Noda Racing withdrew from last weekend’s Euroformula round at the Red Bull Ring following a rule change that disadvantaged the team.

Until the the team had competee with a lighter car than rivals, benefiting from a rule that set a lower minimum combined weight of car and driver for entries driven by women.

That helped the team’s driver Juju Noda become more competitive, and she claimed her first win at Paul Ricard in July. Given she had now proven to be competitive, series promoter GT Sport opted to rescind the weight rule for the next round (with it likely only being scaled back rather than removed entirely had she not won). After finding out, Noda Racing withdrew.

“It’s a long story. People say quite a few things about regulation change but it’s not just that,” team principal Hideki Noda told Formula Scout.

“We can challenge the regulation change but what we are told to do is not just a ballast thing. If it’s a ballast thing we can put ballast but we have to develop the car with the ballast. It’s not easy just to put in ballast, you have to set up the car to adjust for this weight, so you need to spend time for testing.

“But we tested with the circumstances we were given. We tested last week and two weeks ago with what we are supposed to run.”

After Noda informed GT Sport of his intention to withdraw, GT Sport then spent several hours on the phone trying to convince him not to. Choosing not to race would only prove critics’ points about the weight advantage.

But on both sides the situation was about more than the weight. In addition to plenty of in-season testing, Noda Racing was also racing their Dallara 320 in the Austrian Formula 3 Cup and F2000 Italian Trophy, the latter who “are helping us a lot”.

In fact, after withdrawing from the Red Bull Ring, Noda entered daugher Juju into Austrian F3 at Brno and she took pole and two wins as well as demoing a Formula Renault 3.5 car.

Motopark’s Jakob Bergmeister moved into Euroformula’ rookie trophy lead in Noda’s absence, meaning her title ambitions lie firmly in the two series (primarily) for old F3 cars.

“Juju is competing in Zinox also and she is leading the championship and also here the Drexler Cup,” Noda Sr said at Brno.

“We made this entry before we do the Euroformula and this was the deal and they accepted it. But now they are telling us this is not the right thing to do because only Juju gets more track time.

“So to be equal to other driver, to carry on with Zinox [Italy] and Drexler [Austria] is not a nice thing to do, they [EFO] say. But I cannot stop racing in Zinox. These guys are helping us a lot and are very nice people, Juju is leading the championship in Zinox and I cannot stop this in the middle of the season.

“It is not just the ballast thing, its all the political things like this, so I don’t know what to do for the future.”

Noda Racing got permission to use different wheel rims in Euroformula to their opposition, which GT Sport told Formula Scout remains the case. The series’ teams also do not get on great with each other, but that was not instigated by Noda’s arrival.

“I wish they would announce everything that they told us but they only announced the ballast thing,” said Noda.

“Each time you get faster, they changed the regulation in Paul Ricard, the reason was that Juju was very fast at Hungaroring and she almost won the race.

“We went to Paul Ricard and she won the race and then okay if they want to change the regulation because she won the race in Paul Ricard, they could make this decision much earlier. We had more than one month off between Paul Ricard and Red Bull Ring. But only they come back to us this Monday.

“I told them ‘look, we had a conversation in Paul Ricard and they told us no more change in regulation during the season’, and then they came this Monday…”

Noda has not ruled out racing in Euroformula again this year, as he is currently undecided on if he should return to the series.

Euroformula has dropped its controversial ‘Noda rule’, which enabled female drivers to run in lighter cars than male rivals.

The technical regulations for the 2023 season were published on February 20, and stated “the minimum weight of the car with the driver aboard, wearing his complete racing apparel and safety equipment, must not be less than 580 kilograms”.

Noda’s arrival in Euroformula with her family-run Noda Racing team was announced on April 5, and on the morning of the season’s start at Algarve on April 28 the championship’s technical commission signed off a decision “to fix the minimum weight at 560kg, for women drivers”.

There was another technical tweak on the evening of May 26, after practice for round two at Spa-Francorchamps had taken place, “to fix the minimum weight defined in article six of technical regulations of Euroformula Open at 586kg”. At this point teams were already complaining about the advantage Noda appeared to be given by the regulations.

That unhappiness continued into round three at the Hungaroring, which the technical commission addressed following practice for round four at Paul Ricard by saying they were “to fix a correction of (-15 kg) over the minimum weight… for women drivers”.

Noda – who is the series’ only female driver – took her first win the next day, bringing further scrutiny to the regulations, but no further action was taken as series staff then headed on a summer break.

However in a document issued to all competitors and dated August 31, the championship’s technical delegate stated that from this weekend’s Red Bull Ring round onwards that they would “fix the minimum weight defined in article six of technical regulations of Euroformula Open at 586kg for all the drivers” and therefore making redundant the previous technical decisions that had enabled different minimum weights based on the gender of drivers.

Juju Noda’s maiden Euroformula victory at Paul Ricard was a special moment for both her and Noda Racing’s team owner-cum-proud father Hideki.

The former Formula 1 racer runs his 17-year-old daughter in his own team, which is a small one-car operation.

A collision between leaders Noel Leon and Francesco Simonazzi in race one of the weekend promoted Noda to third. She was quick to react, passing Cian Shields for the lead before the safety car was deployed. When racing resumed she managed the gap to her pursuers from Motopark and its satellite CryptoTower squad to become Euroformula’s first female winner.

Immediately after the podium ceremony, a still emotional and exhausted Noda told Formula Scout: “I can’t believe it. I’m speechless but I am really, really happy.”

“I really appreciate my team, my family, my sponsors, my fans – without them I am not here.”

She admitted to being surprised to suddenly find herself out front – “at the time, I felt ‘am I really leading this race?’”.

“My pace was very fast [and] I thought I will win the race during the race. But before this weekend I didn’t expect this result,” she commented, while her father admitted to being far less relaxed during the race.

“To be honest, I was very nervous,” he laughed. “I never felt a race that was so long.”

For the older Noda, seeing his daughter lead a phalanx of red Motopark cars across the line was an important milestone in the team’s development.

“With our limited preparation and limited budget, I thought we would never be able to win against Motopark,” he told Formula Scout.

“Motopark is a giant team and they have a lot of experience and I really think that they are one of the best teams in Europe.

“With a family team, [I asked myself], ‘how can I achieve this result?’, But we did it. It’s all down to Juju, she drove superb race today and she made no mistakes. I’m really proud of her.”

Noda’s victory may have been her first in Euroformula, but she has already won three times this year in the Austrian Formula 3 Cup, winning once at Mugello and twice at Spa-Francorchamps, in the same Dallara 320 chassis.

Naturally, her proud father, himself a winner in third-tier single-seaters in British F3 in 1991, is not unbiased. But what does he think his daughter can achieve in motorsport?

“Of course, she [would] like to go on to a higher level,” he says. “I don’t know. In the future, probably people start to expect [her to] try to be a Formula 1 driver but you never know.

“We just try to do the best we can. To be a F1 driver it’s not just speed, it’s many things. But if we give up, it [will] never happen. We try to break through.

“It would be nice if she drives in F1. It’s a long time since a woman drove in F1. Why not, if we don’t try?”

Juju Noda and Noda Racing picked up their first Euroformula win at Paul Ricard after a clash eliminated the early leaders.

Motopak’s Noel Leon claimed pole, but was overtaken by BVM Racing’s Francesco Simonazzi on the way to turn one as third-placed qualifier Bryce Aron stalled on the grid and avoided being hit by those behind.

The debuting Vladislav Ryabov, driving for Motopark’s satellite team CryptoTower Racing Team, got into third place while Noda ran fourth ahead of Cian Shields and Jakob Bergmeister.

Leon tried reclaiming the lead at the inside of turn one on lap two but could not do it, while Shields moved past Noda and then Ryabov on lap three.

There was change at the front on lap four as Leon successfully went down the inside of Simonazzi at turn one, but a few corners later he then collided with his rival and both drivers had to retire.

Yellow flags did not come out immediately and Noda was quick to react as she passed everyone ahead of her to get into the lead before the safety car was called out.

Racing resumed on lap eight, with the duration of the race shortened from 15 to 13 laps. Bergmeister passed Ryabov for second around the outside of turn one on the restart, and Aron tried passing Ryabov later in the lap but the Russian got defensive. That proved ineffective, as it enabled Aron and Shields to get past.

Shields cleared Aron too, but there was then a big gap to make up to the top two who traded the fastest lap through the rest of the race. It ultimately went Noda’s way, and she won by 2.26 seconds.

Aron had another dice with Ryabov before chasing Shields, and passed him on the final lap to finish third.

“I’m speechless. I can’t believe it,” said Noda after taking victory, which marked the first time a woman has won in the history of Spanish Formula 3/Euroformula. “Really happy.”

“Tough weekend for me, and Motopark is very fast. So actually i didn’t prepare this interview because [i didn’t think I’d be beating them].”

Danish Formula 4 race-winner Juju Noda will race in Euroformula this year for her family’s Noda Racing team.

Led by her father Hideki, who in his career raced in Formula 1, IndyCar and Super Formula, Noda Racing has run Noda through much of her single-seater career.

She started off in Japan, and raced Formula 3 cars in her home country aged 13 in a competition called Formula U17.

Age restrictions meant she had to step down to F4 when she started racing abroad, with Danish F4 being her primary programme through 2020 and ’21. She won on her series debut and came sixth in the shortened three-round 2020 season, then was seventh the year after.

Noda was chosen to race in the Formula Regional-spec W Series in 2022, and scored once. During the year she also raced a FRegional car in the Austrian F3 Cup, which she has returned to for 2023 in the Dallara 320 car that Euroformula uses. The opening Austrian F3 Cup round was held at Mugello last month, and she made the podium.

Now Noda will campaign her car in Euroformula itself, having been evaluating the series over winter and also contesting pre-season testing, and Noda Racing will operate from a base in Italy.

“This decision is a huge challenge and a big step in my career, I am looking forward to it,” said Noda. “I know I will learn and improve so much by competing against superfast and experienced drivers. I just want to do my best, improve and have fun.

She added: “This year, I really feel things are going in the right direction.”

Her father commented: “Juju will be up against a top-level team [Motopark] that enters six cars and has won three of the last four championships. A real challenge for a small, one-car team can like us, but Juju has already shown us in the past how she can go above and beyond and achieve the impossible.”

The Euroformula grid is now up to six cars. Motopark has three drivers, while BVM Racing and Effective Racing are – like Noda Racing – competing as one-car teams.

Jesús Pareja, CEO of  Euroformula organiser and promoter GT Sport, added:

“Having Juju in the Euroformula is a great opportunity for us and for her as well.

“Juju is a real challenger, a young woman from Japan with great potential. We are very happy to welcome her to our series, it means a lot to us as well as to her, and we will be rooting for Juju to succeed. ”

BVM Racing’s Francesco Simonazzi warmed up for his Euroformula campaign with two wins in the Austrian Formula 3 Cup and F2000 Italian Trophy’s joint opening round at Mugello.

Simonazzi topped qualifying by 1.059 seconds, but due to his experience was a guest driver and so second-fastest driver Juju Noda was officially awarded pole ahead of Paolo Brajnik.

The trio were among seven drivers in the Dallara 320 cars used in Euroformula, although Simonazzi is the only one confirmed to race there.

Noda’s father Hideki, who runs the Noda Racing team Juju drives for, has talked with Euroformula organiser GT Sport, indicated interest in racing there and entered pre-season testing, but is undecided on joining. Euroformula remains a consideration “depending on the results” in Italy.

Last year Noda raced a FRegional car in the centrally-run W Series and part-time in the Austrian F3 Cup, and for 2023 will do the seven-round F2000 Italian Trophy season and the Austrian F3 Cup’s Hockenheim round.

Brajnik failed to start race one at Mugello, with his grid spot left empty, so Marco Falci was in third when the cars lined up to race.

Simonazzi made a great start and sprinted away, while Noda bogged down. She dropped to fourth, lost another place at turn one, then was passed by Alessandro Bracalente later around the lap to end it in seventh place.

A gap of 2.269s had already been opened up between Simonazzi and second-placed Benjamin Berta by lap three, while Noda applied pressure to Bracalente but could not find a way past.

She finally gained a place on lap eight when Francesco Galli spun out of third, potentially after some light contact from Falci as they lapped cars from the lower classes, but there were no further gains as the safety car then appeared.

Simonazzi’s huge lead was reduced to nothing and he sat behind the safety car until the end of lap 12 as Edoardo Bonanomi came to a stop on track after Galli’s car had been retrieved.

The safety car returned to the pits after the race clock hit zero, with the ‘plus one lap’ board being shown as drivers reached the start/finish line. In the one lap of green flag action, Simonazzi pulled away again and Noda passed Bracalente for fifth. Falci held on to third by 0.011s ahead of Sandro Zeller.

Noda made a far better start to race two, keeping second place but having no answer to poleman Simonazzi. He was 3.923s ahead after three laps, with the gap then stabilising until lap seven when Noda closed in by 1.988s. The gap decreased by another 1.583s on the lap after as Simonazzi tackled lapped traffic.

Noda was just 0.121s behind when Simonazzi was handed a three-second penalty for track limits abuse, after which he started to pull away and managed to create enough of a lead to negate his penalty and win.

Falci spent many laps being attacked by Bracalente for third until the race’s second half when they came across lapped traffic. Bernardo Pellegrini profited from Bracalente’s struggles in traffic to pass him for fourth, then the latter had a crash with Savatore Marinaro that earned him a 10s penalty and dropped him from fifth to eighth.

Juju Noda was fastest in the latest Kateyama-organised single-seater test at Misano, as she continues running in a Euroformula car.

The former W Series racer has tested multiple times this year in a Dallara 320 which her father Hideki’s Noda Racing team has bought. Last year the team ran Noda in a Formula Regional car in various series alongside her W Series campaign.

There were two other Euroformula cars at the Misano test, which took place over Wednesday and Thursday this week.

It was Paolo Brajnik who set the pace on Wednesday morning, setting a 1m29.120s lap to go 0.305 seconds faster than Noda, who completed more laps than anyone else. G Motorsport’s Francesco Galli was 2.052s off the pace in the third of the Euroformula cars, and BVM Racing’s Alfio Spina was the top Formula 4 driver in fourth place with a 1m36.552s lap.

Spina was in one of the second-generation Tatuus cars, and his closest rival Romain Andriolo – who was 0.776s slower – was in one of the second-generation Mygale chassis used in the French F4 championship.

Next up on the timesheet were Edgar Pierre, run by Alpine junior Victor Martins’ Victory Lane team, and Enzo Richer in a Formula Regional car.

Noda lowered the pace to 1m28.761s in the afternoon, heading Brajnik by 0.111s, and Spina led AKM Motorport’s Davide Larini in the F4 classification.

The next day began with Noda going even faster, setting a 1m28.324s to head Galli by 0.982s. This time Winfield Racing School’s Andriolo outpaced Spina to be the fastest F4 driver, and Richer switched to a Mygale F4 car.

BVM’s Andrea Frassinetti was absent, and Ukrainian racer Yaroslav Veselaho joined the action as he prepares for his rookie Fench F4 season.

Galli was on top in the final session, and was the only Euroformula car on track, with Andriolo second fastest overall.

There were four first-generation F4 cars in the test. Three of them were Tatuus chassis, while Karel Schulz drove one of the Mygale cars previously used in British F4.

Juju Noda has ramped up her private test programme ahead of her W Series debut, and she will enter at least one Austrian Formula 3 Cup round as extra learning too.

The 16-year-old daughter of former Formula 1 racer Hideki Noda has raced in Danish Formula 4 for the past two years, in addition to smaller series in the United States and an aborted move into the country’s national F4 championship.

In Denmark she was run by her father’s Noda Racing team, and since that programme concluded last October it has run its own Tatuus T-318 car – the same Formula Regional-spec car W Series uses – for the Japanese teen in tests across Europe.

She began testing at Denmark’s Padborg Park circuit, then also visited Germany (Oschersleben), Belgium (Spa-Francorchamps), Austria (Red Bull Ring) and Italy. While in Denmark she also conducted touring car testing.

Over winter the T-318 was put up for sale, after it was believed to have been crashed, but there were no buyers and the test programme restarted at the start of 2022.

Noda has tested at Misano, Mugello, Paul Ricard and one circuit away from continental Europe. Her two appearances in Italy were spent sharing the track with Formula 4 cars and being matched for pace at Mugello and outpaced at Misano.

She also got called up to contest W Series’ pre-season Barcelona test, going 2.184 seconds off the fastest driver but off the back of her performance earning a place on the 2022 (and ’23) grid.

Noda has driven at Barcelona since, but this time in a Formula Regional European Championship test where she was run by the new Race Performance Motorsport team.

When RPM’s interest in a FREC entry first came to Formula Scout’s attention last Autumn, the team’s line-up was touted as consisting of 2017 Formula Ford Festival runner-up (and RPM leader) Keith Donegan, FRegional Americas race-winner James Roe Jr and Noda. However paddock rumours also persisted that Noda was already W Series-bound for this year.

RPM has two vacant seats in its FREC line-up, with Donegan and Noda tipped to fill them at least on a part-time basis.

Noda is now confirmed to race in a different series though, as she will participate in the second round of the Austrian F3 Cup at Monza on April 22-24. She will race in the series’ F3 Open class in her usual T-318 run by Noda Racing.

The series, which has never attracted a FRegional car since the category’s creation in 2018, is at Monza on the same weekend that FREC is there for its season opener. Noda Sr told Formula Scout that after the W Series season opener in Miami on May 7-8, a decision would be made on which further Austrian F3 Cup rounds to contest.

The only rounds that do not clash with W Series are at the Red Bull Ring (June 4/5), Spa (June 25/26) and Brno (September 10/11).

Last year the series was used by ADAC F4 racers to warm up for their primary programme.

Ferrari junior Maya Weug was fastest in this week’s two-day Italian Formula 4 test at Mugello, driving for the Iron Lynx team she raced for last year.

Weug is one of its Iron Dames drivers, but had been tipped to move to Prema, which provides technical support to and shares its ownership with Iron Lynx, for her second F4 season. It is yet to be announced who she will race for.

The test began on Monday with Danish F4 star Noah Stromsted setting the pace for R-ace GP. He was 0.290 seconds faster than Van Amersfoort Racing’s Nikita Bedrin. While all drivers were listed as driving the first-generation Tatuus F4 car, that was only the case for Iron Lynx’s Niko Lacorte, Cram Motorsport’s Valentin Kluss, AS Motorsport’s drivers and BWR Motorsports’ Chris Rosenkranz.

Stromsted was fastest again in session two, improving to 1m48.380s to head Valerio Rinicella by 0.273s. The Italian is set to race for MP Motorsport in Spanish F4, and drove with AKM Motorsport for the day. Sauber junior Zachary David also tested with AKM.

Stromsted’s test team-mates Frederik Lund and Kacper Sztuka were the only two drivers not to improve, with both setting just a handful of laps.

Jenzer Motorsport’s Samir Ben pipped Stromsted to top spot in the first afternoon session by 0.047s, with Weug 0.089s back in third. At this point Noda Racing’s Juju Noda joined in with a Formula Regional car, and was two seconds slower than Ben despite setting 24 laps.

Stromsted returned to top spot in the final session, his new 1m48.086s benchmark putting him 0.167s clear of Bedrin and 0.191s ahead of VAR’s Martinius Stenshorne. Noda was slower than F4 cars once again.

Bedrin broke into the 1m47s and headed Stenshorne by 0.166s at the start of Tuesday’s running, with Stromsted 1.3s back in third and Noda way off the pace. She finally moved ahead of them in the next session, going a second faster than Kluss.

Weug matched Noda’s laptime in the afternoon to top the F4 table, 1.097s ahead of Kluss in session three and 0.415s faster than Stenshorne in session four. Propping up the order were two Formula X Italian Series drivers.

Valentin Kluss drove a first-generation Tatuus Formula 4 car to the fastest lap in a test at Misano this week.

Most drivers were out in the new Tatuus T-421, with three drivers using the older T-014 car. Cram Motorsport ran Kluss, Jenzer Motorsport fielded Formula Nordic champion William Karlsson in a Gen1 for one day before he drove its Gen2 car on day two and BWR Motorsports ran German karting graduate Chris Rosenkranz.

There were three non-F4 cars, as Paolo Brajnick and Alessandro Rosi turned up in Euroformula-spec Dallara 320s while Noda Racing ran Juju Noda in a Tatuus T-318. It was the same Formula Regional chassis she spent 2021 testing in and was unsuccessfully put to market. Noda recently drove an identical car in W Series testing and is in contention to race there.

Samir Ben, occupier of Jenzer’s Gen2 car at first, set the pace early on in Wednesday morning’s session where a red flag interrupted running. Arias Deukmedjian then took over at the top for Van Amersfoort Racing after, with team-mate Martinius Stenshorne going faster by a quarter of a second an hour later.

Ben got back into second place in the final hour, with the morning ending with Stenshorne ahead of R-ace GP’s Noah Stromsted. Between the pair was his 2021 Danish F4 rival Noda, 0.176s slower than an F4 car.

The pace was again set by Ben at the start of the afternoon until Kluss went top with three hours to go. He was usurped by AKM Motorsport’s Pedro Clerot, who along with fellow AKM tester Aurelia Nobels is bound for the new Brazilian F4 series.

A red flag stoppage also occurred in the afternoon, and after that Stenshorne set a 1m35.892s that was 0.001s faster than previous pacesetter Kluss. With just over half an hour remaining he improved by 0.079s, then in the final 16 minutes there was a flurry of track action. Stenshorne improved again to 1m35.396s, but team-mate Brando Badoer went faster by 0.032s.

Clerot swapped cars with Isaac Barashi at AKM for Thursday, as Kluss kicked things off by establishing a new benchmark pace. He got down to 1m34.459s, 0.791s up on VAR’s Emmo Fittipaldi.

Stenshorne was able to break into the 1m34s too in the afternoon, but 0.532s slower than Kluss in a car eight years newer. Iron Lynx’s Niko Lacorte rose to third.

Kim Hwarang, a Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing junior in karting last year while also testing with Jenzer, was eighth fastest in the test for BVM Racing and has signed with the team to race in Italian F4.
