The Formula Regional European Championship and Italian Formula 4 held a collective post-season test at Mugello this week.

On Tuesday they shared the track for two sessions, then had four sessions each on Wednesday. F4 drivers were alone on Thursday, which had a morning and afternoon session.

Maximilian Popov was fastest on day one. In session one he set a 1m42.550s to lead R-ace GP’s Rashid Al Dhaheri by 0.285 seconds and Trident team-mate Andrija Kostic by 0.306s. There were eight drivers on track, and Tatuus was also testing its new-for-2026 second-generation FRegional car.

Popov improved slightly to 1m42.501s in the afternoon, with Al Dhaheri 0.187s behind and Race Performance Motorsport’s drivers also within half a second of him.

The pace was lowered to 1m41.291s by Popov the next morning, putting him 0.386s ahead of the driver of R-P-M’s #74 car as everyone improved. A 1m41.633s put the driver of R-P-M’s #210 on top by just 0.01s over their team-mate in session four, with Al Dhaheri and Popov 0.163s and 0.174s behind.

Laptimes were a lot slower in session five, with R-P-M’s #74 driver by 0.099s ahead of Popov at the top, as in session six where Kostic posted a 1m42.144s to sit 0.187s ahead of Popov.

In F4, the driver of AKM’s #55 had set the pace on Tuesday morning with a 1m51.018s, leading Cram Motorsport’s Rafael Vaessen by 0.106s, then Vaessen set a 1m50.914s in the afternoon to move ahead of them by 0.16s.

The F4 entry list grew from four cars to 31 on Wednesday, and the driver of Jenzer Motorsport’s #21 car set a 1m50.360s early in the day. Closest to him was Prema’s Niccolo Maccagnani, who recently did private Formula 2 testing at Monza, 0.975s off the pace.

Maccagnani improved to 1m49.427s in session four, pipping team-mate Alp Hasan Aksoy by 0.009s while US Racing’s Ludovico Busso was 0.544s back in third as a second split the top seven.

In session five, Maccagnani lowered the pace further to 1m49.302s, leading Jenzer’s #21 driver by 0.156s, the driver of US’s #998 car by 0.373s and US’s Noah Killion by 0.412s. The top 10 were covered by a second, and all but seven drivers set personal bests.

Wednesday concluded with Busso topping session six. He set a 1m50.420s, and PHM Racing’s Iacopo Martinese and R-ace’s Emilty Cotty were his closest rivals. A second seperated first and 15th place as only two drivers improved.

It was grippy on Thursday morning, and 22 of the 26 drivers on track found gains with a close top 15 again. Killion posted a 1m49.158s that would go unbeaten, and he ended up fastest by 0.077s over Maccagnani and with a 0.329s gap to US’s Ary Bansal. Just 0.069s split he and three team-mates behind.

There were 11 improvers in the afternoon, and Jenzer’s #21 driver topped the timesheet with a 1m49.337s that put them third overall. They were 0.021s quicker than Bansal, with gaps of just 0.033s and 0.093s to Aksoy and Busso. A second covered the top 13.

While the Formula Regional European Championship’s 2026 calendar is not yet published, recent paddock gossip has revealed what changes are expected.

Delays in formalising the agreement between FREC promoter ACI Sport and the FIA to collaborate on organising the championship going forward has subsequently prolonged negotiations with circuits but teams have already received an eight-round draft calendar.

That would end a five-year run of 10-round seasons, and Formula Scout understands nations are now limited to two rounds per year. ACI operates from Italy, which has appeared at least three times on the calendar in all previous seasons.

The draft calendar retains Monza but drops Imola and Misano for Mugello, which had featured each year until 2025.

Hockenheim, Paul Ricard, the Red Bull Ring, Spa-Francorchamps and Zandvoort will be retained, and it is believed Barcelona will be off the calendar for the first time as FREC was unable to secure a suitable slot to race there.

The Hungaroring is likely to be absent as GB3 retains its position supporting Euroformula’s event there, while Germany could have two rounds as the Nurburgring is touted to join. It and Hockenheim’s round are expected to support the DTM.

In 2021, FREC planned to visit the Nurburgring but severe flooding in the Eifel region made the track unavailable and it was swapped out for Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit. It would therefore debut next year.

FREC has long sought a return to Formula 1’s support bill, having started its 2021 season with three rounds on its undercard and racing in Monaco again in 2022. Championship partner Renault then had to cede that support slot to FIA Formula 3.

While being in F1’s 2026 support paddock appears unattainable, FREC’s increased support from the FIA is likely to add pressure to achieve its ambition.

Despite a reduced calendar length, FREC will continue to have a 20-race season. Four rounds will feature a third race, which will be the first reversed-grid encounters in championship history.

The top 12 from the first qualifying session will be reversed to form the grid, with the aim of helping drivers adjust to the format used further up the ladder in FIA F3.

Formula Scout understands qualifying would likely be shifted to Friday afternoons, at least for the triple-headers.

A joint announcement by FREC and the FIA before this season’s penultimate round at Hockenheim named the 10 teams that will compete in 2026. That had one notable change from a draft list circulated to teams, as Michael Meadows’ Argenti Motorsport outfit had been set to join and replace G4 Racing.

Argenti competes primarily in karting and British Formula 4, and expanded into GB3 this year in partnership with Prema.

G4 has raced in FREC since 2021, won five races but endured a tough 2025 in which it scored one point. Team manager Adrian Munoz explained that they and rivals were surprised by their initial omission, and were informed of the changed decision days before the announcement. G4 then submitted its 2026 entry fees immediately.

Prema’s Sebastian Wheldon convincingly won E4’s third race at Mugello on Sunday morning.

He started behind R-ace GP’s Alex Powell and Prema team-mate Kean Nakamura Berta, and could only follow them slowly through the first two laps since damp areas of the track meant the safety car led the field.

Before green flags waved at the start of lap three, there was a three-car pile-up that eliminated Van Amersfoort Racing’s Payton Westcott.

Powell weaved his way to turn one once racing began, and Wheldon looked to the outside but Nakamura left him no room and he briefly went off exiting the corner.

Behind them were PHM Racing’s Reno Francot, Prema’s Salim Hanna Hernandez, VAR’s Dante Vinci and US Racing’s Gabriel Gomez.

Vinci defended the inside line into turn one on lap four but Gomez somehow found room on the inside. They went wheel-to-wheel and Gomez got ahead, completing his move at turn two where two of his wheels went beyond track limits.

Next to attack Vinci was team-mate Maximilian Popov, charging down his inside at turn one. They collided, Popov got ahead but Prema’s Andrea Dupe went past both.

Popov got back ahead of Dupe on lap six, while Vinci lost out to US’s Andrija Kostic. On lap nine he was on Dupe’s tail and spun him off at turn three. The safety car was summoned, putting all the other battles on pause.

Gomez had eyed up Hanna on lap seven, while Wheldon had attacked Nakamura briefly on lap eight. They were the drivers to watch on the lap 11 restart, which began with Powell weaving to turn one and then going deep to cover off Nakamura on his outside.

Wheldon behind had also picked the outside line, and was able to execute a switchback as Powell locked up after the apex. He was just ahead exiting the corner, and was fully in front after turn two. At turn five, Gomez swept past Hanna.

The gap at the front grew thereon, with Wheldon building a 2.6-second lead over Powell in the five remaining laps.

Nakamura was overtaken by Francot later on lap 11, and two late passes brought AKM Motorsport’s Tomass Stolcermanis up to ninth.

Alex Powell was victorious in E4’s second race at Mugello after on-the-road winner Kean Nakamura Berta was handed a post-race penalty.

The pair shared the front row of the grid, and ran wheel-to-wheel into turn one. R-ace GP’s Powell had nosed ahead upon turn-in but Prema’s poleman Nakamura locked up on the inside to be just ahead exiting turn one.

Nakamura then went outside of track limits at turn two but was able to stay ahead, only for stewards to decide post-race to punish him with five seconds added to his race time.

The gap between the top two ebbed and flowed between 0.3 and one second, with Nakamura weaving down the pit straight in defence on several laps, and they traded the fastest lap at times. The gap was 0.938s at the finish after 18 laps, but the gap they had to the rest of the field meant Nakamura still finished second.

PHM Racing’s Reno Francot held third at the start, and US Racing’s Gabriel Gomez went across the pit exit to get up from seventh to fourth ahead of Prema’s Salim Hanna Hernandez and Sebastian Wheldon.

Gomez initially had a gap, but by mid-race he was under attack. Hanna attacked him into the final corner on lap 10, then nailed a pass around the outside at turn one next time by. By lap 13 he was on Francot’s gearbox, and he tried passing on the outside at the first and last corners.

Francot weaved in defence on lap 14, and Hanna was sent beyond the white lines when he looked to the outside at turn one again. He held him off expertly there again on the last lap to finish a distant third.

On lap two Andrija Kostic (US) went to pass Maximilian Popov (Van Amersfoort Racing) into turn one and both cleared Kabir Anurag (US) who was on the outside. Kostic was also alongside Wheldon at the apex, but had a wobble and went into him. Wheldon went out of track limits and they both lost four spots as Popov locked up but stayed ahead of Anurag.

Later in the lap a position was reclaimed by Anurag, with both behind VAR’s Dante Vinci and ahead of Prema’s Newman Chi.

Vinci’s mirrors were filled thereon by two cars, and on lap five he weaved his way to turn one where he locked up. He did the same on lap 12, but two laps later there was an error and Anurag was able to get past and three seconds up the road.

Popov was alongside Vinci as they began lap 15, and Kostic was involved too by turn one. Vinci stayed ahead, but Kostic passed Popov at turn two. They later traded positions again, and Popov overtook Vinci before the final lap. But he then lost two places, only regaining one after Kostic was penalised five seconds post-race.

Kean Nakamura Berta won the first E4 race at Mugello to move level with Gabriel Gomez at the top of the standings.

There was a massive 34-car grid for the race, and on the formation lap AKM Motoesport’s Tomass Stolcermanis failed to get off the line and he was wheeled into the pits.

On the actual start, Prema’s poleman Nakamura had R-ace GP’s Alex Powell attacking him into the first braking zone. A few corners later the safety car was summoned due to R-ace’s Emily Cotty and AS Motorsport’s Mathilda Paatz colliding.

Racing resumed on lap five and Powell attacked Nakamura on the outside into San Donato again. The leader held on and built a gap over the course of the lap, as Maximilian Popov overtook Van Amersfoort Racing team-mate Dante Vinci for third.

Prema’s Salim Hanna Hernandez and US Racing’s Gomez had got into fifth and sixth on lap one, and behind them was the race’s main battle as PHM Racing’s Reno Francot attacked Prema’s Newman Chi for seventh.

They were particularly close on lap seven, with Francot attempting a diving move, and Chi began lap 12 weaving as he tried to break the tow. Francot went around his outside at turn one, which became the inside at turn two but a lock-up prevented him from successfully passing. He attacked at each of the next corners, then went around the outside of Chi at the high-speed Arrabbiata 1 and they collided. Both hurtles into the gravel and retirement.

Behind them, Prema’s Sebastian Wheldon had been attacking US’s Andrija Kostic for 11th consistently after the restart. On lap 10, Kostic then switched from defense to attack and almost got by Prema’s Sasha Bondarev at turn one. That failed attempt gave Wheldon more moentum and he got ahead mid-lap.

However they were side-by-side again as they began lap 11 and the inside line kept Wheldon ahead through turn one. US’s Kabir Anurag was now right behind them and he nailed an overtake on Kostic into turn two. He did not stay ahead for long as when Kostic got back alongside a few corners he left no room for Anurag who went through the gravel and fell down the order.

Nakamura took victory by just under a second, with Hanna taking fourth from Vinci as the final lap began due to Vinci locking up into the final corner on the penultimate tour.

VAR’s Alexander Ruta finished seventh, ahead of Bondarev, Wheldon and Kostic, who had to get back past R-ace’s debutant Andy Consani on the last lap.

Kean Nakamura Berta and Alex Powell will start from pole in this weekend’s E4 races at Mugello.

First place on the grid goes to Nakamura for races one and two after he topped both qualifying sessions, while Powell earned top spot in race three’s starting order by having the quickest second-best laptime of anyone across Q1 and Q2.

US Racing’s Andrija Kostic set the first flying lap in Q1, then AKM Motorsport’s Ginvera Panzeri went fastest by a massive 2.6 seconds. She was soon beaten by 1.2s as US’s Arjen Kraeling moved ahead, and the pace was lowered a further four times in the next minute.

Kostic returned to provisional pole, then team-mates Ludovico Busso and Gabriel Gomez were on top.

Powell set two new benchmarks, but on his second one he was only ahead for seven seconds before Nakamura came to the fore with an unbeatable 1m48.978s. No other driver lapped sub-1m49s.

Van Amersfoort Racing’s Dante Vinci and Maximilian Popov were third and fourth fastest, points leader Gomez was relegated to ninth and a second covered a top 15 completed by Busso. Kraling was only 29th fastest by the end of Q1.

Panzeri and her team-mates Abdullah Kamel and Evan Michelini were fastest at first in Q2, then US Racing’s lowered the pace to 1m50.191s. That effort was smashed by Powell, who set a 1m38.523s, but even that was not good enough for pole as Nakamura beat him by 0.099s later on.

PHM Racing’s Reno Francot and Prema’s Salim Hanna Hernandez were the only other drivers within 0.5s of pole, and Gomez qualified seventh. Stolcermanis ended up being the top AKM driver in 15th.

Only five drivers failed to improve on their second-best laptimes from Q1, with Popov and Stolcermanis being the highest placed of those overall by qualifying eighth and 11th for race three. Powell clinched pole by 0.115s over Nakamura, and 0.01s split Wheldon and Francot in third and fourth.

Several teams have revised their line-ups for the second round of the E4 season this weekend at Mugello.

AKM Motorsport has expanded to five cars with the addition of Javier Herrera and Tomass Stolcermanis.

Herrera has just concluded his Formula 4 Central European Zone campaign with Jenzer Motorsport, in which he came third in the standings with three wins. The rookie has also done two Italian F4 rounds and an Formula Winter Series event with Jenzer.

Stolcermanis has raced for Prema exclusively in his single-seater career, which started with a 2023 F4 South East Asia cameo. Last year he came 18th in F4 United Arab Emirates as a part-timer then fifth in E4 and ninth in Italian F4.

He began 2025 with his maiden car racing victory en route to fourth in the F4 Middle East standings, and despite missing three rounds sits 10th in Italian F4’s standings.

US Racing has grown from four to six cars, adding Ludovico Busso and Arjen Kraeling. Busso did round one with Viola Formula Racing and has been racing in Italian F4 with that team, while Kraeling has recently been racing in British F4.

R-ace GP has added a fifth driver to its line-up: Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 junior Andy Consani. The single-seater rookie is currently 11th in French F4, having claimed pole on debut but only one podium so far.

Returning to E4 is Cram Motorsport, which has done one round in each of the last two seasons. Its drivers are Italian karting graduate Oscar Repetto and its F4 regular Elia Weiss.

Despite being a car racing rookie, Weiss was called up to test in Formula E earlier this year. His racing experience so far consists of two FWinter Series rounds and five Italian F4 rounds, and he has scored no points.

Making its series debut is AS Motorsport, and is doing so with the all-female line-up of Aurelia Nobels and Mathilda Paatz.

Nobels came 12th in the all-female F1 Academy championship last year and sits 14th in the 2025 standings. Paatz came 20th in French F4 as a rookie in 2024 and was eighth in F4 CEZ this year.

Consani was first to the top in free practice one on Friday morning, and traded first place with team-mates Alex Powell, Alexander Savinkov and Emily Cotty.

Stolcermanis broke R-ace GP’s hold with a 1m52.527s, but Consani and then Powell lowered the pace. Prema’s Sebastian Wheldon was next to lead the way by breaking into the 1m51s, and Stolcermanis responded with a 1m50.864s.

That benchmark stood for 18 minutes before Prema’s Kean Nakamura Berta set an unbeatable 1m50.663s. PHM Racing’s Reno Francot ended FP1 third fastest, 0.282 seconds behind and 0.01s ahead of US’s Kabir Anurag, with Busso and Wheldon completing the top six. A second covered the top 22.

Anurag, team-mate Gabriel Gomez and Van Amersfoort Racing’s Maximilian Popov disputed first place in FP2 until Nakamura once again came to the fore. This time he set a 1m49.155s, putting him 0.324s ahead. Wheldon was 0.396s behind in third, with Powell and US’s Andrija Kostic the only others within 0.5s of him.

Points leader Gomez ended practice in 14th, 0.984s off the pace.

Junior single-seater teams from multiple categories were busy testing at Mugello this week, and it was Kean Nakamura Berta who set the Formula 4 pace.

While he was up against 32 drivers from other teams in Italian F4, absent from the entry list was R-ace GP’s fleet as the team instead ran two of its Formula Regional cars in the sessions for higher downforce machinery.

At the wheel of those were its F4 regular Emanuele Olivieri and Maximilian Popov, who competes for Van Amersfoort Racing in F4. Olivieri topped the times in the test’s 10-strong FRegional test contingent by 0.064 seconds after setting a 1m42.7s, with the driver of Trident’s #7 car pipping Popov to second by 0.123s.

In F4, 14-year-old local Niccolo Maccagnani was quickest in the first session on Tuesday. He posted a 1m50.65s to deny Nakamura top spot by 0.008s, with both improving on their final lap. US Racing’s Andrija Kostic trailed by 0.127s in third, with team-mate Gabriel Gomez a further 0.097s back in fourth. Four other drivers were within 0.5s of Maccagnani, with everyone else over a second slower.

Maccagnani lowered the pace to 1m49.926s in session two, edging Sebastian Wheldon by 0.028s. Prema’s drivers filled second to fifth place, with Nakamura behind Newman Chi and Salim Hanna Hernandez. Now a second covered the top 11, which featured three other Prema drivers.

Session three was slower and a 1m50.47s was enough to earn AKM Motorsport’s Tomass Stolcermanis, who raced for Prema earlier this year, first place. Maccagnani was 0.16s behind in second, and US’s Kabir Anurag was 0.736s off in third.

Nakamura bounced back in session four with the test’s fastest lap, a 1m49.454s. He ended the day with a 0.311s gap to Kostic, with Maccagnani and Hanna also within 0.4s of the new benchmark. Sasha Bondarev, Wheldon and Chi were next up, with VAR’s Dante Vinci completing a top eight split by half a second and reaching the peak of his pace on just his fifth lap.

Wednesday’s action began with familiar names at the top. Nakamura set a 1m49.568s to go fastest by 0.164s over Maccagnani, who set a personal best to move into second overall, with Hanna a further 0.026s back in third. Wheldon was the only other driver to lap sub-1m50s.

Kostic led a US 1-2-3 in session six, an early 1m50.058s putting him just 0.004s clear of Gomez who improved on his penultimate lap. Anurag was 0.128s behind, also posting his best effort on his first run, and Maccagnani was only 0.148s off the top in fourth. Prema’s top driver was Wheldon in 15th, 1.062s behind.

Prema moved back ahead in session seven, as 0.236s covered Nakamura, Bondarev, Hanna and Wheldon at the top. Nakamura set a 1m50.122s on his penultimate lap, and Maccagnani was 0.437s off that as best of the rest in fifth.

Vinci was a further 0.006s behind, then rose to second overall in the test by setting a 1m49.67s to top the final session.

That put him 0.216s off Nakamura’s benchmark, and 0.295s ahead of session eight’s long-time leader Maccagnani. Stolcermanis was 0.347s behind, and Mathilda Paatz (who did a day apiece with Prema and AS Motorsport) was 0.724s back in fourth. Lisa Billard was Prema’s top driver in eighth.

R-ace GP’s Alex Powell won Italian Formula 4’s third race at Mugello, as Prema’s Kean Nakamura Berta added to his points lead.

Powell started from pole and after breaking the tow to those behind he pulled away to win by 5.2 seconds.

Nakamura swept to the inside at the start but lost second place to PHM Racing’s Reno Francot, while Sebastian Wheldon passed US Racing’s Gabriel Gomez and then attacked Nakamura exiting turn one.

Powell had to weave down the pit straight on lap two, and had a gap of around 0.6s to Francot until lap 10 when he began to escape Francot.

Gomez moved back ahead of Wheldon as lap four began, while his Prema team-mates Salim Hanna Hernandez and Newman Chi went side-by-side for ninth place.

Between them was another Prema driver, Sacha Bondarev, who was trying to pass US’s Luka Sammalisto but went too deep and lost out to Van Amersfoort Racing’s Maximilian Popov through turns three and four.

They were attacking Wheldon by the end of lap seven, and when he ran wide exiting the final corner it allowed them to get alongside him. Sammalisto went to the outside, Popov went to the inside and both cleared him at turn one, then at the next corner Popov had the outside line and swept around Sammalisto for fifth.

Bondarev, Hanna and Chi were next to reach Wheldon, with VAR’s Alexander Ruta behind that trio after a failed move on Hanna meant he lost out to Chi.

On lap nine, Bondarev went around the outside of Wheldon at turn one but spun at turn two. Chi slipstreamed past Wheldon on lap 10, then Hanna did the same a lap later.

Ruta was alongside Wheldon as lap 12 began, and two positions were lost at turn one as Ruta went by on the outside and VAR’s Dante Vinci snuck past on the inside.

Wheldon eventually finished 14th, and after Nakamura held off a late challenge from Gomez for third it meant his gap to Wheldon at the top of the standings grew to 59 points.

Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 junior Alex Powell took his first Italian Formula 4 win in race two at Mugello.

The Jamaican won in E4 last year and in F4 Middle East at the start of 2025, but had suffered an inconsistent sophomore Italian F4 campaign prior to this weekend with four non-scores and one podium.

After returning to the podium in race one, R-ace GP driver Powell started on race two pole and instantly had a gap as four drivers fought for second downh to turn one.

Prema’s Newman Chi took the outside line there and went from fourth to second ahead of team-mate Sebastian Wheldon, while PHM Racing’s new driver Reno Francot dropped two places to fourth.

After putting two wheels into the gravel several times but somehow not going off, Prema’s Sacha Bondarev also lost ground as he ended lap one in ninth after starting sixth.

Francot overtook Wheldon into turn one on lap two then set the fastest lap as he tried to reduce the gap the top two had already built to the train of cars behind.

The safety car was needed on lap four as Cram Motorsport’s Elia Weiss moved across on R-ace’s Guy Albag and Real Racing Team’s Luca Viisoreanu, who were already side-by-side, spun around the front of Albag’s car then hit the barriers hard along with Viisoreanu.

Powell weaved his way down the pit straight when racing resumed on lap seven, as drops of rain began to fall and strong winds hit the track.

Bondarev lost further places lap after lap, while US’s Andrija Kostic got past Van Amersfoort Racing’s Dante Vinci into eighth. US’s Kabir Anurag was next to overtake Vinci on lap 11.

Chi and Francot were able to match Powell’s pace following the restart, and Wheldon had his hands full trying to hold off US’s Gabriel Gomez.

The tenseness of the action at the front was ended by the safety car, which led the last three laps after Maffi Racing’s Nathanael Berreby and R-ace’s Emily Cotty collided on the pit straight.
