, who wouldn’t want that?” Surineni commented. “But still, I want to see more competition in this category, simply because it’s the fastest [junior single-seater] cars in India, it’s the best cars in India. I don’t really know why there’s not so many competitors in this category right now, but it was absolutely fantastic driving this car.”

An MRF Challenge-inspired series concluded its 2022-23 season this weekend, with Sai Sanjay crowned champion

Run from 2012 to 2020, the Asian series used two-litre cars that are comparable to Formula Renault in Europe. It attracted overseas talent due to taking place during the European winter, and 14 series alumni have reached single-seaters’ top level. India’s biggest motorsport names also cameoed in the series, including former Formula 1 driver Narain Karthikeyan and Asia Pacific Rally champion Gaurav Gill.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to the centrally-run series (operated and promoted by JA Motorsport on behalf of tyre manufacturer MRF) being cancelled for two seasons, although MRF Racing’s Formula 1600-spec support series did continue.

The ‘Formula 2000′ series, which is the highest level of junior single-seater racing in South Asia, returned last October as a new series with a four-round calendar based entirely at Chennai in India. Rounds two to four took take place in January 2023.

It was only publicly confirmed during the third round last weekend that MRF F2000 would actually be on the bill of four rounds of the Indian national car racing championships at the circuit rather than three and so the season would conclude a week later than many had previously expected.

Rishon Rajeev had started the season by taking pole by half a second over Sanjay, but it was the latter who won and took fastest lap in the first race of the series’ return.

Rajeev made an awful start from pole, falling down the order while Sanjay went straight into the lead and had to resist pressure from reigning MRF F1600 champion Shahan Ali Mohsin. Kyle Kumaran had to start from the pits, while Chirag Ghorpade spun on lap one.

Sanjay escaped Ali Moshin’s clutches by the race’s halfway point, while Rajeev stayed close to third-placed Yash Aradhya to the finish.

2022-23 MRF F2000

The first Formula Regional Indian Championship season and inaugural Indian Formula 4 campaign have been called off, but the country’s two other major single-seater series are back in action over winter.

Formula Scout first reported on plans for FRIC and Indian F4, both fronted by Indian sportscar racer Aditya Patel, early in 2021 and the official announcement of their conception came in August that year.

A street demo also took place that month in Hyderabad, where the two series planned to hold multiple rounds on a new street circuit, and Prema was contracted to run all of the cars. Racing was supposed to kick off in February 2022, but in January it was announced the series would be pushed back to a November start date.

A fortnight before the season opener Formula Scout learned that the 2022 seasons would be called off, and it is understood that outcome became likely at the start of August.

Contrary to what has been reported elsewhere, the series’ order of FRegional cars from Tatuus had reached India. However the organisers were still waiting on their delivery of F4 cars from the manufacturer. Based on talks with interested drivers from home and abroad, they believed at least 10 entries in both series was possible.

Patel previously launched the X1 Racing League, which has evolved into the city franchise-based Indian Racing League and which FRIC and Indian F4 was supposed to support. The calendar for the series, which uses Aprilia-powered Wolf GB08 cars, has now dropped the opening round at Buddh that was supposed to take place next weekend is now a four-round series.

After a break of two-and-three-quarter years, the top category of the MRF Challenge has also returned. The India and Middle East-based series ran from 2012 to ’20 before the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, and attracted lots of international talent.

It was relaunched this October at Chennai, and will race there several times next January to complete its 2022-23 season.

The first race on Sunday of the season finale was a reversed grid encounter, with Yuven Sundaramoorthy starting on pole ahead of Manaf Hijjawi.

Despite the best efforts of others they remained in those positions until the chequered flag, with Sundaramoorthy taking his second win of the season by 0.991 seconds.

Dylan Young just held off title rival Joshua Mason for third, with both cutting into the lead of sixth placed finished Amendola.

Sundaramoorthy started at the front again in the next race, but a stunning start and overtake from Louis Foster took him into the lead within the first two corners.

Further back there was a mass interlocking of wheels, causing Hijjawi and Mason to retire on the spot. Largim Ali was able to continue as the race was interrupted by the removal of the two retired cars, and Foster then pulled away from Sundaramoorthy to take victory in his first weekend in the championship.

Amendola rounded out the podium in a lonely third place, enough to crown the former Formula Ford 1600 racer as champion.

Mason went into the final race with the slimmest of chances of beating Young to second in the standings, but his plans were foiled by the Australian starting from pole and then controlling the race from the front.

Valdemar Eriksen took his best result of the season in second place, with Amendola adding another podium to his tally in third.

Michelangelo Amendola added two more wins to his season tally at Chennai to close in on the MRF Challenge title.

The Belgian comfortably took a double pole in qualifying, and had a “boring race” as he took a dominant 7.705 second win in race one.

His closest rivals on pace, Manaf Hijjawi and Dylan Young, clashed on the run to the first corner of the race and the opposition from Joshua Mason only lasted a lap before he was passed around the outside of the same corner by Young the next time around.

Mason briefly tried fighting back but had to settle for second behind Young, who was nursing tracking issues from his early clash with Hijjawi.

British Formula 4 graudate Louis Foster finished fourth on his debut, ahead of Valdemar Eriksen and the recovering Hijjawi.

Sixth place meant Hijjawi got to start the reversed grid race two from pole, but he was under immediate pressure from Mason from fourth on the grid.

Once again Mason struggled in the dirty air and he dropped back in the first third of the race. A burst of speed meant he was suddenly back on the Jordanian’s gearbox on lap six of 15, and he even looked at attempting an overtake on a few occasions.

Hijjawi admitted to actually slowing down his pace once Mason was on his tail, to make overtaking more difficult around the narrow Indian circuit, and held on for his first car racing win.

Valdemar Eriksen finished a lonely third ahead of Young and the very messy Amendola. Largim Ali, Yuven Sundaramoorthy and Reece Ushijima battled hard over sixth but finished far behind.

In last place, and two laps down, was Foster. The Briton had problems that required him to pit twice, but he used his time on track well to set fastest lap and put him provisionally on pole for the fifth race of the weekend.

Amendola dominated from pole again in race three, initially having his mirrors full of Mason before his title rival spun at Turn 3 in the second half of the race. This promoted Young to second, who spent the whole race fending off Foster.

Mason dropped to fourth but minimised further damage with some strong defending immediately after his spin, which left the order of the cars behind as Hijjawi, Sundaramoorthy and Ali.

The 16-year-old stepped up to single-seaters last year after a season-and-a-half racing in Ginetta Junior, where he finished second in the 2018 standings.

His open-wheel debut came in British F4 with Double R Racing, and he won six races in a title challenge that eventually resulted in third in the standings and a coveted spot in the Porsche GB Junior Shootout.

He will remain with the team in 2020 as he steps up to BRDC British Formula 3, being reunited with F4 rival and team-mate Sebastian Alvarez.

Also racing in British F3 this year is Lanan Racing’s Joshua Mason, who is firmly in contention for the MRF Challenge title.

Belgian driver Michelangelo Amendola currently leads the points with three wins, ahead of series veteran Dylan Young and Mason.

FIA F3 Championship-experienced racers David Schumacher and Bent Viscaal, who dominated the second round of the season in Bahrain, will not be racing in the Chennai finale.

The addition of Foster will leave a likely grid of 10 cars, and with six races taking place on the Indian circuit he could claim the title if serious misfortune were to strike his rivals on track.

India’s Formula BMW-based X1 Racing League has used Chennai for its inaugural season over the European winter. The series pitted ex-Formula 1 racers and other professional drivers against rising talents in a franchise-based competition.

Unfortunately it was riddled by many car and organisational problems, leading to a two weekend series and plans for a replacement car for the second season.

Bent Viscaal, who like Schumacher was using his Bahrain trip as track experience ahead of FIA Formula 3 Championship’s visit next year, won the first of Sunday’s first two races.

The Dutchman moved past poleman Schumacher off the line and was then never threatened, and even after backing off on the final lap he was still 0.765 seconds in the clear.

Schumacher’s second place was also all but assured after lap one, as Yuven Sundaramoorthy couldn’t match his pace and finished a very distant third place. Jordanian karting champion Manaf Hijjawi finished fourth.

Due to sharing a bill with the World Endurance Championship’s Bahrain 8 Hours, there was only time for four MRF races during the weekend rather than five, and the last one was won by series veteran Dylan Young.

The Australian started from second on the reversed grid behind championship leader Michelangelo Amendola, who ended the first lap down in eighth place.

Race three winner Viscaal didn’t even complete the lap, while Joshua Mason and Hijjawi rose into the podium positions behind Young.

Mason failed to challenge while in second, and Hijjawi did a bit better after passing the BRDC British F3 race-winner but still couldn’t prevent Young from winning.

A poor start by Schumacher led to a recovery drive to third, with Mason dropping way back once he was demoted to fourth.

Young is now Amendola’s closest title rival, 16 points behind, with all 11 drivers still in contention going into February’s Chennai season finale.

The German beat FIA Formula 3 Championship rival Bent Viscaal, also making his debut, to pole for the opening race.

Schumacher dropped to third on the opening lap, with Viscaal taking the lead ahead of Valdemar Eriksen, from sixth on the grid.

It took until lap six of nine before Schumacher was able to find a way past Eriksen for second, by which point Viscaal had assured himself of victory. Danish Formula 4 graduate Eriksen completed the podium.

Championship leader Michelangelo Amendola struggled in qualifying, and only improved to seventh in the race.

Single-seater rookie Reece Ushijima started on pole for the reversed grid race, but was quickly passed by Dylan Young.

The Australian looked set for his second MRF win, despite having Viscaal on his tail, until a stunning last lap enabled Schumacher to get past both.

Viscaal also managed to get through to take second place from Young, who was almost passed by Joshua Mason on the last lap.

Schumacher raced primarily in Formula Regional European Championship this year, winning four races for the US Racing team co-run by his father Ralf and finishing fourth in the standings.

The 18-year-old stepped up to FIA F3 for the Sochi season finale, taking a best finish of 20th with Campos Racing.

He switched to Sauber Junior Team by Charouz for the Macau Grand Prix, which used the same Dallara F3 2019 cars, and finished in 21st place.

It is the second time a Schumacher has raced in the MRF Challenge, with David’s cousin Mick contesting two seasons and winning four races.

Viscaal, runner-up in Euroformula Open in 2018 and the North European Zone and Spanish Formula 4 championships the year before that, raced with HWA Racelab for the duration of the inaugural FIA F3 season.

His best finish was a fifth, achieved in the third race of the season, but did not score points in any other races.

He is also believed to have completed some simulator work for HWA’s Formula E programme.

Neither driver is confirmed to attend the third and final MRF Challenge round at India’s Chennai circuit next February.

The addition of the pair in Bahrain brings the grid size up to 11, with Belgian racer Michelangelo Amendola the leading driver from the nine cars that attended the opening round at Dubai Autodrome after winning three of the five races held.

The Australian, who has been a regular in the series since 2012, won the third race of the season opener and the first race of Saturday by just 0.683 seconds over championship leader Michelangelo Amendola.

BRDC British Formula 3 race-winner Joshua Mason had a similarly close battle to beat karting graduate Manaf Hijjawi and USF2000’s Yuven Sundaramoorthy to third, with 0.712s covering the trio.

After dissapointment in the first two races of the weekend, Sundaramoorthy rose to the top in race four to take his first win in winged single-seaters.

Amendola was second, this time 3.429s behind, with Danish Formula 4 graduate Valdemar Eriksen completing the podium.

His home country rival Largim Ali failed to start races four and five, meaning only eight cars took part.

Reece Ushijima, in only his second weekend in single-seaters, took fastest lap in seventh place.

Amendola made it three wins out of five in the final race, once again doing so under pressure from Mason, with Ushijima taking fastest lap again.
